Words from Fr. Ed

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day.

I write this as we are in the middle of a Eucharistic retreat with Fr. Augustine Valooran from Divine Mercy Re-treat Center in Kerala, India. What healing graces are raining down on souls! Most of our retreatants, however, are fromoutside the parish. Is this a sign that we are already sanctified and have no more need of healing? I doubt it. No, we all need healing, espe-cially those of us who don't realize our need for healing. Jesus speaks of our need to receive his Body and Blood, that this is requisite for going to heaven. Do we realize this need? Are wedeveloping a personal relationship with Jesus through the Holy Eucharist? This is Jesus' desire for you and I. He waits for us, yet too oftenwe ignore this inclination, this grace of invitation. Jesus speaks to a monk in the anonymous work, In Sinu Jesu:

Make no mistake about this: the renewal of My priesthood in the Church will proceed from a great return to the adoration ofMy real presence in this the Sacrament of My love. I will purify, heal, and mightily renew the priests who seek Me out in theSacrament of My love. To them I will show My Face. I will speak to their hearts and I will make known to them the secrets oflove that I hold within My Heart, and that I have reserved for them in these last days.

This work includes those laity and religious who feel drawn to pray for priests, coming close to the Blessed Sacrament for their own sakeand the sake of our whole Church. Isn't this making too much of the priesthood? Didn't Vatican II make priests equal to the laity? Sorry, trick question. Like the garden,Satan confuses through false premises. Vatican II did not seek to change the truth about priests or laity, it sought, instead, to clarify a rela-tionship that had grown askew. Priests are "equal" to the laity as Christians seeking salvation, but their ministerial role is different. It is not a

sin to have different roles in the Church. Some inter-pret this as an inequality. No, we each have our giftsof the Holy Spirit. I cannot do what you do. I am at theservice of your gifts. That is my gift. Jesus showedpriests how to serve through the washing of the feet.As we get this right, the Church comes alive, eachmember becoming "fully alive". Are you finding your gifts? Sit at the feet ofthe Master, Jesus Christ, in His Eucharistic Presence.Like Mary and Martha of Bethany you will learn whatthe "one thing necessary" is. (Lk 10:42) He will instructyou, heal you and transform you into the saint that on-ly you are called to be. Have confidence that the hostthat you receive at Mass is filling and inebriating yourbeing. Allow him permission to fill the other 167 hoursof the week with awareness of His Presence. Hecomes that we not be alone, that we live with His life.

Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood re-mains in me and I in him.
