PROGRAM UPDATES

York BHRS

The 2015-16 academic school year has kicked off and is in full swing! Forging ahead with anticipation to all the learning experiences, excitement and challenges that a new school year brings. Let us all set the bar high to serve our clients and community, and assure they will receive the absolute best BHRS treatment and care!

Word from Coordinator: As my last contribution for the T.W. Post, it is simple to make my final words a farewell tribute to the fantastic team I was honored to lead, the super, supportive colleagues I worked alongside, and the Administration that helped foster my growth and mentored me. You each personify hardworking, talented, creative, caring individuals -- exemplifying excellence and bringing the best out in others on a daily basis. I didn’t view my role as leading a work force but felt it rather a privileged opportunity and commitment to making our community better – a responsibility we all share proudly. Every day I came to work has been an absolute pleasure because of having the chance to interact with kind-hearted professionals. What an extraordinary time I had with the Ponessa family – a team like no other that provided me many fantastic memories to cherish. A heartfelt THANK YOU to each of you! Please make sure to provide a warm welcome to our new Director, Christy Harnish, who is very familiar with the workings of BHRS and who will undoubtedly provide strong leadership and support to everyone as the program transitions. Wishing you all the best for the future as you continue to spread success and smiles and make a difference for the better. . Blessings, Jennifer--

Internship Program Update

Currently, there are fewer active interns at this time than in many previous years. Several have completed the program and two more left unexpectedly due to personal concerns. In the meantime, ongoing interns have continued doing exceptional work overall. Interns, like employees, have some mind-boggling cases with unusual living situations, abuse histories, and challenging mental health disorders. This leads to lively individual and group supervision. Recently, I have focused on the object relations idea of the “container.” This term describes our psychological capacity to manage our own lives in addition to challenging psychological material from clients. The goal in the internship program is to enlarge the “container” so we can better “hold” our clients with their pathology. The difficult balance is to increase the “container” size while remaining alert and sensitive to client needs. One should not confuse enlarging the “container” with indifference and psychological numbness. We have several outstanding interns starting in late August and early September. Conor Sukhdeo, Penn State, will work in the School-based program. Hilary Wright, Immaculata Psy.D. program, will work in school-based and complete BHRS evaluations in York. Ryan Staudle, Immaculata Psy.D. program, will be in the York EB outpatient program. I included their photos below: Conor Sukhdeo Hilary Wright Ryan Staudle Clinical Comment: Transitions The golf metaphors have ended. They were entertaining and useful but it is time to head for the 19th hole. Next month, I will start another series, identifying profound concepts from early well-known thinkers. I plan to review information from Freud, Jung, Sullivan, Adler, Winnicott, Klein, and many others. I will likely include some insight into their lives to spice things up. Here is a sample: Did you know that Freud spent many summers in Italy with his wife’s sister? Analyze that. Gene Nelson, Psy.D. Psychologist/Internship Director

We could not have accomplished what we did, without your help! Here are a few pictures of our volunteers from various events:

TWP WELLNESS COLUMN

EAT YOUR WAY TO GREATER HAPPINESS Yes, it is true! I'm thrilled to inform you that it appears you really can eat your way to

more happiness. In the first major study to elucidate the relationship between what

we eat and our psychological well-being, the verdict was clear, compelling and totally

uplifting. The more fruits and veggies we eat, the happier we are. For this study the

researchers followed the diets and psychological state of over 12,000 adults for up to

seven years. The influence fruits and veggies had on positive well-being was so strong

that measureable benefits were noted for even a single additional daily serving. What's more, the impact was

almost immediate and continued to increase for up to eight servings per day. To put this remarkably positive

impact into perspective, the lead researcher noted that going from almost no fruits and veggies to eight

servings a day would boost life satisfaction on par with going from unemployment to employment. That is

amazing!

Bottom line: Eating more fruits and veggies is one of the surest and fastest ways to be happier. Go eat some

right now!

NEW SCIENCE UNCOVERS HOW ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

LEAD TO WEIGHT GAIN If you are using artificial sweeteners to control your weight, take heed. While past studies in both

animals and humans have suggested they can lead to weight gain, scientists have identified for the very

first time just how this can happen. In a series of sophisticated lab experiments, scientists found that lab

animals regularly fed a diet containing the popular artificial sweetener sucralose (Splenda) ate 30 percent

more (yikes!) relative to when they consumed a naturally sweetened diet. The researchers directly

related the boost in appetite and eating behavior observed in the lab mice fed the artificially sweetened

chow to changes in an area of the brain's reward center. This specialized area of the brain is responsible

for integrating sweet taste and energy (calorie) density.

From the beginning of time if we consumed a natural food, the sweeter the food the more calories it

contained, and this important connection was duly registered in the area of the brain mentioned above.

But with zero calorie sugar substitutes, there is no relationship between sweet taste and calories, and

this is where things get dicey. According to the researchers, what results is a recalibration in this special

part of the brain that ultimately signals to the body that more calories are needed, thus boosting

appetite and eating. As an additional consequence of this recalibration, sweetened foods taste even

better, further promoting a sweet tooth and driving up excess calorie intake. Ironically, the neuronal

pathway involved in this study's findings is an ancient remnant from our early history that makes

nutritious foods taste better when we are starving.

In addition to stimulating appetite, the researchers also noted that sucralose triggered hyperactivity,

increased insomnia, and diminished sleep quality-all features common in a semi-starved state. I have

never recommended the routine use of sugar substitutes for a host of reasons, and this new report

certainly adds to my list of concerns. (2)

SUPERFOOD - WATERMELON

No matter how you slice it, this thirst-quenching, low calorie treat is a reservoir of

wholesome goodness. Watermelon is dripping in vitamins A and C that come along with a mother load of the awesome antioxidant lycopene. This terrific trio of

nutrients qualifies this summer fruit as a champion food for both cancer protection and cardiovascular protection. So go watermelon!

Avocado and Watermelon Salad with Jalapeno Lime Dressing

Ingredients:

2 organic romaine hearts, chopped

2 avocados, cut into segments*

2 cups 1/2 inch diced watermelon

2 tbsp finely chopped purple onion

1 jalapeno, seeds and ribs removed, then flesh minced

3 tbsp finely chopped fresh cilantro

Juice of 2 limes

1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil

1/2 tbsp of jam, honey, or something sweet

Instructions:

In a small bowl combine jalapeno, cilantro, lime juice, olive oil, and jam. Whisk until well combined, and taste for seasoning. If the

dressing seems too acidic add more olive oil. If it seems too oily, add a splash of rice wine vinegar or more lime juice. In a large bowl

combine the avocado, watermelon, onion, and lettuce. Toss with dressing right before serving.

*To cut avocados: Cut them in half from end to end and remove seed (stab it with a knife and twist, the seed should come right

out). Cut the halves end to end again to make quarters. Make 3 lengthwise slices in each quarter not cutting through skin and then

peel back skin to make your avocado slices.

HOW TO MAKE YOUR DIET CHANGES STICK

If you want the healthy diet changes you make to really stick, I have some great news. According to nifty, new

research your "approach" makes all the difference. The key is a positive focus. Meaning, what works best is

incorporating healthy foods you truly enjoy versus ditching your favorites or forcing yourself to eat foods you

do not like. This was the encouraging conclusion from three separate studies involving 542 study subjects.

Whether the goal was weight loss or improved well-being, the researchers noted the following distinct

differences in the successful study subjects relative to those who failed:

· Those with the most success displayed more self-control and used a positive approach, commonly

focusing on eating more of the healthy foods they liked, while restricting the unhealthy foods they did not love

in the first place.

· Those with the least success exhibited poor self-control and commonly used a negative approach,

typically restricting or avoiding foods they loved, while choosing or "forcing" themselves to eat healthy foods

they did not enjoy.

This new science is perfectly consistent with the realities of human behavior change. We all tend to triumph

more readily when we focus on pleasurable, positive, and truly doable changes like eating more of the healthy

foods we like versus eating those we don't and totally nixing our favorite foods.
