Pastor’s Letter

October 1/2

Dear Parish Family,

Fr. Ed Kiernan, a senior priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, who celebrated mass here almost every weekend, died on September 24. Fr. Ed was a wonderfully kind and compassionate man who had a special gift of preaching. Those who attended his mass each week often spoke to me of how his insight into the gospel helped them on their own spiritual journey. When he was hospitalized last May, Fr. Ed joked with me that he was sorry he did not get to give his homily that week because, in his words, “It was a good one!”

Fortunately he wrote out all his homilies by hand and our office staff typed them up and enlarged the print so it would be easy for him to read. I can think of no greater tribute to his memory that to offer to you his last homily. As you will see—it was indeed a good one!

Homily of Fr. Edward J Kiernan, May 1, 2016, The 6th Sunday of Easter In our Catholic vocabulary, we have a number of momentous monosyllables. Deceptively simple monosyllables…God, Christ, church; faith, hope, love; prayer, cross, hell. They leave our lips so easily, yet each is chock full of meaning, of mystery.

Another of those monosyllables meets us in today’s Gospel. During his last discourse Jesus tells his disciples: “Peace I leave you.” Peace. What could be simpler? Any ninny knows what peace is. Actually, not so simple at all—not the peace of Christ—and so, a question: What ought the word “peace” say to us?

In the first place, it should challenge our Christian intelligence. What meaning above all others does “peace” have for you? It will vary, of course; for a soldier, peace is the absence of war; for a mother, a child asleep; if you live in Southampton, peace might be soft sand bathed in moonlight, the end of a tough day, feet up and a chilled Michelob; if you hurt, peace is an hour without pain.

Now each of these is indeed a facet of peace. But do you sense that the peace Christ left you is deeper than any of these, a peace the world cannot give, that it is the presence of God within you, all around you, a communion with Trinity that draws you into divine life, a sharing in the life of God’s very own Son? Peace is your communion with God. You have been reconciled to Him through Christ. You are one with Him in love.

Let me ask a question: What wars have you ended in your backyard or your bedroom? What mines of envy or hate, of discord or dislike, have you defused? Who hurts less because you love more? Who hurts more because you love less? Who was depressed but has come alive at your touch? Is anyone free to laugh because you have swallowed your pride? Who is hungry for food or affection and is fed by your faith? Who thirsts for justice and feels more human because you are there? Who experiences God’s absence and finds the image of God on your face? My friends, this ‘world’ of which John speaks is ultimately smallness and sin—and so, we are part of the world that has to be overcome. You overcome it only as Jesus did: by touching to it the peace Christ has left to you, the communion with God that has made you a new creature.

Do you want to feel the peace of Christ, glow with it? Then share it, give it away. My brothers and sisters in Christ, in a few moments you will wish one another peace. I do not ask you to renounce whatever blessings peace means for you. By all means, wish

A Last Homily

Page 5: Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016 · 02/10/2016  · Twenty-seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time October 2, 2016 The Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus

one another freedom from terrorism without anxiety within. Wish one another harmony and health. Pray indeed that in every way they may fare well. But over and above all these good things, realize what it is that a Christian nourished on Scripture wishes another Christian when you say, “peace”. With all my heart, I wish you, and pray for you, the salvation God took flesh to bring, the redemption from sin Christ bought with His blood. I wish you the grace of God that is the beginning of glory, that is eternal life here and now. I wish you deeper and deeper oneness with God. I pray that you will feel it, that the presence of Christ will make your ‘spirit spin’, your ‘bones to quake’, your ‘blood run thin’, your ‘flesh to melt inside your skin’, your ‘very pulse create a din’, --aware ‘that Heaven is not up but in’.

I am grateful for the gift of Father Ed’s priesthood. Grateful, too, for all of you who helped him to exercise that gift these past years. Celebrating mass each week was challenging for him but your patience, your kindness, and your understanding allowed him the dignity of continuing his ministry. Thank you, too, for all who came to his wake and funeral mass this week. You were a wonderful support to his friends and family, especially to Sister Emily Massey and Sister Christine Sammons who cared for him with such great kindness.

May he rest in peace!

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Rev. Michael A. Vetrano Pastor

Faith and Justice

The lament of Habakkuk in Sunday’s first reading could have been written today: “How long, O God? I cry for help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not intervene.” But is it God who does not intervene or we who do not listen? Do we not hear the rest of the reading: “For the vision still has its time, presses on to fulfillment, and will not disappoint; if it delays, wait for it, it will surely come, it will not be late.… the just one, because of faith, shall live”? Ah! There’s the catch, “because of faith.” Jesus tells us, “If you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you would say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.” Could it be our faith is even smaller than a tiny mustard seed? How many think peace is not possible? How many have faith to believe it is and are willing to work for it? Sunday’s second reading from 2 Timothy tells us: “For God did not give us a spirit of cowardice but rather of power and love and self-control.” Do we believe?
