In early June, I got a short email from fellow QSLmanager and friend Steve Wheatley, KU9C.“Bob, would you like to join me in Bermuda at
Ed Kelly’s (VP9GE) place for the IARU HFChampionship contest?” Ed runs a very ham-friendly guest house, with two apartments specifi-cally focused on hams, with antennas alreadyinstalled and rigs available (unless you prefer tobring your own).
Well, after giving it some thought, I said “Whynot? Sounds like fun!” I left most of the planning toSteve since he has been there several times andhe knows the routine.
CostI couldn’t complain about the cost at all. The air-fare turned out to be about $300 roundtrip fromNewark, New Jersey. And the apartment/shackrental was $170/day. So the per-person share washalf of that. Prices in Bermuda are fairly high.Expect food costs to be higher than what you areused to. If Ed is your host, he will pick you up atthe airport and take you to the local supermarketwhere you can purchase pretty much everythingthat you would need. We were surprised to see somany Shop Rite brand items on the shelves. Itwould be a good idea to think about what you willneed in advance. We brought our own favorite cof-fee from home. That was a good idea, as it turnedout. Since there are no easily accessible restau-rants nearby for a quick breakfast, I suggest buy-
ing breakfast items when you shop on the way in.Although sometimes there can be leftover items inthe cabinets from previous visitors, you shouldn’tcount on them being there. The apartment has anice-sized refrigerator, so stocking up on milk, eggs, butter, cold cuts, cold drinks, etc., is a goodthing to consider. There are ice trays in the freez-er. Make up some ice and stash in a zipper bag? There is an electric stove, microwave, 4-cup cof-fee maker (with plenty of filters), a full complementof dishes, silverware, pots and pans, and dishsoap. My general overview of the apartments is“basic & clean.” Well worth the cost for Bermuda, where hotel rooms can cost $400/night and don’tinclude ham radio, of course! In any event, checkwith Ed for current pricing and availability. A two-night deposit will be required. All stores and restau-rants accept U.S. dollars as well as Bermuda dol-lars. The exchange is equal.
Ed’s QTH and Ham AccommodationsEd’s place sits high on a hill. You will have a niceocean view where you can watch the occasionalcruise ship pass by.
There are two apartments available. Both are onthe lower level. Both are air conditioned. Apartment#7 is the one we stayed in and has the best accessto the ham antennas. As such, it will be set up inadvance for you. The standard setup is for oneradio. Most of the antennas will be made availablethrough a remote coax switch. Should you requiretwo radio positions, then it would be best to dis-cuss this with Ed since it will require bypassing theremote coax switch to one degree or another. All

bands are available from 160 through 6 meters. However, getting on the WARC bands (30-17-12) might require you toerect something at the moment, since Ed’s A3WS WARCYagi is currently in disrepair. KU9C and I left a WARC(30/17/12) wire dipole that can be erected. For 6 meters, thereis a small Yagi available that will need to be erected on a fen-cepost. Bear in mind that Ed’s place sits high on a hill with afull northerly exposure, giving a clear path to the west, northand east, so it is not necessary to get antennas very high.Currently there is also a satellite setup available that KU9Cleft behind. If you are interested in any of the antennas men-tioned that need to be set up, or the satellite setup, pleasediscuss in advance with Ed so he can help you plan on how
to use them. The main antennas are dipoles/inverted veeson 160, 80, 40, and an A4WS tribander on 20-15-10 (rotorcontrol provided in the apartment #7 shack). Please be pre-pared to help erect or possibly repair antennas.
Apartment #7 is set up with a separate bedroom with twotwin beds and a full bathroom with a tub/shower. The bed-room has a door that can be closed. The kitchen/diningarea/sitting room serves as the ham shack. It also has akitchen table and a couch.
Apartment #5 is next door and is a studio apartment withan all-in-one room (beds, kitchen, sitting, and dining areas). There is a pass through into Apartment #5 for the threedipoles (160-80-40). However, the tribander (20-15-10)

needs to stay in Apartment #7 since therotor and remote antenna switch con-trollers are there. I suggest only usingApartment #5 for overflow sleepingquarters if your group exceeds twopeople and use the “ham shack” inApartment #7.
But you do have other options. Thereare a couple of other possibilities in Ed’s“aluminum pile.” I am sure specialarrangements can be made if you dis-cuss them in advance with Ed and seeif he is able to accommodate.
Radios: Ed has radios; however, youshould discuss in advance what is avail-able. For sure you will want to bring yourown headsets, appropriate adapters, foot switch, telegraph key/keyer, laptopfor logging, interface cables, etc. If youhave a compact radio that you like, andyou can pack it in your suitcase, thatmight be a good alternative for you. Webrought two Yaesu FT-450s and theyworked fabulously. Ed has a couple of45-amp 12-volt power supplies so youwon’t need to pack yours. Check inadvance to make sure that you canbring radios into Bermuda. I stronglysuggest bringing in a copy of yourBermuda license, which Ed will assistyou with acquiring. You may want toconsider asking Ed if there are any sup-plies that he needs. Leaving a length ofcoax, coax connectors, etc., would be anice gesture and will help Ed keepthings functioning for future visitors.

are plenty of other restaurants scatteredall around the island. But as far as Icould tell, the pizza place is the only onethat delivers.
Overall, Steve and I had a most enjoy-able five days at Ed’s place! We trav-eled to Hamilton on the bus one day andgot a quick view of the small city wheremany of the cruise ships dock. It is worththe ride to wander around the shops andrestaurants. Our radio activity wasfocused on three things. First was par-ticipating in the IARU HF Radio Champ-ionship contest. We put in about 22
hours each with Steve doing SSB andme doing CW as VP9HQ. Second,Steve did a lot of satellite activity asKU9C/VP9. Third, I did most of my HFactivity outside the contest on theWARC bands (especially 30 meters) asN2OO/VP9.
A Little About Ed…Ed was a wonderful host and we enjoyedhis company as well as our radio activityimmensely. Ed’s paternal family arrivedin Bermuda from GM (Scotland) around1750. His maternal grandfather arrived
from D4 (Cape Verde) in the late 1800s.Ed arrived in 1931, the same year theBermuda Railway started in VP9. Ed wasfirst licensed in 1948. He got his VP9GElicense in 1968. His other calls areHBØTXD, G4BHW, GW4BHW, VP9I. Edgraduated from Webster University in1982 with an MA (Business Admini-stration & Business Management). In1983, Ed started chasing total solareclipses — chased 16 — saw 14 and 2not visible though clouds. In December2005, Ed was awarded the Medal ofHonour by Queen Elizabeth II for com-munity service. He is also a retired lieu-tenant in the Hamilton Volunteer FireBrigade. In addition to ham radio, Ed isan avid photographer whose work hasbeen featured on a Bermuda postagestamp. He especially enjoys photo-graphing sunrises and sunsets. Ed cur-rently serves on the Bermuda StampDesign Committee.
We highly recommend anyone in-terested to consider a visit. Be awarethat most of the big contests get takenquickly. But as I discovered, a lot offun can be had operating outside ofthe contests.

The sunset view from the shack is awesome.
Oops…Milli-Micro Micro-Milli…
In the “RF Filters for Field Day” article in the June issue, the caption on Table 1erroneously stated that inductance values were in millihenries (mH), rather than thecorrect microhenries (µH). We apologize for any confusion and promise to re-readthat section of the license manual on metric units.
Mystery Photo in July 2017 Table of ContentsThe photo, which was labeled 17 in the Table of Contents, was not properly iden-
tified. They were the team of MØA, who came in second in the Multi-Single LowPower category in the WPX RTTY Contest. The team was comprised of (from l. tor.): Roger, GØBSU, and Chris, G8APB, who are proudly showing off their Caterham7 homebrew sports car, which is their second hobby.
