Twitter:Summary:• Post one tweet per day

• Out of those 7 tweets per week, 4-5 should be personal/human/actual tweets and only 2-3 should be promotional.

• Each tweet can be viewed as a microblog

• Microblogging is a message with a limited number of characters, it can consist of a short sentence or fragment, a link, an image, or even a video.

• Microblogging is simply a shorter version of a blog - which allows for more frequent posts with less detailed information.

• Fans are more likely to engage with a message that sounds "real" rather than promotional, so once there is something to promote, you will already have their interest and can therefore promote yourself more effectively.

• This document will outline the following:

• Twitter Basics

• Successful Campaigns

• Give Aways & Promotions

• Unsuccessful Campaigns

• Twitter for Mobile Devices

• Procedure: Signing-up Via SMS

• Creating a bit.ly Link

• Twitter Vocabulary

Twitter Basics:• Using the "#" hash tag symbol indicates a trending topic, which is a great way to increase

visibility on Twitter. It is a means for people who share common interests to find each other, and to begin following one another.

• Example Tweet: "Spending the day in sunny #SantaBarbara" - will tag the message into similar messages regarding #SantaBarbara.

• Use the "@" symbol to tweet or reply to other public figures and everyday Twitter users, who might be talking to you or about you.

• Example Tweet: "@johncmayer - great show last night at the #HollywoodBowl"

• This will show up in John Mayer's replies in hopes that he will reply back to you, thus encouraging his fans/followers to then look up @yourname and start following you too.

• View people who @reply you by clicking the @yourname on the right hand column of the home screen. Take advantage of this opportunity for fan engagement.

• By using a "#" hash tag symbol the message is linked into the other people who may be talking about a show at the #HollywoodBowl (although not necessarily John Mayer’s performance at the Hollywood Bowl), thus encouraging more followers for different reasons.

• From the Twitter blog:  Starting an update with "@veronica" designates a message to Veronica specifically, much as you would in a group conversation. Also like a group conversation, she's not the only one who can see what is being sent. Twitter has also made is easier for users to reply to messages by adding the "swoosh" arrow at the bottom of every tweet - which can be found to the left of the “retweet” button.

• To "whisper" something instead, start a message with "d veronica"—what is referred to as a "direct message." (A person must be following you in order for you to direct message them, but not to @reply them.)

• A Direct Message is like a “whisper” in that only you and the individual you are interacting with can see the message. Direct Messages do not show up on your profile and cannot be found on any part of Twitter except in that individual’s personal inbox.

Successful Campaigns:Attributes of a successful Twitter campaign include but are not limited to the following:

• Genuine interaction

• Using “#” hash tags, “@” replying or tweeting to other users, especially the ones who “@yourname” and direct messaging friends when necessary.

• Uploading media rich tweets using Twitpic.com and Twitvid.com

• Give Aways & Promotions

• Ex: Ticket Giveaways

• Tweet to enter contest - gives a viral platform for each person's followers to check out the artist's Twitter contest and retweet themselves - thus creating the much sought after snow ball effect.

• G. Love had a successful give away campaign when he had his followers tweet “I wanna see @GLove ‘s show tomorrow!” Participating fans were excited and engaged, and by the end of the campaign his total number of his twitter followers had dramatically increased.

Pictures & Videos on Twitter To post media to Twitter, syndicate the account to Twitpic.com and Twitvid.com, this will provide more of media rich dynamic to help engage the fan-base.

• Post videos and pictures at least twice a week

Give Aways & Promotions:Ticket giveaways and promotions are where users tweet or re-tweet (RT) to enter themselves into a contest. This is a great way to get your fans talking about you to their followers, which will only help in the promotion your page.

Here’s how it works:

1. A fan can enter in a contest by tweeting about it.

2. Then their followers see the tweet, and hopefully begin to follow the artist being tweeted about.

Page 5: Twitter Guide

3. Then these newly acquired fans retweet what their friend said about the artist to enter the contest for themselves

4. Thus creating the viral or snow ball effect.

Oniracom will create a tweet that is to be retweeted by people who enter the contest -

• Example Tweet: reference  the Jonas Brothers Twitter contest "Tweet to unlock the free#jonasbrothers mp3 'Hey You' and for a chance to win JB tix and#OfficeMax gift cards! http://bit.ly/bjwvve"

• Maroon 5's Twitter promotion: "RT maroon5 Pre-Order the NEW @maroon5 album#HANDSALLOVER on iTunes now! http://bit.ly/M5HandsAllOveriTunes".

Users simply retweet (by typing RT or selecting the retweet button below the original tweet), which automatically enters them into the contest. Then we choose the winner based on random selection of who retweeted this message.  Again, using the "#" symbol indicates a trending topic, which not only increases visibility on Twitter, but allows us to easily track who's talking about the contest, which helps to narrow down contest participants.

The client is responsible for providing free tickets, signed merchandise, or digital downloads, etc..., but Oniracom will handle promoting the contest and deciding on a winner.

Unsuccessful Campaigns:1. Do not post strictly promotional content:

a. Try not to promote yourself too much - its understandable if you have something big happening at the moment - but the majority of tweets should sound real or human.

b. When people only see links to your website or socials, they are going to see you as a spammer, and may even block you.

c. These promotional tweets typically are not something that they can quickly absorb without having to navigate away from the page.

d. This is why pictures and videos are important to have on your Twitter account, they serve as an easy, engaging and entertaining read.

2. Do not follow random people just to increase numbers

a. Just because you follow them - does not mean that they will always ‘auto-follow’ you back.

b. In most cases when they do start to follow you, it is because they are doing the same thing you are - trying to promote themselves and increase overall numbers, without actually reading what you are writing, posting or promoting. This is annoying, spammy Twitter behavior.

c. Instead, try to go a more organic route and let your tweets speak for themselves and attract people that way.

Twitter for Mobile Devices: For most smart phones (iPhone, Blackberry, and Droid)  you can add the Twitter application through the App Store or App World depending on what service you use - just search Twitter in the App Store and download the FREE, most highly recommended version.

For other mobile devices (non-smart phones) you can tweet through text (SMS) by registering your phone on www.mobile.twitter.com: (http://bit.ly/twittersupport)

Procedure: Signing Up Via SMS

1. Send a text to your Twitter code with the word START (First find your mobile phone's Twitter code here: http://bit.ly/ckA6YU (US Users: 40404)

2. They will reply and ask you to sign up if you're new or reply with your username if you already have an account, which you do.

3. Send your username (do not send any additional characters in the message, or they won't be able to read it correctly)

4. When Twitter asks for your password, carefully send your password to them (remember: passwords are case sensitive!)

5. Twitter will ask you to send "OK" if you want to use Twitter on your phone. Send OK, and you're all set! Now you can send messages to your Twitter code, and they will post as Tweets on your Twitter profile for all your friends to read.

6. To get others' updates delivered to your phone now, you'll need to turn on mobile updates via web (http://bit.ly/cVehfm) for those whose Tweets you wish to see on your phone. Until you do this, you will not receive any Tweets to your mobile phone. Check out these other phone commands (http://bit.ly/93vaLr) for more tips and tricks!

Creating a bit.ly Link: If you have a long link that you want to post to twitter -

1. Type bit.ly into a new tab in a web browser

2. Copy the link that needs to be shrunk into the “shorten your links and share from here” box on the bit.ly website

3. Once you paste it into the box a smaller, green box will appear bellow that says “Your Link” with an arrow pointing to a new bit.ly link

4. Copy this new bit.ly link and post it into a tweet - or anywhere on the web!

Twitter Vocabulary:

“@” ReplyDefinition: Starting my update with "@veronica" designates that I'm addressing or replying to her, specifically, much as you would in a group conversation. Also like a group conversation, she's not the only one who can see what I'm saying.

Context: The following tweet addresses three Twitter users: “@oniricrecords on @KCSB this morning in #santabarbara - playing @MarcBMusic - what's up Mr. American?!” 1.OniricRecords 2.KCSB and 3.MarcBMusic.

“#” Hash TagDefinition: A hash tag is a keyword you are referencing. They usually are short names for things or they can link you into a trending topic. It is a way of tagging your post into an associated group of similar topics when you search for them. (Which is how words become hyperlinked when you post them into Twitter)

Context: I use a “#” hash tag when talking about something like I am going for a #run or I am at the SouthBySouthWest event #SXSW - Ex: “Just got to #SXSW, so pumped!”

bit.lyDefinition: bit.ly is a website that allows you to convert long links into short ones (which is much better for Twitter users, since each tweet is limited to 140 characters (you don’t want a link to take up your entire tweet - or else you won’t be able to explain why you are posting the link in the first place).

Context: “Check out my new song on iTunes, http://bit.ly/iTunes”

Direct MessageDefinition: If I wanted to "whisper" something instead, I'd start my message with "d veronica"—what we call a "direct message." (A person must be following you in order for you to direct message them, but not to @reply them.) You can also send a direct message by visiting the twitter user’s profile and selecting the “settings” button (it looks like a wheel or a sun) near the top of their profile and selecting direct message username from the drop down menu. You can check your direct messages on the home screen just below @yourname.

Context: I send a direct message to veronica on her birthday’: “d veronica happy birthday”

Following/FollowersDefinition: Users may subscribe to other author’s tweets—this is known as following and subscribers are known as followers.

Context: I recently started following @chelseahandler and to my surprise she became one of my followers too.

MicroblogDefinition: Microblogging is a message with a limited number of characters, it can consist of short sentence fragment, a link, an image or even a video. A microblog is simply a shorter version of your typical blog - which enables you to post more frequently with less details.

Context: Twitter is a platform centered around microblogging.

Page 8: Twitter Guide

Promotional TweetDefinition: A tweet that promotes your work or other sites.

Context: “Check out my new song on iTunes, http://bit.ly/iTunes”

Retweet (RT)Definition: A retweet is the highest form of Twitter compliments. To retweet someone’s tweet simply type RT before copying another user’s name and original tweet into your tweet box - once you post this tweet, it will be sent out to all of your followers. You can also select the “retweet” button below any tweet to copy the post to your followers.

Context: The retweet (or “RT”) allows Twitter users to share the best links, tweets, and gems they find from others using the service.

TweetDefinition: Tweets are text-based posts of up to 140 characters displayed on the user's profile page.

Context: Tweets are publicly visible by default, however senders can restrict message delivery to their friends list.
