GOOD NEWSEzekiel 33:7+ I Romans r3:8+o / Matthew r8:r5-zo
One of my favorite retreat exercises is to ask participants to think of a mottothat could guide them for the rest of their lives. What fragment of a prayer,
scriptural text, or saint quotation would let people know how you want tolive your life?
lf nothing comes to mind, I give them Bibles and invite them to skim theepistles and Gospels for possibilities, reminding them that this is their mottofortoday and that they can change it tomorrow.
Once they have their mottoes, I ask them to reflect on what it would look
like if they lived with the motto always on their mind. The exercise helps
focus people on whatthey do well and on what needs a little work.
Over the years, l've returned frequently to the beginning of the epistle:
"Owe nothing to anyone, except to love one another." I remember when l've
done that well and when, driven by anger, fear, or ego, l've fallen far short ofthe ideal. lt has always appealed to me as a wonderful motto.
Today, however, l'm struck by the second half of this reading: "lt i5 the
hour now for you to wake from sleep...Put on the Lord Jesus Christ."
I think there are many times when we're asleep and unaware of how we
hurt others by what we say and do. What if we saw everything as Christ did,
touched everyone as Christ touched them? lf we put on Christ, we wouldn'tneed to tell people which words we hope will guide us. We'd simply become
the living example of them. Mary Katharine Deeley sun daybulleti n @ li guori. arg

d e ar PAD Rf,
What doa the Church teach about tattoos, body piercing, and shnping?
I'm a bit squeamishwLrcn I see a picrci.ng in a plnce otlwr tlnn afl. ear,
and uhen I see a tattoo cauuing a large part of a pmon's body Iwonder wlmt tlrcy'll think about that tattoo in h,uenty yean. But tfuse
things are a matter of taste;for exalrrple, I don't think tfure is anything
wrofigwi.th earrings, but others might.
The Church has no teaching on tattoos, piercing, orshaping (when a body part is purposely reshaped to fit a
cultural ideal). Leviticus 19 says, "Do not lacerate yourbodies for the dead, and do not tattoo yourselves,"clearly outlawing piercings and tattoos (28). But it also
says, "Do not...spoil the edges of your beard" (27). Ibroke that law this morningwhen I shaved.
In their introduction to the Book of Leviticus in the Ner.u
Ameican Bible, revised editiori, the bishops teach that the
laws in this book are "not merely legislative." They were
designed to instill "a-wty of life in the books hearers and
readers" (usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bible/#Leviticus).'We may not have the same obligation to adhere to those
rules, but it is important for Catholics to remember 1
Corinthians 3:16: "You are the temple of God." 'We
should do nothing to deface the temple of God. So ifyoudo get a piercing or a tattoo, never forget that you'reGod's temple.
