Dear Parishioners :

DAY OF EMPOWERMENT FOR BLACK CATHOLICS– September 23, 2017

On September 23rd, 2017, Pax Christi U.S.A. along with Holy Savior Catholic Community will be hosting a seminar entitled, Day of Empowerment for Black Catholics”. The day will begin at 9AM and end at 2:45 PM. We extend this invitation to Black Catholics throughout the diocese; and we would like to invite those who wish to walk alongside us, in an effort to broaden communication, knowledge and fellowship among all members of the Body of Christ.

FROM THE PASTOR

Topics to be discussed are Catholic Social Teaching and how we can apply it to everyday life, as well as how to eliminate personal and systemic racism. We will also examine the contributions of Black Catholics to the Church in the United States.

Pax Christi International, is a Catholic peace and justice movement that seeks to model the Peace of Christ in its witness to the mandate of the nonviolence of the Cross.

DENNIS GILLEN, a retired attorney, will be available for consultation on legal matters every 2nd and 4th Wednesday of the month, from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM. Mr. Gillen has a broad knowledge of legal matters. If he does not have the needed expertise, he will refer you to another attorney. You may call the Church Office to schedule a time to meet with him.

PARISH SCHOOL OF RELIGION

Our P.S.R. program begins Wednesday evening, September 6. For grades 1 through 10, the program will take place at 6 Pm in our school building at 15th and Oliver. For Juniors and Seniors, we will meet at 7PM in the Church Office (Conference Room). This program is especially for our public school students, and I encourage parents to send their children and youth to these programs. Our children need the help of the Gospel and the teachings of Jesus Christ to help them navigate an increasingly complex world.

STEWARDSHIP: “WHO ARE YOU FOLLOWING?”

Today’s Gospel reading points to the extreme challenge all stewards face: “ Whoever wishes to come after me must deny his cross, and follow me.” It is easy for us to say that we want to follow Christ, but doing so requires great fortitude. The prophet Jeremiah understands this well. In the first reading , Jeremiah laments at being “duped” by the LORD, he feels like he was tricked into the role prophet, a job he never wanted. Yet at the end of his rant, even he has to admit that he literally cannot have it any other way. He knows in his heart that he must offer his life to the LORD. Thankfully, the Holy Spirit has given each of us similar fortitude, that we can confidently choose to deny ourselves and take up our crosses, following Jesus wherever he leads us!
