A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was. The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was. The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up

everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous ‘yes’.

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

“Now, I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions-- and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full,” said the professor as the laughter subsided “The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.” “The sand is everything else--the small stuff. If you put the sand into the jar first,’ he continued, ‘there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time

Our Motto: “Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge”

By the time most of you are reading this the rally season will have kicked off with our trip to Lafayette for the Louisiana District Rally. Our good friends Jere & Maurine Pyburn are stepping down as District Directors and Brent & Roxie Comeaux will be assuming the duties. I am sure they will do a great job. As always, we are looking forward to making the trip to Louisiana to enjoy some of that great Cajun food. Chapter C has a new Chapter Director. Larry Fulbright took over the leadership the first of March. His first meeting was a great success and I am sure many more fun and successful meetings will follow. As most of you know, Chris & Pam DePriest are not getting to rest after stepping down as they have taken on new duties as your Assistant District Directors. Our 6th annual Rider Education Weekend April 11th – 13th is shaping up to be another success. We have lots of interest in the ERC and Trike courses and the CPR & First Aid. If you need any of those and haven’t sent in

your registration, do so as soon as possible to insure your participation. Those of you who are planning on attend-ing the District Rally in Harrison over Memo-rial Day Weekend need to get your reserva-tions made at the hotels. I am told they will fill up over the holiday weekend. Our room blocks will be released the 15th of April. Hotel information is on the District website home-page www.argwrra.org and you can also find a rally registration form there for either mailing or submission on the website with payment via Pay Pal. Lastly, the second rally of the season will be our Region H Rally in Marshall, TX. It is scheduled for the weekend of April 17th – 19th. They have some special activities planned and over 30 vendors registered. “So Mosey on Down To Marshall” and join in the FUN… Until next time, ride safe and “Ride With Pride”.

Controlling Your Lane Two wheels are enough to own a lane

By: James R. Davis Lane position should be chosen based, among other things, on establishing escape routes, making you visible to others, staying out of the blind spots of other vehicles, and road conditions. What is often overlooked, in my opinion, is the concept of 'controlling your lane'. For example, assume you are riding on surface streets in a city and are stopped at a traffic light preparing to make a right turn. Logic suggests that you should be in the right track of your lane, but it is safer, I suggest, to be closer to the left track.

Why? Because while nearer the left track of your lane you CONTROL the lane. There are people that upon seeing you in the right track with

your right turn signal flashing will slide their vehicles into the lane beside you and try to share the lane - to get a jump off the line

when the light changes.

BY THE BOOK By: Dale Wingrove Region H Trainer

The “By The Book” articles are intended to help familiarize Volunteer Leaders and GWRRA Members with the guidelines, policies, procedures, and information contained in the GWRRA Officer’s Guidebook. Please feel free to reprint these articles in Region, District and Chapter newsletters. This Article is a reprint of a August 2006 by former Region Trainer Dave Barham. Communication, What does it mean and why do we care? Continued from February 2006 Way back in February of 2006, we published an article emphasizing the importance of effective communication. I thought this might be a good time to continue discussion on this very important topic. Our Officers Guide Book encourages the use of effective communications skills throughout our Association. The other half of effective communication is good listening. If should be automatic, like breathing. After all, we listen all the time. Or do we? The fact is, listening and hearing are not the same thing. Hearing is just the first stage of listening. Listening is a communication process and requires active participation. Like any other skill, listening competency is achieved through learning and practice. Listening is a master skill. Some ways to practice your listening skills: Stop Talking – it may sound obvious but we can’t add to our knowledge or understanding if we are busy talking. No Multi-Tasking – In order to become an effective listener, you must learn to manage what goes on in your own mind. Good listening requires the temporary suspension of all unrelated thoughts. Give speakers 100% of your attention along with the time they need to complete their thoughts. If you’re thinking of your response before they are done, you cannot learn all they have to offer. Listen Actively – A good listener is not just a silent receptacle, passively receiving the thoughts and feeling of others. To be an effective listener, you must respond with verbal and non-verbal cues, which let the speaker know that you are listening, and understanding. Verbal feedback works best when delivered in the form of brief statements rather than questions. Statements allow you to paraphrase and reflect what you’ve heard. This accomplishes several things. It allows you to be sure that you understood the speaker correctly, affirms the speakers success, and encourages the speaker to elaborate further.

“I think I’ll learn more from listening. Anything I would say, I already know.” – Anonymous “I think one lesson I have learned is that there is no substitute for paying attention.” – Diane Sawyer

10 Steps to Effective Listening 1. Face the speaker and maintain eye contact. 2. Be attentive yet relaxed. 3. Keep an open mind. 4. Listen to the words and try to picture what the speaker is saying. 5. Don’t interrupt and don’t impose your “solutions”. 6. Wait for the speaker to pause to clarify statements.

7. Ask questions only to ensure understanding of what has been said, avoiding questions that disrupt the speaker’s train of thought. 8. Try to feel what the speaker is feeling. 9. Give the speaker regular feedback. 10. Pay attention to what isn’t said – to feelings, facial expressions, gestures, posture, and other non-verbal cues

That you only have two wheels is of no consequence - you OWN the whole lane that they would try to share with you. If you were to change your mind

and elect to not make that right turn, you would be in trouble. Worse, should that sharing vehicle actually decide to make a right turn too, you could easily be forgotten (in his blind spot) and he could drive right over

you while making that turn.

Controlling your lane is as important as any other consideration when you choose your lane position.

What no one had a clue of on that day in May of 2006

6

Aarrrgh,,, It’s me, Captain Rob, the coolest and most successful pirate of these modern times!!!

PAGE 10 G W R R A VOLUME 10, ISSUE 4

What you all may remember from that day in May of 2006

Smile for the camera. Oh man, this really proves the importance of team work. This pirate backdrop really highlights our costumes !!!

Oh yea??? You just hang around for a couple of more years big boy for the biggest surprise of your modern day life!!! Haha!!!

A surprise 50th birthday party?

Ok, so you all got me real good! I didn’t think anyone could pull off something like this on me, but man was I wrong. I could tell afterwards that this party was orchestrated by a lot of people. I’ve got to tell you, I was speechless that day when I walked in. I really thought I had walked into a photography room for picture taking in the Nashville area! It’s not very often that I can’t get words out of my mouth but this was one of those occasions. From Joe Hadaway picking out Papa Pablano’s in Nashville, to Linda’s efforts in putting it all together along with some accomplices (hmmm,,, I wander who they might have ALL been?), it went off without a hitch! I couldn’t figure out why everyone was content with just setting around at the restaurant and visiting when we could be riding. Even poor Jeannie setting there and eating her meal so darn slow, what a trooper she was. Also Linda planning on picking up pictures at the motel on our lunch ride that was not a very good idea in my mind. I know I gave her a hard time about that all day. Bless her heart she was really trying to be pa t ien t with me. As most of you probably know, I do not have m u c h patience when it comes to messing up a planned event. I w a s stressing out about keeping our ride in check and on schedule! Sometimes I even disap-

point myself with my attitude and lack of concern for others. I would like to take this opportu-nity to say thank you to all of you for making this birthday a special one in my life. It sure is nice to have family and friends that care about you and want to be a part of your life. But heck,,, that’s what makes GWRRA and Chapter “T” such a fun group of folks to be around!!!! Well I hope you are all happy with what you did to me that day, it probably feels real good to get one over on me for a change! Thanks everyone.

From the birthday boy, Wrong Way Rob

… and I always thought I was good at cooking-up surprizes unbeknownst to anyone else!!! You got me!

Page 11: Twin City Tour Riders Revie › Newsletters › AR-T › 2008-04_AR-T_Newsletter.pdf · empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if

We have been told now several times that the Chapter is making plans to have available plenty of rides and activities scheduled to meet everyone’s riding needs. Well, it sure looks to me like whoever made those quotes sure do fully intend to stand firmly behind them. For those of you who could not make the ride to Nashville, Arkansas the other day really did miss out on a good day. Not only was Rob completely caught off guard with his kept-secret birthday party (and I don’t have a clue who was in on it with Linda!!!), but he was still able to pull off his planned day ride that he had been working so hard on with Joe Hadaway for eve-ryone to enjoy. After a delicious lunch at Papa Poblano’s, there in Nashville, everyone was able to migrate just down the road where Linda had everything set up for the big surprise. I wouldn’t say she misled Rob when she kept talking about having to go to this location for pictures. Believe me, there were a bunch taken and a bunch enjoyed during a slide show the kids had prepared in advance. Well, you can only take so many photos and eat just so much cake and ice cream and open just so many packages and then there comes that time when GoldWingers just have to hit the road,,, and that’s just what we did. Those who remained for the entire afternoon were soon led through a couple of hours or so of touring some of those well-known back roads of Arkansas which we have all heard of. Personally, I have grown up riding and driving many of the highways up throughout this entire area and I’m here to tell ya,,, all you have to do is make a left or right off those main roads occasionally and there opens up a completely different Arkansas which many of us have never seen,,, and it ain’t that far to travel to enjoy it. Now, all this riding was scheduled and done before we even

had the chance to finish up on our scheduled bowling nights. This way, there is never a dull moment for the members. This allows for a smooth transition from winter weather off-bike gaming to our much desired spring weather on-bike gaming better known as bike riding. I would rather not go into a lot of detail about the last bowl-ing night, but after my staff here at Newsletter Central had ap-parently overbooked my scheduling efforts, I was unable to bowl but when I realized the position they have forced me into, I was able to still get there in time to at least visit with those who did turn out for the finals. And I’m almost sure someone won in the end, but I’m just now sure because, as most of you know, I tend to try keeping up with the latest in news,,, or sometimes known as gossip,,,,,, oh well, it was a good time for all. So, you all better be getting ready to ride, because you all asked for it and as you notice the calendars in the newsletters, our weekends are starting to fill up real quick. We will continue to try letting you all know about upcoming events and rides in plenty of time to allow everyone to schedule those they would like to participate in on their calendars. And believe me, don’t always rely on your people to handle this for ya,,, they some-times get you in a bind, I think, just for a few laughs between cubicles. Ha! Ha!
