www.telfordwritersgroup.co.uk 18th October 2017 Dear Martin, I obtained your name as contact for the Telford Writers' Group from the Shropshire Community Directory web page and wondered whether you would be kind enough to forward the information below to your members. We shall be very grateful since WEA in Leominster is hoping to oer a much wider range of classes and study days in the future and these are some of our first oerings. WEA in Leominster is oering two one-day courses in aspects of Creative Writing and are looking for a few more people to enable the days to go ahead as we are obliged to attract a minimum number of students. The first study day is 'Blank Page Creative Writing' with Frank Bramwell on Thursday 26th October 2017. 10.00am - 5.00pm. Fee £25. This day will, as the title suggests, start with us looking at a blank page and go all the way to us presenting our results via liberating our creativity through the freedom of accepting the blankness, then consolidating first ideas and going on to discover the real story, discovering its USP and discarding the unnecessary and finally editing and getting ready for presentation. We shall work in small groups and, certainly for some of us who have signed up for the day, be stepping out of our comfort zone. At the end of the day there will be a whole group discussion about the day and our results, feedback, and looking ahead both for individuals and the group. If the day is successful Frank is willing to run a full course (2 hours one day a week for 6-8 weeks) next spring. Dear Martin,

I obtained your name as contact for the Telford Writers' Group from the Shropshire Community Directory web page and wondered whether you would be kind enough to forward the information below to your members.  We shall be very grateful since WEA in Leominster is hoping to offer a much wider range of classes and study days in the future and these are some of our first offerings.

WEA in Leominster is offering two one-day courses in aspects of Creative Writing and are looking for a few more people to enable the days to go ahead as we are obliged to attract a minimum number of students.

Frank has been actively writing and creating theatre for over fifteen years with professional productions in London, Birmingham, Manchester and elsewhere. He is highly experienced in all aspects of creative writing and is very keen to see and assist with work being published.

The day is held at Leominster Community Centre and full details will be sent to those who enrol.  Refreshments are available (30p per cup of tea/coffee including biscuits) and there is an break for an hour for lunch.  You can either bring a packed lunch and socialise with others in the group or wander into Leominster where there are some excellent cafes and coffee shops.

We shall need to have your enrolments by 18th October at the latest, and this can be done either through completing and returning the attached enrolment form together with your cheque, emailing me at [email protected], or online at www.wea.org.uk - course search. My telephone number is 01584 876461. People in receipt of certain benefits are exempt from paying the tuition fee.

The second study day will be 'Reading and Writing Poetry' with Fiona Sampson (this year's Poet in Residence for Herefordshire) on Thursday November 30th 2017. 10.00 - 4.00. Fee £22.50.

If anyone is interested in this study day, will they please contact me as detailed above and I will send full details. Fiona's study sessions on creating poetry and freeing creativity in all its written forms have been very well received by different writers' groups around Hereford this year.

I do hope some of you will join us for these sessions,

Many thanks,

Telford Writers’ Group Project

We came up with a project that is fun and would end up being something that the group has achieved together. We have no idea what the outcome will be yet but this months task was:

- To write a 500 word short story

or:

- A maximum of 40 lines of poetry.

Based on the theme:

The Death of A Stuffed Animal

We are looking forward to get together and go through them, there can only be two winners!

- You see a twenty-something guy wearing earbuds and laughing hard. What’s so funny?

- A woman addicted to eating cigarettes

- He’s not well but he doesn’t want anyone to know. How does he hide it

- Write a Facebook post as if you lived on the opposite side of the world. What are you doing there?

- There are 50 people left on earth. You each have specific role. What is your role?

Christmas Meet

As you know Christmas is approaching and I haven’t arranged the December meet yet because I wondered whether you would all like to do something different?

I have a couple of ideas:

1. We have the meet as normal but we all bring some buffet type food and we just play some fun (writing?) games & socialise.

2. We don’t book the room but instead book somewhere local and have a meal together out?

Let’s discuss in the meet and see if we can arrange a date to!

Take The Step

Lesson 1 When you’re writing a novel and wondering if it’s any good, theres nothing like a pile of published work to prove that people have been happy to print your words.

Lesson 2 Even ‘unpublished’ authors can get their name in print in a

variety of small ways, from letters to short stories, and experience all the sense of validation that goes with it.

Lesson 3 Writing short pieces for magazines will hone your skills and allow you to start earning money as a writer in a very short time. In the longer term, it will impress agents and publishers when you begin sending out a novel.

Homework Grab any magazines and newspapers you have to hand and spend an evening composing a letter that would fit in with the ones already there. Send it to them and let us know if they print it.

Literary Festival For Telford Celebrations Julie Louise Phillips visited us at the last meeting as part of the Telford @ 50 celebrations she is trying to organise a literary festival. She is applying for funding and some lovely people have agreed to join her in her madness! She is also keen to hear from authors, storytellers, poets, local businesses that might like to sponsor us or help out in some way, publishers, and anyone else who would like to help with the organisation, delivering adult or children's/family activities, or anything else. All very welcome & appreciated.

The date has been set for Saturday 14th April 2018 with activities also being held throughout the Easter holidays. She have set up a Facebook page for those interested so you can keep up to date & in touch. PM her if you're interested & want to be added to the closed Facebook page. It's hoped that this could become a regular annual event in Telford's calendar.

We agreed that we would take part in this and Karen has kindly offered to be the representative for the group so we need to have a discussion and bring some ideas for our next meet as there is a meeting for this at the end of October to discuss plans.

Thank you

If you have any questions or ideas that would like to see in the newsletter please let me know!
