Your Excettency the Gevernorm to my devoted wife who has

Waited lo these many hours and to my colleaques in the

Senate, I wish to thank, obviouslyv those ubo were kind

enougb to place my naae in nomination and second that nomina-

tion and thank mv colleaques on the Democratic side of the

aisle for again placing their faith and.trust in me and my

abilit#. This is mv fiftb opportunitv to shoulder this

responslbitity and I do not take lightly. I will again

assure vou all as members oe the Illinois Senate of my best

effort. I have a great deal of love and respect for this

institution and this Body and the people who serve in it.

And I wilt never do anything to bring an#thing but honor and

credit to al1 of us. We are ia tbis together. And as the

Governor indicated on...in his inaugural remarks, this is not

going to be a particularly easy time for the people that had

enough faith and confidence in us to send us hare to act on

their behalf. We have some very difficult daysm some diffi-

cult decisions to make. I am confident tbat the Illinois

Senate willm as it has in the pastv...îtsetf well. ând

again. I thank Mou, I am almost overwhelmed. This is really

reelected the President of tbe Illinois Senate. And 1 once

again pledge my cooperation and help. I think that most

people around the legislative process would have to say that

Senator Rock and with the other legislative leadersv try

to wark reasonable solutions to tougb problems. He may be of

the opposite part: but I think we*re of the same philisophv,

what*s gaod for the State of Illinois is good for the people,

a11 the people. So we will be here. we*ll be a stroogv loud

minorityv but when it gets down to solving problems you know

that weell be there and we4ll try to work things out. I#d

also Iike to thank mv leaders aod my members on this side of

the aisle for giving me the opportunity once again to serve

as your spokesman and vour leader. I appreciate that and Mou

know I will work hard at it, and hopefullv come around the

next election, maybe we will have two more on this side or

three more on this side and we once again will return this

Senate to where it should be@ Republican. also want to

conqratulate tbe three new Senators that I have on the other

side of tbe aisleoo.on our side of the aislem Senator

working with them. I know tbat you*ll learn to love and

sbip because we have so many deserving and well-quatiried

have served here, and I have been here sixteen vears, for all

of us who have served on both sides of the aisle for whatever

aaount of time, I think we ought to pay tribute to and

congratulate both Ken eright and Ed Fernandes for their vears

of devoted service te this institution and this process.

we thinkinq about maybe basketball, baseball, football? And

report back to the General Assembly.
