When the Dunoon parents of an eight-year-old boy went to Milnerton poli-ce to report him as missing, their

world collapsed when they heard the newsthat police had for them.

They had been aware of a pedestrian acci-dent on the N7 the afternoon before, but hadhad no idea the victim was their son.

Theparents of theboyonlywent to thepolicestation the day after he had gone missing. After hearing the news, they were taken tothe hospital and positively identified the bo-dy.O’Reilly says there were quite a few peo-ple who witnessed the accident and that thedriver of the truck was driving within thespeed limit.

“Aswith all incidents of this nature, a caseof culpable homicide is being investigatedagainst the driver,” she says.A regular commuter (who wishes to re-

main anonymous) added an opinion. “Al-most everyday someone tries to run over theN7 next to Dunoon. Sometimes it happens atdawn and it’s almost miracle to avoid the

fuzzy shape crossing the road.“Something must be done, whether it’s a

raised pedestrian crossing or betterwalls se-perating the township and the road.“This is definitely not the last time a pe-

destrian will be killed on the N7 next to Du-noon. I’m surprised it doesn’t happen moreoften.”

A Brackenfell man is challenging the cur-rent legislation, which allows fathers onlythree days paid family responsibilty leavewhen their baby is born.HendriTerblanche (38), submitted apetiti-

on to the National Council on 3 July, askingthat workingmen be given 10 days paternityleave. He also approached every member ofParliament and urged them to draft a newBill to this affect.According to Terblanche, whose wife Gi-

selle gave birth to twins in November lastyear, three days’ family responsibility is notenough for parents who opt for caesareansection or in the event of othermedical com-plications.The twins were born threemonths prematurely and spent 139 and 79days respectively in hospital.“The law needs to change to allow fathers

to be involved,” he concluded.

Local government clinics in Cape Town, can’t keep up with the demand for a newbirth control device. This device will reduce a woman’s visit

to the clinic for birth control to once everythree years, as opposed to every two orthree months.Implanon, a hormone releasing implant,

was introduced nationwide by national he-althministerDrAaronMotsoaledi inAprilthis year and met with an overwhelmingresponse in the Western Cape, says Jo-An-ne Otto, spokesperson for the provincialdepartment of health. The implant is a flexible plastic rod,

about the size of a matchstick, which is in-serted into the upper arm. Through theslow release of progesterone, it preventswomen from falling pregnant.Although new to SouthAfrica, Implanon

has been used in many European countriesfor a number of years and is the preferredform of birth control for many women, ac-cording to theWestern Cape Health Depart-ment. “In the Cape Winelands area, over2000 women have elected to have the Impla-non inserted. In explaining the lapse in time since the

roll-out in April to the official announce-ment last week, Otto says: “This incredibleresponse exceeded availability of the deviceand it was decided to wait until logistical is-sues were resolved before advertising theavailability again.”The implant is virtually painless, the due

to local anaesthetic which is administeredbefore the implant is inserted. The wholeprocess, including counselling and paper-work, takes about 30 minutes to complete.

The implant is safe for use by women of allages and can even be inserted straight afterdelivery, thereby allowing themother to de-cide when she is ready to have another ba-by.The Implanon offers protection for up to

three years and can be easily removedshould the woman decide to have a baby be-fore that. Normal fertility returns within afew weeks of removal of the device,” Ottoexplains. In order to accomodate the rollout, a clini-

cal nurse was trained in every City clinicand maternity unit, “so no woman needs tofind herself in the difficult position of anun-planned pregnancy,” saidWesternCapeMi-nister of Health Theuns Botha last week.According to information on the official

Implanon website, it does not contain estro-

gen. It prevents pregnancy in several ways, most importantly by stopping the release ofan egg from the ovaries. It also changes theconsistencyof themucous in the cervix, the-reby preventing the sperm from reachingthe egg.According to the website, clinical studies

indicated that a woman’s chances of gettingpregnant is less than one for every 100 wo-men who use Implanon for one year. The most common side effects includes

changes in menstrual bleeding, moodswings, weight gain, abdominal cramps anda low sex drive.“Please bear in mind that birth control is

still a form of medication and that it maycause side effects in one woman and not inanother,” she advised. Some women haveopted to have the device removed becauseof these side-effects. “It is a simple procedu-re to have the device removed where afternormal hormonal activity will resume,”says Otto.“Each woman’s personal health will need

to be evaluated before birth control optionsare considered. In the northern suburbs, clinics can’t

keep up with the demand. At the May sub-council meeting of the Brackenfell andKraaifontein communities, a City healthpractitioner confirmed that teenage preg-nancies have already declined in certainareas, with the only probable cause beingthe successful adminstering of Implanon.Otto cautioned that women who engage inrisky sexual practice should still use con-doms to protect themselves from sexuallytransmitted infectionsand diseases.V For more information and answers to any questions, please visit the following sites: http://www.westerncape.gov.za/assets/departments/health/2014faqimplanon.pdf.

T he number of drug arrests in CapeTown is continuing to escalate aftermembers of Crime Intelligence and the

Hawks found mandrax worth R2.8 million ina West Beach flat.

This latest incident saw three people beingarrested, including two sisters.

Milnerton sector police spokesperson,Warrant-officer Daphne O’Reilly has admit-ted that drugs are a big problem in TableView and Milnerton. Table View police com-mander, Col Dirk Vosloo, agrees.

“My deduction is made according to thefact that most suspects arrested were in pos-session of small quantities, which suggeststhat they may be users,” he says.

The demand for mandrax, a drug usedmainly by lower income groups, has led tosuspected drug dealers occupying flats inthe affluent West Beach suburb. Some gooddetective work by the Crime Intelligence Di-vision and the Hawks led to the West Beacharrest last week Wednesday.

Provincial police spokesperson, Lt Col An-drè Traut, elaborates:

“A crime intelligence- driven operationresulted in the arrest of three suspects forbeing in possession of 70 000 mandrax ta-blets as well as a substantial amount of cash

to the tune of R700 000 – possibly generatedby means of their drug trade. The mandraxtablets are estimated to have a street valueof R2.8 million.”

The majority of the drugs were found hid-den in the ceiling of the flat in Radar Road.

The two sisters, aged 50 and 31, are due tomake a court appearance in Cape Town oncethey have been charged.

Last month the City revealed that aftermaking 1000 drug-related arrests, around28 000 units of mandrax, tik and marijuanahave been confiscated since January.

JP Smith, the mayoral committee memberfor safety and security says: “That is an im-pressive improvement over the 380 a year weused to get. We’re about six or seven timesmore efficient on my watch. While we ag-gressively tackle supply on the one side,we’re doing about five times more arreststhan any other city in South Africa.”

Brace also sent out a warning to the publicthat a “flesh-eating drug”, originally fromRussia and slowly spreading through theworld, might already have hit the our sho-res. This cheap heroin substitute is com-monly referred to as “krokodil” and causessores, tissue damage and a rough, scale-likeappearance on the skin.

According to reports the acidity of the che-micals causes the body’s fat and skin to“burn off and die”.

Sisters caught inmassive drug haul

Mandrax with a street value of R2.8 million was seized in West Beach last week.

W e’ve all seen the hundreds of adsadvertising illegal abortions.Yet there seems to be an endless

stream of women opting for ‘backstreet’abortions, despite legal state abortions be-ing available for free.A woman from Bloekombos in Kraaifon-

tein lastWednesday endedup inTygerbergHospital after she bought pricey – andhighly dangerous – abortion pills on theblack market.Captain Fienie Nimb, spokeswoman of

the Bellville police, confirmed that the 28-year-old woman visited Kraaifontein DayHospital after swallowing the pills andstarted going into labour without any con-tractions.The womanwas transported as an emer-

gency case via ambulance to TygerbergHospital, Nimb said. The legal time frame within which an

abortion can be done is 12 weeks, and thenonly through a registered practioner, cli-nic or health practitioner.Apparently, the woman was too emba-

rassed to seek legal medical help when shefinally decided to terminate the pregnancyat this late stage. The staff at the hospital managed to save

the baby. But they are also still conside-ring that charges be brought against her.The woman bought the abortion pills

from a foreign national – valued at onlyabout R2 each – for about R550 for two pills.“We find women are still very ignorant,

naive and vulnerable – easy targets for tho-se selling these abortion pills onGoogle, orthose who advertise in pamphlets, intrains or on lampposts,” she said.“They sell these pills and get away with

it, because they are difficult to trace, usingcellphone numbers that have been RICAdby legitimate South African citizens, who

pay to have their identity used.”She urged the public not to buy the pills

which will ultimately cripple themarket forthe illegal medications, rather using legiti-mate and registered practitioners. The provincial health department said

they have gone to great lengths to ensurethat the public is educated and informedabout legal abortions.

Public informed“The provincial communications depart-

ment sent out a message informing the pu-blic about the free and safe termination ofpregnancy (TOP) services that are providedin the designated facilities in the WesternCape,” said Laticia Pienaar, principal com-munications officer at Tygerberg Hospital. The departmental women’s health sub-di-

rectorate even developed an educational wo-men’s health toolwhich is used used by com-munity care workers while they conducttheir home visits, she said.“The topic of safe and free TOP services

is addressed during the visits.“There are also TOP posters educating the

public onmedical TOPs were distributed re-cently to all health care facilities,” Pienaarsaid. “One can report to any facility and ifnecessary, will be referred to a TOP designa-ted site.“A woman who is less than nine weeks

pregnant qualifies for a medical TOP- adrug-induced abortion,” she said. The number for legal and successful abor-

tions at government facilities was at 12 709in theWesternCape for 2010/2011, accordingto a statement.“If members of the public come across a

poster advertising abortion, they must re-port it to their nearest police station. Allbackstreet abortions are illagal and must bereported. All sexually active women of 12 years and

older may use free family planning servicesat all government clinics.

When you hear the word “mixology”,an image of Getafix the Druid, met-hodically adding ingredients to his

cauldron, irresistably pops into on’s head. The beloved Asterix character famous for

hismagic potion that gives people extraordi-nary strength has a great deal in commonwith Brent Perremore. Like Getafix, Brentis famous for fixing a drink that that givespeople a spring in their step.He recently wowed the judges at the natio-

nal finals of a mixology contest, next havingthe chance to represent SouthAfrica in Scot-land. The Diageo Reserve bartender compe-tition iswidely regarded as the biggestmixo-logist competition in the world.Brent’s mother and Phoenix resident,Esther Perremore says “An ordinary bar-

man job has become an art form. Childrenshould learn that even if they are a streetsweeper then they should be the best street

sweeper they can be!”Brent currently works at the Orphanage

Cocktail Emporium in the City Bowl andthis will be the second time he representshis country, the first being in Rio de Janei-ro in 2012.“I like trying new cocktails all the time,”

says Brent.“Sometimes the ideas come to me in the

strangest of times. In 2012 I dreamed abouta cocktail that won the national finals! Itwas a really strange concoction with gin,dry vermouth, a red onion and thyme colis, and a bacon cream foam on top and servedwith crispy bacon,” he continues. The drink that will now see him mixing

withmen in kilts is called theGift of Persia(a cocktail smoked in a decanter, served ina chilled glass, and consisting of Ron Zaca-pa, dry Vermouth, date syrup, naartjie andcardamom). What sets Brent apart from his peers is

his food technology experience, since infu-sing food or fruit into cocktails is just asimportant as the drink itself.A crackerjack mixologist, indeed!“People can call me a mixologist, but I

prefer the term craft bartender, because itis an age-old craft that is gaining populari-ty once more.”A crackerjack craft bartender, indeed!Even though Brent likes experimenting

with new flavours, his “old favourite” is aNegroni. He demonstrates his knowledge of the

classics... “It is an old Italian cocktail in-vented in the early twentieth century inFlorence. It’s basically sweet red ver-mouth, Campari and gin served on therocks with a twist of orange. It’s beneficialto have a good background on the classics.”His least favourite is the “nothing-more-

than-a-slush-puppy” strawberry daiquiri. When asked what advice he has for yo-

ungsters who dream of becoming craft bar-tenders, he says: “Iwork four 15 hour shifts

a week, so it is not an easy job! There are alot of rewards though. It is a viable career option. People look at

bartending as just an interim job, but no-onereally though it could be an actual career.A wonderful career!”

Cocktail maestro mixes it up

Craft bartender and cocktail genius BrentPerremore will be representing South Africa inScotland this year.

MyCiTi has once again been in-ternationally recognised for itsoutstanding service. This time around, the City of

Cape Town’s efforts to enhanceuniversal accessibility has beenapplauded.Thismeans that privision has

been made for disabled, partial-ly able and able people to enjoyequal and easy access to the ve-hicles.Earlier this year, MyCiTi’s

Universal Accessibility Policyreceived an award in Vienna atthe office of the United Nationsfor being one of the most inno-vative policies in terms of ensu-ring that all special needs pas-sengers canmake use of the ser-vice.The decision to use low-floor

buses for all future roll-outs ofthe MyCiTi service reflects theCity’s commitment to evolvingits services as it is much easier

for the disabled to board.Importantly, the specificati-

ons comply with SABS stan-dards, in accordance with uni-versal access requirements. In each bus, six seats were re-

moved to create enough spacefor one wheelchair to be acco-modated.The buses have also been

equipped with reflective strip-ping, which helps passengerswho are partially sighted to spotthe vehicles.TheCity’s commitment is fur-

ther outlined in the UniversalAccessPolicy, whichwas imple-mented on 24 April. This policy outlines an inclu-

sive approach to providing ac-cessibility and ensuring that allnew transport infrastructureand transport services will ade-quately incorporate the princi-ples of universal accessibilityfor the disabled.

The new N7-Melkbosstrand in-terchange has been opened formotorist use last month.Randall Cable, South African

National Road Agency (Sanral)engineering manager for roadnetwork operations, says: “Im-proving safety for our roadusers was the key driving forceto get the intersection and N7upgraded.”The newly completed inter-

change forms part of the Phase1 of the N7 Upgrade, and inclu-des the construction of the se-cond carriageway to the Phila-delphia intersection, as well asa second interchange at the N7-Philadelphia (Atlantis South)intersection. Despite more than100 rains days affecting Phase 1construction, the project as a

whole is scheduled tobe comple-ted on time by the end of this ye-ar.“This project is a massive in-

vestment in our economy. Notonly did the construction phaseprovides intensive job creationfor the locals, this upgraded cor-ridor now provides and enhan-ces economic development tothe northern parts of the Wes-tern Cape and beyond,” conti-nues Cable. As part of SAN-RAL’s strategic developmentplan for the country’s primaryroad network, Phase 1 is thefirst of three phases which en-tails the upgrading of the N7 tofreeway standard (the highestclass of road) from the N7-Melk-bosstrand Intersection all theway to Malmesbury..

Weens my omstandighede moesek en my gesin baie rondtrek.

Neemjou posisie in as ouer.

As my onderneming grootgenoeg was, het ek haar “ge-steel” en Kaap toe gebring.

SMSV It was shocking to see you turn the tragic death of an innocent child into a pleafor a library (TB, 25 June). The lack of alibrary did not kill that child, the great Capetonian pastime of jaywalking did.Rather call for better education on how tocross roads. V My work involves driving, so I listen tothe radio often. There are many topics onraising money for the poor, but not aboutcontraception. V It’s a disgrace how the system fails vulnerable kids by turning them into vulnerable adults (Xoliswa Hendricks, TB, 2June). These children are also orphanedand abandoned by a system which is supposed to protect and uplift them, butwhich sets them up for failure. Yet hundreds of experienced social workersstruggle to find employment. It’s strange,as the need for their services is so monumental. How embarrassing! Anonymous

Pop singer, Daniel Baron, is giving fansa taste of his new album, with his newsingle, “Heartbreak City”.

The chart-topping songwriter won heartsacross the country with his debut album,It’ s Time, which clinched eight radio hits. Now he’s busy with his next, as yet unna-

med, album.Daniel says he’s always loved performing

and even while he was still at school, youcould find him performing at the nearestpub or club after hours.

Being one of the top 10 contestants in the2009 Idols competition gave him lots of expo-sure and made him even more certain thatperforming was what he wanted to do withhis life.

“Then the realworkbegan,” he says.Dani-el points out that many people think you en-ter Idols, “and then the work is done”, butthis isn’t the case, especially since he wentstraight into the studio to work on It’s Time.

Daniel describes his music as pop/rock, agenre which gives him plenty of room to ex-perimentwithdifferent sounds. “I love colla-borating with new genres and new artists,”he says. “It’s sucha strongmediumtobeableto take two completely different genres orminds and create something spectacular.”

His collaboration with ProVerb, resultedin the single “Not Here”, which shot to num-ber one on the Kia Take40SA chart last year.He also recently did a song with dance act,Pascal & Pearce.

TongueincheekDaniel believes thatwhatmakeshismusic

so successful is that his songs are honest andthat people can relate to them.

While his music has been recieved well inthe United Kingdom, he’s decided that it’smore important for him to build his careerin his home country before he explores hisoverseas options. “I think there’s no betterfoundation that your home country,” hesays.

“Heartbreak City” is a tongue-in-cheeklook at heartbreak.

“I’m saying we’ve all been through heart-break, so lets just look back and laugh at it,”Daniel explains, adding that the song showshis lighter side.

Fans can expectDaniel’s newalbumsome-time in October and he won’t disappointthem as they can expect the same feel as hisprevious album.

When he isn’t working on his own music,Daniel alsowrites for other artists. His song,“Insomnia,”was a hit for international pop/dance artist, Cara, and back home his song“Liefde Soldaat” is being performed by theAfrikaans boy band, Adam.

Magnificent form displayed by Fran-cis Carthers and Bellville driverGunter Drotschie in the Sports and

GT and the Fine Car categories, was thehighlight of Saturday’s fifth round of theWingfield Motors Power Series at Killarney.

Carruthers performed beautifully, as hisJuno SS3 swiftly dealt with a Porsche thathad been strengthened by top Gautenger An-drew Culbert and Durban’s Sun Moodley, who is also the Big Foot Express category’ssponsor. Blaauwberg’s Craig Jarvis andMoodley finished second and third in thefirst race, with Jarvis (again), and Culbertfilling the second positions.

Despite not setting the quickest qualifyingtime, Drotshie was also in a destructivemood in the Charl Electrical Eng. Fine Carevents. His bulky Chev Commodore GS fi-nished well ahead of Eric van der Merwe(Porsche 944 turbo) and Jaco Lambert (VWFox) in the first race, with a Porsche powe-red Lourens Bester and Van der Merwe fil-ling these positions in the second.

The Mutlu Battery Classic Car categoryprovided a platform for another double vic-tory, this time for veteran Richard Quixley. But the Datsun 240Z driver was overshado-wed by Trevor Momberg’s V6 Ford Capri inboth races, with Vance Kearney (Ford CapriPerana) taking third in the first race.

The second Classic shootout was red flag-ged when Johan Swart’s VW Scirocco cras-

hed into the barrier wall at the exit of theEngen corner. Luckily, with the results jud-ged from their positions on the final comple-ted lap, Swart was awarded third place.Overall class victories went to Dave Alha-deff (B: Alfa), Herman de Kock (C: Ford Es-cort), and Jan-Willem de la Port (D: Chev Ca-nAm).

The quality of Masters V8 events easilycompensated for their lack of quantity asCraig Jarvis and Franco Donadio fought itout in the last two events. After sharing firstand second places, they were followed acrossthe line by Richard Schreuder in the firstand Paolo Cavalieri in the second.

The Makita Supercar events were possi-bly even closer, as Steve McCarthy was nomore than a hair’s breadth ahead of Nick Ad-

cock when the flag came out at the endof their first race. They switched positions

in the final, with Adcock having just enoughof an advantage to clinch the overall verdict.

The third places were claimed by Brad Wa-deley and Gareth Easom, who was also ad-judged the overall winner of the Silver class, despite starting from the back of the grid af-ter missing the qualifying sessions. TheBronze class went to Carl Nel.

Sean le Riche’s 1.7 litre Formula Renaultwas unchallenged in the single seater For-mula Libre events. He was followed by theB and C class winners, Rassie Erasmus (For-mula Ford Ray) and Stephen Schemel (For-mula Vee Rhema), in both races.

The sixth round of the Power Series is dueto be held at Killarney on August 9.

WINGFIELD MOTOR POWER SERIES: ACTION AT KILLARNEY

Burning the tracks

Gareth Easom from Edgemead took a well deserved 3rd place in Supercars after starting at the back of the grid.

For the second year in succession Wes-tern Province beat the Blue Bulls 24-11 inthe u-16 Coca-Cola Grant Khomo ‘unoffi-cial’ final rugby match that took place atthe Tshwane University of Technology to-day (Thursday).

“We are all very excited with the win,but I have to say it has been a stressfultwo days,” said manager, Frikkie Coet-zer. “Our game against the Golden Lionswas perhaps the hardest game of the tour-nament as they are physically strong andcame at us with no respite. But we mana-ged to beat them. Today’s game was per-haps not as physically challenging, butthe Blue Bulls play a good tactical game.We had to change our game plan to intro-duce a combination of both strength andtactics, which worked in our favour in theend.”

This win means that Western Province

has completed a Coca-Cola Youth RugbyWeek treble following the Western Pro-vince u-13’s successfully defended theiru-13 Coca-Cola Craven Week title lastweek and the u-18 Coca-Cola AcademyWeek that finishes in Worcester thisweek.

WP was first to score as flyhalf DamianWillemse scored a try in the 17th minute.Gianni Lombard converted to bring thelead to 7-0.

WP wing Benjamin Momberg scoredanother try for Western Province two mi-nutes later that Gianni Lombard conver-ted and the score moved to 14-0.

The Blue Bulls got on the score sheetthrough a penalty from Ruan de Swardtand at the break WP led 14-3.

It looked like the Blue Bulls were co-ming back into the game when WesternProvince conceded a penalty that Ruan

De Swardt slotted to bring Western Pro-vince’s lead down to 8 points.

However Western Province was tighton defense and countered well off the BlueBulls kicks. Gianni Lombard and theWestern Province backline were slickand fluid in their play. Province constant-ly kept the ball in their possession ma-king it difficult for the Bulls to attack.

Western Province 8th man delivered atry for his team in the 37th minute to ex-tend his teams lead to 15 points followedby Gianni Lombard’s conversion.

Western Province continued to presson relentlessly and were awarded with atry as Jade Fortune dotted down. Thematch heated up as the Bulls’ Gerald Lo-we was sin binned, and Damian Willemsefor WP followed him. The Bulls were fi-nally awarded a try as Luke Fortuin sco-red with one minute left on the clock.
