paper for the SCRIBE and Friends of the
Hampden Seniors provide postage.
Many thanks to both organizations for
supporting the Hampden Senior Center!
Greetings!
Wow! What a cold snap we had. The negative temperatures and wind
chills were enough to keep me inside with a mug of hot chocolate and
a warm blanket by the fire! Now it’s almost 50 degrees outside…
maybe that groundhog was right, maybe we will see an early spring. If
we do get another cold snap, please remember to check on your
neighbors and friends that might need a little extra assistance.
Be sure to sign up early for the St. Patrick’s Day breakfast on March
10th. We are welcoming our favorite Irish Duo, Glenshane! Thanks to
the Hampden cultural council for sponsoring this entertainment. Also,
our Easter luncheon will take place on March 24th. These are two
events you don’t want to miss!
Just a reminder that the senior center will take your old cell phones
and recycle them through the National Council on Aging (NCOA).
NCOA will send a check to the senior center for the value of the
phones and this money will be used for programs and activities.
The senior center will be closed on Friday March 25th for Good
Friday.
Have a blessed Easter. Stay warm and hope to see you soon!

TAX ARTICLE
Amazingly, it is again time to gather all tax related
information to prepare for filing federal and state taxes! Call
now for appointments with our AARP Foundation
volunteers.
The information to bring with you is:
social security statements (1099-SSA)
W2 forms
1099’s (pensions, retirement, interest, IRA
withdrawals, etc.)
dividend and capital gain statements and any other forms
you receive specific to taxes.
The bank or company that sends the statement
usually identifies it as tax related. If you are in doubt, bring it
with you.
If you itemize:
have all health related expenses
contributions to charities,
real estate taxes
mortgage interest
excise tax
Remember, for MA state filing, real estate taxes (paid in the
calendar year 2015) are used for the Circuit Breaker tax credit!
Also bring last years (2014) return with you!
CIRCUIT BREAKER TAX CREDIT
The Massachusetts “Circuit Breaker” is a tax
credit (up to $1,050) for seniors 65 and older
who pay more than 10% of their income on
property taxes. Rent? If 25% of your rent exceeds 10% of
your annual income, you qualify for the Circuit Breaker.
If you qualify, each dollar of taxes or rent that you pay
over 10% of your income provides you with a credit on
your state income taxes. To claim this credit, you must
file a state tax return even if you do not owe any taxes.
Income and residency requirements must be met.
