¡ Mujer, grande es tu fe ! MATEO 15:28

WHY PRAY? The “foreigners” as Isaiah calls them, the “Gentiles” as Paul calls them, or the “Canaanites” as Matthew calls them are called to worship the one true God in prayer. As we listen to today’s readings, perhaps we are tempted to ask: Why pray? The ques-tion is rhetorical; it is tantamount to asking why should friends talk to one another or people in love kiss one another. Prayer is a way of relating to God, a way of talking to God. The apostles had the opportunity to talk to Jesus in the flesh. We have the opportunity to talk to Jesus Christ in prayer. Our relationship with him must be enthusiastic; it cannot be faint-hearted. John Donne, a fifteenth-century poet, knew what the qualities of good prayer were. Donne asks God to treat him differently from most Christians. The poet does not want God to merely “knock, breathe, shine, and seek to mend,” but also to “break, blow, burn, and make me new” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). It takes a dynamic faith on our part to come to God in prayer. As Jesus once said, “Knock and the door will be opened to you” (Matthew 7:7). It may take pounding the door down, but if we are as persistent as the woman in today’s Gospel, the results will follow. ¿POR QUÉ REZAR? Los “extranjeros” que Isaías menciona, los “gentiles” de que habla Pablo, o los “cananeos” que cita Mateo son llamados a adorar en oración al verdadero Dios. Al escuchar las lecturas de hoy, tal vez nos sintamos tentados a preguntarnos: ¿Por qué rezar? Es una pregunta retórica; se equipara a preguntar por qué han de hablarse los amigos o los enamorados besarse. Rezar es una manera de relacionarnos con Dios, una manera de hablarle. Los apóstoles tuvieron la oportunidad de conversar en persona con Jesús encarnado. Nosotros tenemos la oportunidad de hablar con Dios en la oración. Nuestra relación con él debe ser entusiasta; no puede ser pusilánime. John Donne, un poeta y sacerdote inglés del siglo XV, supo cuáles eran la cualidades de una buena oración. Donne le pide a Dios que lo trate de manera diferente que a la mayoría de los cristianos. El poeta no quiere que Dios meramente “golpee, aliente, brille y repare”, sino que también “rompa, sople, queme y me haga nuevo” (Holy Sonnets, XIV). This woman’s inner strength, which enables her to overcome every obstacle, is to be found in her maternal love and in her faith that Jesus can grant her request. This makes me think of the strength of women. With their strength they are able to obtain great things. We have known many [such women]! We could say that it is love that stirs faith, and faith, for its part, becomes love’s reward. Heartrending love for her daughter causes the woman to cry: “Have mercy on me, O Lord, Son of David” (v. 22). And her untiring faith in Jesus allows her not to become discouraged even in the face of his initial rejection; thus the woman “knelt before him, saying, ‘Lord, help me’” (v. 25). In the end, before such persistence, Jesus was in awe, nearly astonished, by the faith of a pagan woman. Therefore he acquiesces, saying: “‘O woman, great is your faith! Be it done for you as you desire.’ And her daughter was healed instantly”. Jesus points to this humble woman as a model of unwavering faith. Her persistence in beseeching Christ’s intervention is incen-tive for us not to become discouraged, not to despair when we are burdened by life’s difficult trials. The Lord does not turn away in the face of our needs and, if at times he seems insensitive to our requests for help, it is in order to put to the test and to strengthen our faith. We must continue to cry out like this woman: “Lord, help me! Lord, help me!”. In this way, with persever-ance and courage. This is the courage needed in prayer. This Gospel episode helps us to under-stand that we all need to grow in faith and fortify our trust in Jesus. He can help us to find our way, when we have lost the compass of our journey; when the road no longer seems flat but rough and arduous; when it is hard to be faithful to our commitments. It is important to nourish our faith every day, by carefully listening to the Word of God, with the celebration of the Sacraments, with personal prayer as a “cry” to him — “Lord, help me!” — and with concrete acts of charity toward our neighbor.

El Señor, en un primer momento, parece no escuchar este grito de dolor, hasta el punto de suscitar la intervención de los discípulos que interceden por ella. El apa-rente distanciamiento de Jesús no desanima a esta madre, que insiste en su invocación. La fuerza interior de esta mujer, que permite superar todo obstáculo, hay que buscarla en su amor materno y en la confianza de que Jesús puede satisfacer su petición. Y esto me hace pensar en la fuerza de las mujeres. Con su fortaleza son capaces de obtener cosas grandes. ¡Hemos conocido muchas! Podemos decir que es el amor lo que mueve la fe y la fe, por su parte, se convierte en el premio del amor. El amor conmovedor por la propia hija la induce «a gritar: “¡Ten piedad de mí, Señor, hijo de David!”» (v. 22). Y la fe perseverante en Jesús le consiente no desanimarse ni siquiera ante su inicial rechazo; así la mujer «vino a postrarse ante Él y le dijo: “¡Señor, socórreme!”» (v. 25). Al final, ante tanta perseverancia, Jesús permanece admirado, casi estupefacto, por la fe de una mujer pagana. Por tanto, accede diciendo: «“Mujer, grande es tu fe; que te suceda como deseas”. Y desde aquel momento quedó curada su hija». Esta humilde mujer es indicada por Jesús como ejemplo de fe inquebrantable. Su insistencia en invocar la intervención de Cristo es para nosotros estímulo para no desanimarnos, para no desesperar cuando estamos oprimi-dos por las duras pruebas de la vida. El Señor no se da la vuelta ante nuestras necesidades y, si a veces parece insensible a peticiones de ayuda, es para poner a prueba y robustecer nuestra fe. Nosotros debemos continuar gritando como esta mujer: «¡Señor, ayúdame! ¡Señor ayúda-me!». Así, con perseverancia y valor. Y esto es el valor que se necesita en la oración. Este episodio evangélico nos ayuda a entender que todos tenemos necesidad de crecer en la fe y fortalecer nuestra confianza en Jesús. Él puede ayudarnos a encontrar la vía cuando hemos perdido la brújula de nuestro camino; cuando el camino no parece ya plano sino áspero y arduo; cuando es fatigoso ser fieles con nuestros compromisos. Es importante alimentar cada día nuestra fe, con la escucha atenta de la Palabra de Dios, con la celebración de los Sacramentos, con la oración personal como «grito» hacia Él —«Señor, ayúdame»—, y con actitudes concretas de caridad hacia el prójimo.

Anniversary of Ordination Please join us in celebrating Father Eugene Azorji’s 40th Anniversary of his Ordination to Priesthood on Sunday, August 23rd. Due to COVID-19, we are unable to celebrate this special occasion as it deserves. Father Eugene will officiate the 11:30 am and 2 pm Masses that day. We will do our best to accommodate as many attendees as possible, always following social distancing guidelines and ensuring your safety. We really hope you can join us! Father will also be greeting parishioners who wish to congratulate him from 1 pm — 4 pm in St.Rose’s Hall. It will mean very much to us and to Father Eugene if you can attend. If you are considering showing your appreciation to Father Eugene, he has a charity very close to his heart: The John Hafertepe’s Clinic in the Oboama Ezinihitte Village in Imo State, Nigeria. It would really mean a lot to Father Eugene for you to support this clinic that helps so many in that small community. These last few months have brought so much uncertain-ty to all of us in so many aspects of our lives, including the financial. For this reason, we are extremely grateful for those who have been able to continue their support throughout the suspension of Masses back on March 13th. For those who couldn’t, we are also grateful that you considered it, even if you were unable to. A HUGE THANK YOU! We want to share with you the contributions received (see below) these last few months, since Masses were suspended. The dollar amounts are less than one-half of our normal monthly collection amount and way below our break-even point. Under normal circumstances we constantly review and reduce expenses wherever it is possible, trying to always be good stewards of your offer-ings. At the present time even more. Unfortunately there are some expenses, such as electricity, that cannot be materially reduced. For example, our cost of electricity in summer is $3,500 to $4,500 per month. Our Lord leads our way, we are confident that together as a Parish, we will move forward and accomplish what-ever He has planned for us.

Por esta razón, estamos muy agradecidos con quienes han podido continuar su apoyo durante la suspensión de Misas desde el 13 de marzo. Con aquellos que no lo hicieron, también estamos agradecidos de que lo hayan considerado, aunque no pudieron hacerlo. ¡MUCHÍSIMAS GRACIAS! Queremos compartir con ustedes las contribu-ciones recibidas (ver abajo) de estos últimos meses, desde que las Misas fueron suspendidas. Los montos en dólares son menos de la mitad del montón mensual que se recibide normalmente y también muy por debajo de nuestro punto de equilibrio. En circunstancias normales, revisamos constantemente y reducimos los gastos en la me-dida de lo posible, tratando de ser siempre bue-nos administradores de sus ofrendas. En este mo-mento aún más. Desafortunadamente hay algunos gastos, como la electricidad, que no se pueden reducir materialmente. Por ejemplo, nuestro costo de electricidad en verano es de $3,500 a $4,500 por mes. Nuestro Señor nos guía, estamos seguros de que juntos, como Parroquia, avanzaremos y logra-remos lo que El tiene planeado para nosotros.
