Annual Blessing of the Pets

Honoring St. Francis of Assisi.

Saturday, October 4 at 11:00 am.

Many of us have shared companionship with a

well-loved pet and so we understand the emo-tional ties that can bind us together with our

pets. Francis of Assisi went beyond that and celebrated and honored all of God's creation,

recognizing that we share kinship with not only

humans and animals but also with the very uni-verse we inhabit as co-creations of a loving

God.

Stewardship of Faith Our prayerful response to God’s blessings! Sun, September 28—Twenty-Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time Ez 18:25-28 Ps 125 Mt 21:28-32 Jesus was obedient to the Father, even to the death on a cross. We need never fear if we turn away from the path of virtue for the Lord is ever ready to forgive us, if we but repent. Remember, the Lord’s compassion and kindness from of old. Mon, September 29— Sts. Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, Archangels Dn 7:9-10, 13-14 Ps 138 Jn 1:47-51 Let us join the countless hosts of angels in singing the praises of the Lord and of his victory over sin and death. They are God’s faithful ministers. Tues, September 30— St. Jerome, priest, doctor of the Church Jb 3:1-3, 11-17, 20-23 Ps 88 Lk 9:51-56 Job cries out to the Lord, cursing the day of his birth. Jesus is patient with those who do not accept him. Wed, October 1— St. Therese of the Child Jesus, virgin, doctor of the Church Jb 9:1-12, 14-16 Ps 88 Lk 9:57-62 How can a mere mortal bring proceedings against an all-knowing God whose faithfulness is from of old? Jesus speaks of the demands of discipleship. Thurs, October 2— The Holy Guardian Angels Jb 19:21-27 Ps 27 Mt 18:1-5, 10 Job longs to see God in the land of the living. Even the lowliest among us is precious in God’s sight. Fri, October 3— Weekday Jb 38:1, 12-21, 40:3-5 Ps 139 Lk 10:13-16 The Lord is ever with us. His ways are beyond our understanding. Not all will accept the good news. Sat, October 4— St. Francis of Assisi, religious Jb 42:1-3, 5-6, 12-17 Ps 119 Lk 10:17-24 Job acknowledged his limited understanding when compared to God’s eternal wisdom. The mystery of the Father’s love is revealed to the disciples. Sun, October 5—Twenty-Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time Is 5:1-7 Ps 80 Phil 4:6-9 Mt 21:33-43 The vineyard of the Lord is the house of Israel. At vintage time, the master will return to receive the harvest. May we bear fruit in plenty, and be pleasing in his sight by living lives that are marked by love and respect.

COMMUNITY CATECHESIS It’s not enough to merely say you believe.

You must also live your faith. Twenty-sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Week of September 28, 2014

Listen to the Word (Matthew 21:28-32) When you hear the story of the two sons, what about it touches your heart? What image lingers in your memory from this reading?

Look into your life Question for children: How do you show your love for Jesus by doing what he asks, even when it is difficult for you? Question for youth: This reading of the Gospel is about young people. With which son can you identify yourself more and why? Question for adults: How and when were you like each of the sons in the Gospel?

Activities for the week Take these activities to further reflect:

To focus on how faith is lived in your family, brainstorm Christian actions and list them on a poster board. Place the poster in a promi-nent area of the house for all to see. Have the family place a sticker next to each action as they demonstrate it during the week.

Each day for family prayer this week, pray the "Prayer of St. Francis."

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. Where there is hatred, let me sow love. Where there is injury, pardon. Where there is doubt, faith. Where there is despair, hope. Where there is darkness, light. Where there is sadness, joy. Lord, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love. For it is in giving that we receive; it is in pardoning that we are pardoned; it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Look through the newspaper this week to find stories about people who actively live their faith.

Discuss a problem that is not being addressed that needs an im-mediate solution. This can be something at home or in the communi-ty. Talk about possible solutions. Pick out one thing that you can do this week. Decide on a time when you will do it together.

TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

The first son in today’s Gospel said he would

do his father’s bidding, but did not. The second

son balked at first, but then repented and did as

he was asked. What service is God calling me

to do? Which son am I more like?

¿Qué me

esta pidiendo Dios que yo haga? ¿A cuál hijo me

parezco más yo?
