View From the CrowdBy TED MALICK
The past four seasons saw GuilfordCollege rise to football prominence in theCarolina Conference. A composite recordof 23 wins, 15 losses and one tie f \u25a0represents the best four-year record in the w
school's football history. Gone from this jfootball rebirth are head Coach JohnStewart and the record-breaking passingcombination of Bill Burchette and HenryMcKay among many others. I
But shed no tears for the Quakers, because on hand is exciting new headCoach Bob Lord, eighteen returninglettermen, several fine transfer students, and some of the mostpromising freshmen in the school's history.
Coach Lord calls the season "challenging in view of thetoughest schedule in recent years," but adds, "we are veryoptimistic and our boys have a fine spirit and willingness tohit." The 1968 edition of the Quakers will be exciting andtheir attitude is one which can't wait for Saturday's trip toLexington, Virginia and the Generals of Washington and LeeUniversity.

Quakers TravelBy Ted Malick opposition. Others who should
see action from the backfieldslots included junior Joe Dozierand Phil Jones and sophomoreDoug Gossman.
The offensive line depth is aquestion mark and at best willbe backed up by sophomores. Two lettermen guards return inReinhard Fisher and StamenOgilvie but behind them is noone with game experience. Thecenter position is bright withall-state senior Jay Clarkereturning, tackle is thin, but thereturn of 6'l", 220 lb. TomMulbnix, after a two year layoff, may help out.
Defensively the General haveto be improved. The entiredefensive secondary returnsheaded by Ken Freret,all-conference in 1967. Freret
.intercepted a school-record tenpasses during the seasonincluding four against SouthWestern College and threeagainst Hampden-Sydney. Thefront four average is also backand includes Ken Long, 204 lbs.,Britt McJunkin, John Harris andHank MacKenzie. Thelinebacking corps is headed bylittle All-American CandidateBob Wolf, a hard-nose veteran at5'11", 190 lbs.
Washington and Lee hasveterans at nearly every positionand barring injuries have to beconsidered as a good bet toimprove upon last season'srecord.
On the Quaker side new headCoach Bob Lord and his staff ofWilbur Johnson, John Lambeth,Terry Nelson, and Bill Martin, have 18 lettermen returning
from the 1967 squad whichcompiled a 6-4 overall record,3-4-1 within the Carolina'sConference.
Coach Lord has seen a fiercebattle being waged for theall-important number onequarterback spot which nowseems to be led by junior RayTavalaro, a 6'2", 180 pounderfrom Long Island, N.Y.
Senior Mike Bocuzzi is rightbehind Tavalaro. The remainingbackfield positions will probablybe staffed by Danny Wheeling,Larry Funkhouser and MikeHunt. Also due to see a greatdeal of action are sophs ColonCarter and Harold Allen andfreshman Tommy Peguese.
Across the line, ends BobSpain and Bob Miller, tackles PaulBarczy, and Doc Twiford, guards, Gil Lindsey and DennisCarroll and center Dick Arculinloom as the Guilford starters.
Arculin, Lindsey,Funkhouser, Carter, Spain, andCarroll may go both ways. Alsoon defense freshmen Pegueseand Ed Allen have beenoutstanding in practice andshould see some action. In thedefensive backfield Miller andHunt will be joined by veteranBuddy Smith and soph, JohnnyRoscoe.
Guilford is rebuilding but thespirit and desire is prevalent andthe Quakers hope to makeCoach Lord's debut a successfulone.
The Guilford-Washington andLee Football series is tied at 1-1.The Quakers will go for theseries victory number two at 2p.m. with the contest to be airedlocally on WCOG, 1320 radio.
It's the Washington and LeeUniversity Generals providingthe opposition as the GuilfordCollege Quakers travel toLexington, Virginia Saturdayafternoon for their 1968 openerand the Guilford debut of headcoach Bob Lord.
Lexington's Wilson Field isthe site for the non-conferencebattle as the Quakers seek arepeat of last season's 35-0triumph at Armfield AthleticCenter on the Guilford campus.
The Generals under new headCoach "Buck" Leslie will beseeking revenge for the lickinglast season and attempting torepeat the win over the Quakersof a few seasons ago atLexington.
Coach Leslie took over inAugust after the sudden death ofCoach Lee Laughlin. Leslie cancount 35 lettermen in his 72man roster and prospects of animproved season seem brighterindeed.
Washington and Lee,members of the Virginia CollegeAthletic Conference, posted a5-4 overall record in 1967.
Offensively, the Gens' attackis built around seniorquarterback Alan Tomlin.Tomlin is being hard-pressed byChuck Kuhn, a flashy junior.
The rest of the backfieldconsists of senior halfback LukeCrosland, senior fullback DickKinney and all-state flankerBucky Cunningham. The speedyCunningham caught 44 passeslast season and is expected todraw double coverage from the
