Twenty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time | September 8, 20193

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK | Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.

You never know what you are going to find when you start to clean out electronic files.

I have been trying to take time each week to pull up parish files and purge. When you are an administrator of a large parish, if you don’t clean up files, eventually you can’t find what you are looking for.

And lo and behold, I came across some writings I did on Dominican Preaching. I remember when I wrote these essays. It was for a presentation I gave on a Come and See Vocation Weekend at the Dominican House of Studies, in which we invite young men to come and see our life, and discern a possible vocation to the Order. So I am going to do a four-part series this month on Dominican preaching.

Dominican PreachingPart IIn late July of 1986 when I arrived here at St. Gertrude Priory to begin my novitiate, all I knew was that I wanted to be a preacher of the Gospel. I did not know how to preach and I relied on my superiors, teachers, mentors, and my own brothers living the life together to teach me how to be a Friar Preacher. And I can tell you that the Order has not let me down. If anything, the Order has more than provided for my desire to preach. If you receive a vocation to follow our way of life, to follow in the footsteps of our Holy Father St. Dominic, the many saints and blessed of the Order, the friars, nuns, sisters, and committed lay members of the Order, you are entering into a life of perfection, but perfection comes at a cost, literally the cost of your own person to put on Christ and be possessed by the Church to be used for the salvation of souls.

When I was very young, many many years ago, my family lived only one street up from our parish. Since I lived in a rather pious Catholic home, and had many brothers (thus free labor), we were always in church: singing in choir, serving Mass, funerals, weddings, Holy Hours, doing chores for the priests and the sisters, and involved in all

sorts of activities. One day I said to my mother, “It would be great if I could live down at the church all the time.” With a smile on her face, my dear mother said, “For you that is a very real possibility.” I believe my mother fostered my vocation from a very young age. Little did I know back then that God was already preparing me for life in the Church. I can say with complete joy, that living inside the Church, being possessed by the Church, is the greatest vocation that any person could ever receive.

Now, 33 years after receiving the habit, I can tell you much about the charism of the Order of Friars Preachers. St. Dominic founded the Order of Friars Preachers for the Preaching of the Gospel for the salvation of souls. I knew this when I entered, but I learned exactly what that meant as the years progressed. It has not been an easy life in any sense, but it has been a life that I love and I thank God every day that I received a vocation to religious life and the priesthood. How blessed we are to receive a two-fold blessing: consecrated life and the priesthood!

I would like to describe to you three critical components of Dominican Preaching. There are many components to Dominican Preaching, but I am just going to focus on three that I feel are most important. First and most important, the journey of preaching begins in one’s own soul. Second, I will speak to you about how Dominican Preaching flows from our Common Life together, the life that we live in community. And third, that Dominican Preaching is about imparting knowledge that leads to true wisdom.

This column will continue next weekend with the first component of Dominican Preaching.

A blessed week to all,

Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.Pastor/Prior

Baptism Ministry is Seeking Volunteer CouplesAre you looking for a way to become more involved with our parish and meet new families? Baptism ministry couples are needed to assist the Priest or deacon at Sunday Baptisms after the 12:30 Mass and to help teach the Baptism class that is held the first Sunday of the month. Typically, a couple will volunteer one Sunday for 11⁄2 hours every 2-3 months. This ministry is a great opportunity to support new parents in their role as spiritual leaders in their home and a small way to return some of the blessings our parish has given to us. We are especially in need of couples to serve at the Baptism ceremony. If interested in learning more, please contact Mary Clare Peck at 513-871-2309.

Calling all Ladies of CharityThere will be an organizational meeting on Saturday, September 21st at 10:00 a.m. in the St. Joseph Room.

There is much to discuss as we plan the end of 2019 and our 2020 activities for the Ladies of Charity organization. Please join us. Invite a friend. We provide some much needed love, support and money to so many families. Any woman who is 18 years or older and is a practicing Catholic is welcome to join or just come and find out what we are all about.

If you need more information, please contact Jean Wilkinson at 513-498-5085.

HOLY TEACHING

The old has passed away, all things are made newSt. Andrew of Crete, Discourse on the Nativity of the Blessed VirginThe fulfillment of the law is Christ Himself, which does not as much lead us away from the letter as lift us up to its spirit. For the law’s consummation was this, that the very lawgiver accomplished His work and changed letter into spirit, summing up everything in Himself and, though subject to the law, living by grace. He subordinated the law, yet harmoniously united grace with it, not confusing the distinctive characteristic of the one with the other, but effecting the transition in a way most fitting for God. He changed whatever was burdensome, servile and oppressive into what is light and liberating, so that we should be enslaved no longer under the elemental spirits of the world, as the Apostle says, nor held fast as bondservants under the letter of the law.

This is the highest, all embracing benefit that Christ has bestowed on us. This is the revelation of the mystery, this is the emptying out of the divine nature, the union of God and man, and the deification of the manhood that was assumed. This radiant and manifest coming of God to men most certainly needed a joyful prelude to introduce the great gift of salvation to us. The present festival, the birth of the Mother of God, is the prelude, while the final act is the foreordained union of the Word with flesh. Today the Virgin is born, tended and formed, and prepared for her role as Mother of God, who is the universal king of the ages.

Justly then do we celebrate this mystery since it signified for us a double grace. We are led toward the truth, and we are led away from our condition of slavery to the letter of the law. How can this be? Darkness yields before the coming of light, and grace exchanges legalism for freedom. But midway between the two stands today’s mystery, at the frontier where types and symbols give way to reality, and the old is replaced by the new.

Therefore, let all creation sing and dance and unite to make worthy contribution to the celebration of this day. Let there be one common festival for saints in heaven and men on earth. Let everything, mundane things and those above, join in festive celebration. Today this created world is raised to the dignity of a holy place for Him who made all things. The creature is newly prepared to be a dwelling place for the Creator.
