PASTOR’S CORNER

We know that the number 666 means trouble. It shows up in the Apocalypse, the last book of the Bible in chapter 13, where beasts are rising up out of the sea and the earth in rebellion against God. Chapter 14 describes the victorious lamb with those who follow him, but prior to that introduction John at the end of 13 presents the number 666 as a code allowing commerce and engagement with the beast, rebellion against God. Even as through the centuries there has been investigation into what this number of the beast means, in our Sunday reading today we have another intriguing encounter with this number. Since we’re arriving at the end of John, chapter 6, and John 6 is a very long chapter, we read from the verse today of John 6:66. And what does that verse say, at the end of Jesus’ long presentation of his gift of himself to us in his body and blood, his sharing heavenly life with those who will receive him? John 6:66 reads: “As a result of this, many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.” Since the enumeration of chapters and verses happened centuries after the Scriptures were written, we can see this coincidence and being exactly that, a coincidence. But nevertheless, it’s striking that just as this number in Revelation signifies rebellion against God, here in John it describes rejection of God’s gift. Each Sunday, Jesus wants to share his body and blood with us. The world and the sea, and the beasts that rise from them, give us an attractive option of rejecting God’s gift from heaven. But unlike those of John 6:66, who reject Jesus’ teaching on eating his body and blood, we can say with Peter, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.”

Please keep the following people in your prayers this week: For those suffering illnesses, infirmity, and those in need of our prayers.

PRAYER

We know, Lord, that your words are spirit and life. Amidst the confusion of the world and the distractions of suffering, help us to remember that only You have the words of everlasting life.

In a world full of choices that clamor for our favor, help us make the right choice. Help us choose You, always.

Role of Catholics in Society Question: We live in a country that upholds the separation of Church and state. What is the role of Catholics in society? Answer: The role of the Church in the world has taken different forms over time, but the theme is the same. Be disciples in it! As the lay faithful — that is, not vowed priest or religious — we are called to live and love in the circumstances of our daily lives. St. John Paul II wrote a document about the laity. In it he wrote, “In their situation in the world God manifests His plan and communicates to them their particular vocation of seeking the Kingdom of God by engaging in temporal affairs and by ordering them according to the plan of God” (On the Lay Members of Christ’s Faithful, 15). God wants us in the hospitals, the board rooms, the law offices, the food pantries, and the little league games! We are to engage in the affairs of the world. But when we’re there, we should live the plan of God. We need to respect those around us, engage in just business and legal practices, and love our children. We should care for the earth, use our money wisely, and get to know our neighbors. We must advocate for social policies that respect human dignity and human freedom. No matter our state in life, we are invited to build the kingdom of God! ©LPi

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP - RECOGNIZE GOD IN YOUR ORDINARY MOMENTS Submission as Stewardship. We aren’t comfortable with the idea of submission. Our society champions equality, and rightly so — but it’s a mistake to think that submission is at odds with equality. To submit ourselves fully, we must first be free. We must first be our own masters. God has granted us that freedom with the salvation He offers. We are no longer the slaves of sin. Now He asks us to be subordinate to one another, in the name of Christ. What a completely uncomfortable task! What He’s asking is for us to be subordinate to the person who irritates us the most. The person we really can’t stand. The person who doesn’t respect us or appreciate what we have to offer. The person we think we’re smarter than, more talented than. The person we envy. That’s the real challenge of stewardship, isn’t it? Subordination. Inconveniencing myself by giving of time, of money, of relationship. Putting the needs or wants of another above my own when they haven’t done anything special to earn it. I invite you to consider the cross — the most radical expression of submission, and of stewardship, that ever existed. If there was ever someone who deserved superiority, isn’t it the God who let Himself be nailed to a tree, who gave so freely of His life, His body, His blood, His everything? To look at him in his agony is to truly understand the beauty of submission — of laying down what you have for the good of the other. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi

Incomodándome a mí mismo dando tiempo, dinero, relaciones. - Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS © LPi

THE GOD OF CHOICES For Sunday, August 22, 2021 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time

Simon Peter answered him, “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” If you have ever read a book on parenting, you know the power inherent in presenting choices to a child. No matter the method or style, most childrearing gurus worth their salt will tell you that raising kids is all about helping them handle choices. Their life, after all, will surely be full of important ones, large and small, and the parent who seeks to shelter a child from making his own choices is living in denial of that inevitable future. Our God is no different. He is the ultimate father — which is precisely what sets Him apart from false deities. God lets us choose Him. He does not trick us. He does not lie in wait. He does not blackmail or entrap us. He has all the strength in the universe, but He does not use an ounce of it to force us to do anything. His authority over us is the kind that never chafes, because it is entirely divorced from the concept of power. The choice to obey is ours. In fact, at the single most important moment of salvation history — the Incarnation — He even gave the Blessed Mother a choice. The salvation of humanity hung upon the decision of a teenage girl

to obey the will of God, but still, He did not force it upon her. He gave her a choice. Ironically, it is the devil who doesn’t seem to want to give us a choice — probably because he knows that if we had a choice, a real and fair choice, we would never decide to be separated from the love of our Creator, the only One in whom our restless hearts can ever find rest. It is the devil who wins souls through deceit and coercion, who preys on feelings of desperation, isolation, and confusion. In today’s Gospel, we see many of Jesus’ disciples reject him because they could neither understand nor accept the teaching about eating his flesh and drinking his blood. Instead of mocking, chastising, or berating them, Jesus instead shows gentleness, and asks his remaining disciples if they, too, wish to leave. There was a time in my life when I thought that perhaps I would be happier without religion. I was plagued by doubts. I was tired of fighting them, and tired of this idea that because I submitted to religion, I was not “making my own choices.” I wanted to be the one in charge. I wanted to be the head of my own destiny. I didn’t want to rely on this God I wasn’t sure I could trust. I wasn’t sure I liked or understood the rules He had and thought I might be the first human in history to figure out some better ones. But in the end, I realized that by believing in God and following His laws, I had indeed been making my own choices. I had never been enslaved — quite the opposite, I had been exercising my free will. Christ had been asking me all along, the same as he did with Simon Peter: “Do you also want to leave?” And the message I heard coming from deep within myself was the same one that sprang from the lips of Simon Peter in response to Christ: “Master, to whom shall I go? Only you have the words of eternal life.” Colleen Jurkiewicz Dorman
