Few Are Chosen What’s the first thing you do when you get invited to a wedding or a party? The first thing I do is to check the date to make sure I am able to attend. Next, I reply to the invitation. This is the only polite thing to do. People have to be able to plan for the number of guest who will be able to attend. (It  is really difficult when the response date has passed and people haven’t  let you know  if they will be attending or not.  I hate it when I have to call people to see if they will be coming.)  When I am invited to a special celebration, after I have responded, the next thing I do is plan what I will wear.  I  enjoy  looking  through my  closest  to  find  just  the  right  dress.  I  enjoy  dressing  up  for  special occasions. Dressing appropriately is a sign of respect to the host or hostess. I would not wear an elegant dress to a BBQ, nor would I wear shorts and flip flops to a formal affair.  We had an experience  in my  family when a bride and groom guaranteed 100 people  for the reception.  Only 80 people responded that they would attend. The food was paid for already, so the bride told her younger brother to invite some of his friends to come and enjoy the celebration. They came and had fun and the food wasn’t wasted.  The king in today’s parable had a similar situation. He invited people to a wedding feast for his son. When everything was prepared he instructed his servants to gather the guests. Many refused to come. (Some guests even  treated  the servants cruelly.) The king wanted  the banquet  room filled with people so he instructed his servants to go and gather all you can find to come to the feast.  In Jesus’ parable many guests filled the wedding feast and the king was happy, until he spotted a guest without a wedding garment. The king threw him out  into the darkness with his hands and  feet bound. This sounds rather harsh until we dig deeper into Jesus’ message.  

As baptized Catholics we have  all been  invited  to  the heavenly banquet. We were  clothed  in  a white 

garment on the day of our baptism. This is the garment we need to be properly dressed for the heavenly 

banquet. It is our responsibility to keep that garment clean. (Mine gets dirty when I do not live up to my 

baptismal call and promise.) God loves us so much that we have been given a way to clean our baptismal 

white garments.  The Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession) is our washing machine! When we follow 

the washing  directions  by  celebrating  the  Sacrament,  our  garments  are  as  clean  as when  they were 

washed in the blood of the lamb.   I have been invited through baptism. I want to be sure that I am also 

chosen and will be ready to accept the invitation properly dressed.

Pocos Son Elegidos ¿Qué es lo primero que haces cuando te invitan a una boda o una fiesta? Lo primero que hago es verificar la fecha para asegurarme de que puedo asistir. A continuación, respondo a la invitación. Esto es lo único cortés que  se puede  hacer.  Las personas deben poder planificar  la  cantidad de  invitados que podrán asistir. (Es realmente difícil cuando la fecha de respuesta ha pasado y la gente no te ha dicho si asistirán o no. Odio cuando tengo que llamar a la gente para ver si van a asistir).  

Cuando me  invitan a una celebración especial, después de haber  respondido,  lo siguiente que hago es planificar  lo  que  me  pondré.  Disfruto  mirar  mi  closet  para  encontrar  el  vestido  adecuado.  Disfruto vestirme para ocasiones especiales. Vestirse apropiadamente es una señal de respeto hacia el anfitrión o la anfitriona. No usaría un vestido elegante para una parrillada, ni usaría shorts y sandalias para un evento formal.  

Tuvimos una experiencia en mi  familia cuando  los novios garantizaron  100 personas para  la  recepción. Solo 80 personas respondieron que asistirían. La comida ya estaba pagada, por lo que la novia le dijo a su hermano  menor  que  invitara  a  algunos  de  sus  amigos  a  disfrutar  de  la  celebración.  Vinieron  y  se divirtieron y la comida no se desperdició.  

El rey de la parábola de hoy tuvo una situación similar. Invitó a la gente a una fiesta de bodas para su hijo. Cuando todo estuvo preparado, ordenó a sus sirvientes que reunieran a los invitados. Muchos se negaron a venir.  (Algunos  invitados  incluso  trataron  a  los  sirvientes  con  crueldad). El  rey quería que  la  sala de banquetes se  llenara de gente, por  lo que  les  indicó a sus sirvientes que fueran y reunieran todo  lo que pudieran encontrar para asistir al banquete.  

En la parábola de Jesús, muchos invitados llenaron el banquete de bodas y el rey estaba feliz, hasta que vio a un  invitado sin traje de boda. El rey  lo arrojó hacia  la oscuridad con sus manos y pies atados. Esto suena bastante duro hasta que profundizamos en el mensaje de Jesús.  

Como  católicos bautizados,  todos hemos  sido  invitados al banquete  celestial. Estábamos vestidos  con una  túnica  blanca  el  día  de  nuestro  bautismo.  Esta  es  la  prenda  que  necesitamos  para  vestirnos adecuadamente para el banquete celestial. Es nuestra  responsabilidad mantener  limpia esa prenda.  (El mío se ensucia cuando no cumplo con mi llamado y promesa bautismal.) Dios nos ama tanto que se nos ha  dado  una  manera  de  limpiar  nuestras  vestiduras  blancas  bautismales.  ¡El  Sacramento  de  la Reconciliación (Confesión) es nuestra lavadora! Cuando seguimos las  instrucciones de lavado al celebrar la Santa Cena, nuestras prendas están tan limpias como cuando fueron lavadas con la sangre del cordero. Me han invitado a través del bautismo. Quiero estar seguro de que yo también soy elegido y estaré listo para aceptar la invitación vestido correctamente.

On October 18, we join with the universal Church to celebrate World Mission Sunday. Amid a global pandemic that continues to impact people of all walks of life, we as a faith community come together in prayer and solidarity to actively participate in the mission of Jesus Christ. That mission calls us out of ourselves, to love God and our neighbor. The annual World Mission Sunday second collection, for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith, provides critical support to communities of faith in the most economically disadvantaged regions of our world. Working with limited means, these local churches bear witness to the Gospel amid poverty and turmoil, addressing all forms of material and spiritual need. This collection serves: �� Approximately 75 percent supports efforts of

the Society for the Propagation of the Faith to help sustain over 1,000 mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Pacific Islands.

�� Nearly 10 percent supports the work of the

Catholic Near East Welfare Association to alleviate poverty, foster Christian unity and promote interreligious dialogue in the Middle East, Northeast Africa, India and Eastern Europe.

�� About 15 percent supports the operations of the

Mission Office of the Archdiocese of Chicago, which builds bridges of love and support between global missionaries and members of the Church in Chicago.

In his message for World Mission Sunday this year, Pope Francis states, “The impossibility of gathering as a Church to celebrate the Eucharist has led us to share the experience of the many Christian communities that cannot celebrate Mass every Sunday.” Let this celebration draw us even closer to our brothers and sisters as we accompany them in this unique point in history.
