    DATIVE CASE USE IN TWO MINUTES

    LATIN VERBS THAT MAY SIGNAL USE OFTHE DATIVE CASE:GIVING

    do, dare - to give (give to someone)

    (NB dedit he gave/has given unpredictable perfect)trado, tradere to hand over (hand over to someone)

    SHOWINGmonstro, monstrare - to show (show to someone)

    (we derive demonstrate from monstro)ostendo, ostendere - to show (show to someone)

    TELLINGdico, dicere - to say, to tell (dxit he said) (say to someone)

    narro, narrare - to narrate, to tell (tell to someone)nnti, nntire to announce (announce to someone)respondeo, respond re - to respond, to answer (respond to someone)

    Be on high alert for these verbs. They will probably be followed by a direct object (accusative)and an indirect object (dative). Mark them by using an arrow as an underline.

    E.g.: 1. Librum sorori dabat. He was giving the book to [his] sister.

    2. Cibum viro dabo. I will give the food to [my] husband.

    3. Equum agricolae dedit. He gave the horse to the farmer.

    4. Fabulas fratribus narrabamus. We used to tell stories to [our] brothers.

    5. Filiis fabulas narrabunt. They will tell stories to [their] daughters.

    6. Narravistine malam fabulam Marco?Did you tell the bad story to Marcus?

    7. Veritatem mihi dicet. He will tell the truth to me.
