One of the great advantages of a film festival is the possibility ofdiscovering the invisible. It seems paradoxical but it is not: if itweren't for the samples, most of the films that are made ormade in this world would be in a limbo where few people wouldknow about their existence. It is also clear that this hasworsened in recent years, when the international distributionand exhibition system has experienced an unprecedentedconcentration that has ultimately caused the dissolution ofaudiences for most forms of cinema . together with Bafici, totally complementary - has in its 34thedition two retrospectives that show this enormous rescuecapacity.
The first is about one of the least mentioned masters of classicHollywood, John M. Stahl. Although many of his films havebeen hits by audiences almost everywhere in the decades of the30s, 40s and 50s, today he is not recognized as he should.Formally precise, melodrama cultivator (three of his best films -Sublime Obsession, Imitation of Life and Interlude - were thenre-made by Douglas Sirk, his most important disciple, and arealso masterpieces), one of the most important points of Stahl isthe look on female characters.Independent, with their ownwishes, outside the established norm, as in the melodramatradition, the passion they generate contrasts with the socialcontext that prevents happiness. In all these films, many ofthem little seen or disappeared from the circulation years ago ,a true teacher appears with the ability to generatecomplex psychological profiles with few strokes. Amongwhat remains to see, is his masterpiece That heaven judges her,one of the great films about the tragedy of jealousy, with amonumental Gene Tierney .
La otra restrospectiva es contemporánea. Nina Menkes es unarealizadora independiente de los Estados Unidos,desgraciadamente poco difundida fuera de su país, que estápresente en el Festival -participó con voz central en el Foro deCine y Perspectiva de Género que se realizó en el marco de lamuestra por segunda vez-. Sus películas no se parecen a nada:combinan temas filosos y controvertidos, siempre desde elrescate de una perspectiva femenina y feminista, con momentosque acercan sus creaciones al más puro surrealismo. No se tratade alegorías forzadas ni simbolismos pour la galérie, sino deverdaderos ejercicios de la imaginación que lanzan alespectador mucho más allá de la trama de cada filme.En la retrospectiva están todas sus películas, lo que incluye sufilme más conocido, Magdalena Viraga, y una gran películade imaginación como Phantom Love. Festival y descubrimientoson sinónimos.
