Winterthur, DE November 17, 2006—Two marvelous paintings by Jamie Wyeth, Sable and New Year’s Calling,

bring the rolling hills and snowy landscapes of the Brandywine Valley indoors for Yuletide at Winterthur:

Wrapped in Holiday Style, through January 7.

Sable, painted by Wyeth in 1988, features an elegant fur-dressed woman in a sleigh amid a snowy landscape.

Paused as if in mid-journey, her facial expression shows Wyeth at his best. New Year’s Calling, highlighting a du

Pont family tradition that dates to the early 1800s, features deep drifts of snow surrounding a long line of autos

making their way to a mansion in the distance. The male occupants are participating in “New Year’s Calling,”

when they spend the day traveling to visit female members of the family who have gather at selected homes. A

young face peers at the viewer through the window of an imposing black Cadillac. Could it be Wyeth himself?

Both paintings are on display in the Marlboro Room, one of three rooms decorated for 21st century-celebrations

by New York interior designer Thomas Jayne. As one of America’s top decorators, Jayne’s distinct approach

builds on tradition while remaining connected and relevant to contemporary lifestyles, demands, and tastes. His

restyled Winterthur rooms—sophisticated, clever, and fun—will impress visitors with their elegant but whimsical

style.

Jamie Wyeth is a third-generation American artist: son of Andrew Wyeth, among the country’s most well-known

painters, and the grandson of Newell Convers Wyeth, whose distinctive illustrations graced the classic novels of

Yuletide tour features Wyeth Paintings Add one

Robert Louis Stevenson, James Fenimore Cooper, and Sir Walter Scott. The Wyeths, who have lived in the

Brandywine Valley since 1902, also have a close connection to Winterthur. Andrew Wyeth made many trips to

the estate when painting a portrait of Winterthur founder Henry Francis du Pont in 1964.

Yuletide at Winterthur: Wrapped in Holiday Style presents rooms decorated for lavish holiday celebrations

featuring vintage fashions, traditional trees, and Christmas wrapping customs. The tour is offered through January

7, 2007. Tickets may be purchased online at www.winterthur.org/yuletide. Yuletide at Winterthur is sponsored by

Admission to the Yuletide tour is $20 for adults; $18 for students and seniors; $10 for ages 2-11 and includes

entrance to Fashion in Film: Period Costumes for the Screen. This exhibition features 36 exquisite costumes worn

by Drew Barrymore, Anjelica Huston, Elizabeth Taylor, Nicole Kidman, and others in film adaptations of such

classic novels as Dangerous Liaisons, Sense and Sensibility, and A Room with a View. Organized by the Trust for

Museum Exhibitions, Washington, D.C., in cooperation with Cosprop Ltd., London, England. Fashion in Film is

made possible by Wilmington Trust with additional funding provided by The Diane and Harry Levin Foundation.
