Tell us about Two’s Company’s origins
Gilly Craft and Nick Sunderland met some years
ago when they were invited to a Hotel Forum in the
city. Both were well established interior designers
but had a passion for hotel design.
Gilly and her team worked mainly in the
commercial sector and Nick in the high end
residential sector both in the UK and internationally.
It made perfect sense for these two designers to
join forces bringing a wealth of experience and
expertise to Two’s Company.
How did the idea for this year’s IHS Hotel Room
of the Future come about?
We were at the show last year on a fact-finding
mission with a view of possibly getting involved.
SPACE Editor Can Faik introduced us to the
organisers. They expressed an interest in Two’s
participating as guest designers for the 2018
showpiece stand. This year’s theme is technology
and with our experience in home technology it was
a perfect fit.
What would you say is unique about Two’s
Company’s styling, both with this year’s IHS
installation and in general interior design?
We will be combining textures, unusual materials
and structural innovation for this year’s show and
this is part of our combined as well as individual
style. Contemporary styling, coupled with a
timeless approach and making sure we are on the
same page with products and services is really vital.
How does Two’s Company’s design style and
ethics fit the requirements of hospitality projects?
The client is the most important factor in this
process, and it is key to manage their expectations.
Budgeting, scheduling and sustainability go hand-
in-hand. Individual styling is important in any hotel
but has to be factored with an economical
approach on design and fit out.
What is good design? Is it purely down to
aesthetics, or does practicality come first?
We believe they go hand-in-hand. Good design is
something that has to fit several factors, practicality
and aesthetics are important. Rooms take hard
knocks, so the materials used are paramount, but
they have to look fabulous as well as be hard
wearing and of course be of a high standard.
Knowledge of materials and how they perform as
well as their aesthetics is where our expertise
comes into play.
What drives your passion for design?
Creating a unique and individual style for each
project, seeing it through to completion and being
proud to share it with others. It’s the pleasure a
client gains from the design that makes it all
worthwhile. Solving a problem and then seeing the
finished result is very satisfying, it is always there for
prosperity!
