First Reading : Jer 38:4-6. 8-10 A reading from the prophet Jeremiah

Responsorial Psalm: Lord, come to my aid!

Gospel Acclamation : Alleluia, alleluia! My sheep listen to my voice, says the Lord; I know them, and they follow me. Alleluia!

Jesus said to his disciples:

"I have come to set the earth on fire,

There is a baptism with which I must be baptized,

and how great is my anguish until it is accomplished!

Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth?

The Gospel of the Lord.

DID YOU KNOW? Points of interest and Catholic lore

† This text paints a different picture from the gentle, compassionate Jesus of popular

belief. It is just one example of Jesus displaying human emotion and passion for his cause.

† One of the symbols of the Holy Spirit is fire. At Pentecost, the Spirit came in the form of tongues of flame to the disciples in the upper room.

† The baptism that Jesus is still to experience is his death, his ‘baptism of fire’ or the persecution he undergoes because of his commitment to doing the will of the Father.

WELCOME! Our warmest welcome to all who celebrate with us, whether long time resident

or newly arrived in the Parish or a visitor. We thank God for you! If you are not on our Par-

ish list - please fill out a new parishioner card available from the Welcome Desk and hand it

back to them.
