Trunk CablesCOMM/SCOPE

DescriptionThe application of coaxial cables to underground installationsshould be undertaken with caution because of the many haz-ards existing that can damage the cable both during and afterplacement. These hazards are also a major consideration inselecting the cable for underground use. Any vehicle that canprevent damage to the aluminum shield and center conductorshould be a requirement, not an option.

Some forms of damage could be cuts in the jacket caused bysharp rocks or debris, dents caused by rocks or rough handlingduring installation, and/or corrosion caused by moisture andcorrosive elements in the ground.

There are several styles of coaxial cables available fromwhich to select the best design for each application. The fol-lowing is a description of cable design from most protectionto least protection.

1990 National Electrical Code Requirements for Fire Saftey of CATV Cables

The National Electrical Code (NEC) detailing the communityantenna television and radio distribution systems is covered inArticle 820, Sections 820-1 through 820-53. These codes aresafety guidelines established by the National Fire ProtectionAssociation (NFPA). Coaxial cables installed as wiring withinbuildings shall be listed as being resistant to the spread of firein accordance with the NEC. The tables must be marked inaccordance with Table 820-50.

Although NEC covers wire and cable installed in factories, office buildings, hotels, motels, apartment buildings, resi-dences, and all cables which pass through any floor, wall, ceil-ing, or which travel in ducts, plenums, and other air handlingspaces, each individual municipality, city, county, or state candecide whether they wish to adopt the 1990 NEC as law. Therequirements established by the NEC may be adopted by thestate or local building code agencies where jurisdiction of localelectrical, building and fire inspector requirements are estab-lished and enforced. Local authorities having jurisdictionenforce their own codes. They have the right to accept orrefuse any installation in accordance with their local laws. Oneof the organizations local inspectors rely on to test wire andcable is Underwriter's Laboratories (U.L.) All applicable build-ing codes should be reviewed and electrical, building and fireinspection organizations consulted prior to the selection, instal-lation and operation of any cable products.

Article 820-4 details identification marking of cables for use inany given area. Although subject to local interpretation, themarking (printing) stipulation most likely will be a prerequisitefor installations. The 1990 NEC classifications for coaxial dropcables are as follows:

1. CATVP [Article 820-51(a), 820-53(a)] - Designed for usein ducts, plenums, and other spaces used for environ-mental air. This type of cable is commonly referred to asplenum cable and can be used in place of any of the fol-lowing three levels.

2. CATVR [Article 820-51(b), 820-53(b)] - Designed for instal-lation in vertical runs and penetrating more than one floor,or cables installed in vertical runs in a shaft. Riser cablecan be substituted for the remaining lower level flametests. CATVP cables can be substituted for CATVR appli-cations to maintain electrical integrity of the cable.

3. CATV [Article 820-51(c), 820-53(c)] - Designed for installa-tion in building locations other than the locations coveredin 1 and 2 above. These cables pass the UL1581 flametest, similar to IEEE 383, 70000 BTU tray flame test.

Cable & ConnectorsAbout Drop Cable

Drop Cable

About Non-Plenum Cable Certain sections of the 1987 update of the National ElectricCode make distinctions between cable for general building useand cable for restricted use. For instance, Article 725 forremote control, signaling and power limited circuits states thatgeneral building cable may run without conduit in certain con-cealed spaces (such as walls) while restricted use cable mustrun in conduit unless it is run a distance of less than 10 feet.

For most interbuilding applications, system planners shouldnote that savings can be realized by specifying CL2 cables, asthey do not require conduit. Most non-plenum Comm/Scopecables are manufactured with special jacketing and dielectricmaterials that allow them to meet the CL2 standards. UsingCL2X cables when CL2 cables are mandated may pose anunwarranted safety threat.

About Plenum CablePlenums are the enclosed air spaces in office buildings whichare used for supply or return ventilation and can house the elec-trical and communications wiring for the building. Because theair space is unobstructed, plenums represent an area where firecan spread quickly if combustible materials are present.

Prior to 1975, the National Fire Protection Agency required thatall cables running through a plenum had to be encased in con-duit. This regulation was an effort to prevent cable from addingto the heat, flames and smoke in the event of a fire.

The development of plenum cable revolutionized the way com-munication cables are installed. Plenum cable is made of fluo-ropolymers that propagate flame at a very slow rate and havelow smoke generating properties. For these reasons, plenumcables are approved by the National Fire Protection Agency tobe installed without conduit.

Although plenum cables have a higher initial cost than a similarnon-plenum cable, they cost less to install because they do notrequire conduit. They are especially resistant to cracking, abra-sion, chemicals and extreme temperatures (-40°F to +400°F).

About Multiconductor and Twisted Pair CablesMulticonductor cable is made up of two or more insulated con-ductors grouped together to make electronic wiring more prac-tical. Applications include communications, instrumentation, sound, control, audio and data transmission.

Twisted pair cable consists of wire pairs (two insulated wirestwisted around each other) grouped in a cable. The pairs ofconductors are twisted to reduce crosstalk and to decreasecapacitance unbalance. This usually allows higher dataspeeds than multiconductor cables.

Twisted pair is inexpensive and relatively easy to install. It isgaining rapid acceptance as a transmission medium for a vari-ety of networks, although these systems are presently smallerand slower than networks connected by coaxial cable.

Plenum Cables

Basic Construction Plenums are the enclosed air spaces in office buildings whichare used for supply or return ventilation and can house the elec-trical and communications wiring for the building. Because theair space is unobstructed, plenums represent an area where firecan be spread quickly if combustible materials are present.

Plenum Cable is made of fluoropolymers that propagate flameat a very slow rate and have low smoke generating properties. For these reasons, plenum cables are approved by the NationalFire Protection Agency to be installed without conduit.

Although plenum cables have a higher initial cost than a similarnon-plenum cable, they cost less to install because they do notrequire conduit. They are especially resistant to cracking, abra-sion, chemicals and extreme temperatures. (-40°F to +400°F).

Cable & ConnectorsConnectors

Aluminum Connector Types

Feed-Thru (‘VSF’)A device that seizes only the outer conductor of the coaxialcable. The cable center conductor extends through the con-nector and is retained within the equipment housing.

Pin Type (‘Stinger’)A connector that seizes both the outer and center conductor. This device has an additional feature not found in the feed-thrutype consisting of a solid brass pin which seizes and retains thecable center conductor. The pin then extends through the bodyand is retained within the equipment housing.

Splice This connector is used to join together two cables. The featuresof seizing both the outer and center conductors (as in the pin-type) are found in this device.

“F” FemaleThis connector is used when an “F” female port is required atthe end of the cable. It has identical features as the pin-typeand splice in that it seizes both the center and outer conductorof the coaxial cable.

“F” MaleThis connector is used when it is necessary to have an “F”male connection at the end of the cable. It has the same fea-tures as the pin-type, splice and “F” female in that both centerand outer conductors of the cable are seized.

ExtensionThis connector is used when sufficient cable is not available forinstallation. It has a pin which seizes and retains the cable cen-ter conductor. The pin then extends through the body and isretained with the equipment housing.

Cable TerminatorThis connector is used in a cable system where it becomesnecessary to terminate both RF signal and 60 Hz AC power. Itcontains the center and outer conductor seizing features as inthe pin-type, splice, "F" female and "F" male connectors.

DescriptionThe K series is a patented 2-piece design which requires thetightening of only one nut to seize both the center conductorand aluminum sheath of the cable. This design requires lesstime to install than a 3-piece connector, making installation eas-ier and faster.

The W series is the original 3-piece connector design whichhas been manufactured for over 20 years. The three-piececonnector design seizes the center conductor and aluminumsheath of the cable, independent of each other. This is done bytightening two nuts, allowing for full view of the center conduc-tor entrance into the seizing mechanism. The 30 dB minimumreturn loss has been extended to 1 GHz on pin and splice con-nectors to accommodate future channel expansion.

Cable & ConnectorsConnectors

Coaxial ConnectorsCABLE-CON

DescriptionThese products have been designed for coaxial cables with acharacteristic impedance of 75 ohms. Connectors are availablefor most types of commonly used cables.

All connectors are designed and constructed of the finest mate-rials to exacting specifications to insure a mechanically andelectrically superior interface. Bodies and nuts are made from6262-T6 aluminum treated with a chromic acid conversion coatto prevent corrosion. All pins are made of brass and plated with

Hardline Gold Series FeaturesInstallation Friendly

• Designed with field installation in mind. Easy assemblyhelps to eliminate installation errors.

• One wrench size per connector• Trim guides in connector body to insure exact center

conductor length.• Metal to metal positive stop eliminates over tightening

of connector.• Slim body design allows for easier installation in confined

spaces such as pedestals. Smaller wrenches required foreasier and lighter handling.

• Better heat shrink application over connectors and connection into ports.

• Uses standard coring and stripping tools. No need forspecial tools.

Three Piece Design• Allows for independent confirmation of a secure installa-

tion from the seizing of the cable’s center conductor to thegripping of the cable itself.

• Visible confirmation of the center conductor entry into theconnector body.

• True Non-rotational design built into body to keep cablefrom turning.

bright acid tin. Radiation sleeves are either stainless steel or tinplated brass.

Connectors are sealed with o-rings made of ethylene propy-lene to prevent moisture ingress. Ethylene propylene insureslong o-ring life even in high ozone atmospheres.

Cabel con’s connectors meet stringent quality standards andare tested over a wide range of environmental conditions.

Quality Materials• High quality corrosion resistant aluminum alloy parts

(6262 or equivalent).• High quality 360 brass parts.• E/P - Ethylene/Propylene o-rings for superior sealing.

O-zone, ultraviolet and salt spray resistant. Tested andguaranteed in all environments.

• Lubricant on all threads for smooth anti-locking operation.• Pressed plastic insulator seals unit from condensation and

moisture migration.

Top Performance• Meets or exceeds industry standards for RFI leakage

and return loss.• All connectors are swept from .3 MHz to 1 GHz.• Environmental testing includes pressure and salt spray tests.

Cost Effectiveness• Slim design means less material which keeps product costs low.• Slim design means a smaller heat shrink which saves

dollars on associated material construction costs.• 2" Pin standard at no extra charge.

DescriptionMarketplace needs are pushing the communications industrytowards the convergence of video, voice and data. Broadbandnetwork providers are engineering their systems for expandedbandwidth, two-way interactivity and digital and/or compresseddigital signals. ANTEC’s new Digicon "F" Connector is thesmart connector for subscriber interfaces in your advancedbroadband networks.

Features• High performance, sealed drop connector• Superior mechanical and electrical specifications• Conical swedge provides an efficient, environmental seal• One connector for Type 6 and one connector for Type 59• Unique installation tool for both connector types

Digicon Connectors have many advantages over thestandard F-fittings

• Digicon connectors were specifically designed to be usedwith the patented RTC 360 Radial Tamper Crimp tool.

• The connectors were designed with Internal SealingRings. When conicaly swedged, these rings from an O-Ring out of the cables outer jacket.

• The internal rings reduce radiation leakage, provide anexcellent seal for waterproofing, and improve the pull-outstrength of theconnector.

• F-Conn connectors are manufactured with a lenghthenedinternal ferrule to support the outer radial swedge andprovide a strong electrical connection.

• The inner wall of the connector is tapered. This taper aidsin the swedging process by ensuring that the connectorwill not collapse under the axial pressure of the swedge.

• Digicon Connectors have a rubber ring in the hex nut forprotection against water intrusion.

• The Digicon Connector system significantly reduces radiation leakage when compared to standard hex crimps
