Prix de Lausanne 2012 40th international competition for young dancers

from January 29 to February 4, 2012, at the Beaulieu Theater in Lausanne

Lausanne, January 24, 2012: The Prix de Lausanne is celebrating its 40th anniversary. 40 years of excellence and passion in fostering the stars of tomorrow. Since 1973, the challenge launched by Philippe and Elvire Braunschweig, founders of the Prix de Lausanne, is met each winter with the same creative energy and artistic rigor. 79 candidates of 19 different nationalities were selected on the basis of the videos submitted by the 226 entrants and will be competing in Lausanne for a week. At the end of the selection round, on Friday, February 3rd, 20 candidates will have been chosen to perform in the finals on Saturday, February 4th. 8 of them will be leaving with a year-long scholarship to one of the 65 prestigious Prix de Lausanne partner schools and companies. The jury, composed of 9 personalities of the dance world, all prize winners of the Prix de Lausanne, will be presided by the Director and Choreographer of the Ballets of Monte-Carlo, Mr Jean-Christophe Maillot (prize winner 1977). In the finals, during the jury deliberations, the public will be able to admire three short performances danced by the students of the Royal Ballet School of London and the Royal Danish Ballet School of Copenhagen, both partner schools of the Prix de Lausanne. An exceptional Gala will take place on Sunday, February 5th, 2012, at 5 pm at the Beaulieu Theater with 25 artists, most of them prize winners of the Prix de Lausanne. The pas de deux will be danced by Principals of the Ballet of the National Opera of Paris, the Royal Ballet, and the Ballets of Monte-Carlo among others. The Prix de Lausanne wishes to celebrate this anniversary with the citizens of Lausanne and invites them to share key moments in the life of the competition. Some events are not to be missed: until March 1, an exhibition at the CHUV “The Prix de Lausanne through 40 years of posters”; a photo exhibit on the Grand-Pont “from shadow to light”; and a programme of dance films at the Swiss Cinematheque starting on February 13. And for the first time, the finals will be commented live on the web in 4 languages by four prize winners – on www.prixdelausanne-live.com . In addition to the finals, some of the competition activities are open to the public from Tuesday, January 31st to Thursday, February 2nd and all day Friday 3rd. Tickets are on sale at the entrance: 10 Swiss francs from Tuesday to Thursday, 20 Swiss francs on Friday. Children aged 7 to 15: free of charge (children under 7 not admitted).

Created in 1973, the Prix de Lausanne is an annual international competition for young dancers aged 15 to 18. Its goal is to discover, promote and support the world’s finest young talents. 65 of the world’s most prestigious dance schools and companies, such as the Royal Ballet School of London, the School of American Ballet in New York, and the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, are associated with the Prix de Lausanne and support its activities.

One of a kind, the Prix de Lausanne represents an exceptional platform for discovering youthful talents and is open to dance professionals who can observe and establish contacts with the candidates, thereby transforming Lausanne into the world’s capital for young dancers during the week of the competition.

40 years of excellence and passion serving the stars of tomorrow. Since 1973, the challenge launched by Philippe and Elvire Braunschweig, founders of the Prix de Lausanne, has been taken up each winter with the same creative energy and unfailing artistic rigour. The vocation of the international competition for young dancers aged 15 to 18 remains unchanged: discover the best young talents in the world and open the doors of the most prestigious dance schools and companies for them to realize their potential and become high level professional dancers. Over the years, by making Lausanne the annual meeting point of artists from all over the world who wish to see dance progress on an international level, the Prix de Lausanne has created a professional network that truly makes it a privileged platform. The desire to encourage the versatility of young dancers increases each year, as they must master classical as well as contemporary dance languages in order to rise to the challenges of their profession. The candidates also have the possibility to develop the expressive part of their performance during the various classes and coaching sessions over the week in Lausanne – truly a unique experience. The follow-up of these young artists also means promoting the completion of their academic degree – a career in dance is very short - and ensuring that strict health principles are in place. Both of these essential points guarantee the ethical reputation and holistic approach of the competition. The engagement of a permanent artistic director from March 1st, 2012 will enable the Prix de Lausanne to consolidate the development of its network and perpetuate its role as a key international platform. 1997

o 25th anniversary: workshop on the theme « What future for classical dance? » o Philippe Braunschweig steps down and hands over the presidency of the

foundation to Franz Blankart, the vice-presidency to Charles Gebhard and the artistic direction to Jan Nuyts.

1998 A mandate is given to young choreographers to create the compulsory contemporary variations.

1999

o Partnerships are made with ballet companies so that prize winners can follow a professional apprenticeship.

o The partner schools agree to ensure that the prize winners that choose them can complete their academic degrees.

o The candidates that are screened out during the week can follow classes during the competition and meet members of the jury for feedback.

2000 o Introduction of individual coaching: the candidates receive advice from a ballet

principal to improve the artistic interpretation of their variation. o Creation of the Prize for Contemporary Interpretation o A health check of the candidates is included in the registration procedures of

the competition.

2001 o Jan Nuyts steps down and transmits the artistic direction to Mavis Staines. o First live streaming of the finals on the Prix website.

2004

o Introduction of a new grading system to follow the evolution of the requirements of the dance profession.

o Creation of the networking forum: the non finalist candidates can take an audition class that is observed by persons from the partner schools and companies to – potentially – invite or hire certain of the candidates.

2005 Franz Blankart steps down and hands the presidency of the foundation to Charles Gebhard.

2006

In order to expand the scope of participants to the competition, the selection is now done by video submission.

2007

The age limit of the candidates is raised by one year (18 years and 11 months).

New Artistic Director: Amanda Bennett

Amanda Bennett was born in Texas, USA and received her training at the School of American Ballet in New York. In 1976 she joined the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève under the direction of Patricia Neary and the artistic direction of George Balanchine. From 1978 to 1989 she was Principal dancer with the Basel Ballet under the direction of Heinz Spoerli and during the 1990 season preformed with the Pennsylvania Ballet. Amanda Bennett has worked as guest teacher for many companies including The Feld Ballet N.Y. and Ballett Basel. From 1998 to 2000, she was ballet mistress for Ballet Freiburg Pretty Ugly. In July 2007 Amanda Bennett was a member of the jury for the McDonalds Performing Arts Challenge, Sydney Australia. Since her appointment by Richard Wherlock in 2000, she has been the Director of the Ballettschule Theater Basel.

Amanda Bennett will be the Artistic Director of the Prix de Lausanne as of March 1st, 2012.

Contemporary variations Cathy Marston and Didy Veldman

Specially created for the Prix de Lausanne, the contemporary choreographies from which candidates could choose are works by the two following young and already internationally renowned choreographers:

Cathy Marston Cathy Marston attended The Royal Ballet School where she won the Ursula Moreton Choreographic Competition (1994). She danced with the Zurich Ballet, Luzern Ballet and Bern Ballet. She performed a wide range of choreography including works by Balanchine, Hans Van Manen, Richard Wherlock and Stijn Celis. In 2000 she focused her attention on choreography, creating for companies such as the English National Ballet, Northern Ballet Theatre, the Washington Ballet, Danza Contemporanea de Cuba, Ballett Basel. She became the first Associate Artist of the Royal Opera House. In 2006 she formed her own company, The Cathy Marston Project. She was soon offered in 2007 the Directorship of the Bern Ballet, Switzerland. As House Choreographer she also commissioned works by Hofesh Shechter, Alexander Ekman, Guiherme Botelho and Karole Armitage.

Cathy Marston continues to work as a guest choreographer with companies such as Northern Ballet Theatre, the Ballet of the Opera House Graz and the Finnish National Ballet.

Didy Veldman Didy Veldman trained at the Scapino Academy in Amsterdam. She danced with the Scapino Ballet, the Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Rambert Dance Company. She started teaching in 2003 and has taught at the Royal Ballet School in London and the National Ballet Academy in Amsterdam, amongst others. As choreographer, Didy created works for Ballet Mainz and Introdans NL and her projects for 2012/2013 are in particular new creations for les Grands Ballets Canadiens de Montréal and le Ballet du Grand Théâtre de Genève.

Didy Veldman created the following 4 solos for the Prix de Lausanne:

Evaluation of career potential

PRIX DE LAUSANNE 2012 – 40th COMPETITION - 21 -

Throughout the competition the jury will evaluate a candidate’s potential as a ballet dancer by considering:

• Artistry • Physical suitability • Courage and individuality • An imaginative and sensitive response to the music • A clear grasp in communicating differing movement dynamics • Technical facility, control, and coordination

While advanced skills will be taken into account, jurors’ primary focus will be on the candidate's potential to succeed as a professional ballet dancer. Each jury member will give one mark between 1 and 9 (9 being the best) for each of the following rounds: Value of the mark: Selections: 1) ballet class 1/4 2) contemporary class 1/4 3) classical variation 1/4 4) contemporary variation 1/4 20 candidates are selected for the finals. Finals: 1) classical variation 1/2 2) contemporary variation 1/2 Eight prize winners will receive scholarships. Results will be announced during the ceremony following the interlude.

“Prix de Lausanne scholarship and apprenticeship” Winning a Prix de Lausanne scholarship enables a laureate to gain free access to the finest dance schools or to be accepted without an audition for an apprenticeship with the most renowned ballet companies. It thus opens the door to a year of top-level training and represents a fast track to the start of an international career. The jury of the Prix de Lausanne awards the following prizes:

• Scholarships consisting in one year’s free tuition at one of the schools mentioned on pages 24-26, and the sum of CHF 16,000.-, intended to cover living expenses during the prize winner’s study year;

• Apprenticeships reserved for finalists over 17 years of age, consisting in a one-year apprenticeship spent with one of the companies mentioned on pages 24-26 and the sum of CHF 16,000.-, intended to cover living expenses during the prize winner’s training year.

Audience favourite This prize reflects an “instant preference” that the public has felt for one of the finalists on the evening itself. Contrary to the prizes awarded by the jury based on an evaluation system spanning several days (see page 21: Evaluation of career potential), the “Audience Favourite” reflects the emotions of the moment. This prize rewards the finalist having earned the most public votes for his/her performance expressed on the ballot papers placed in the dedicated box located in the foyer of the theatre.

FOLLOW UP OF THE PRIZE WINNERS The Prix de Lausanne is committed to its prize winners not only by giving them scholarships, but by following them during their year of training in order to facilitate their choice of institution, help them with administrative questions and to be sure that they adapt to their new school or company.

NETWORKING FORUM For the young dancers who do not win a scholarship during the competition, the Prix de Lausanne organises a Networking Forum where these young dancers can meet Prix de Lausanne partner schools and company directors who would be ready to welcome them. The Prix de Lausanne also arranges a thorough follow-up of these candidates. In 2011, 17 candidates found positions through the networking forum.

Following the highly successful Master Class Series of 2011, the Prix de Lausanne is delighted to announce a new Master Class Series for 2012. Throughout May, five Master Classes will take place, in Basel, Switzerland; Hong Kong, China; Cannes, France; San Francisco, USA; and Melbourne, Australia. The Prix Master Classes offer participants a unique chance to take class with some of the world’s most celebrated dancers – each one a Prix de Lausanne winner – and to hear directly from them about their experience of the Prix and its impact on their careers. The Prix de Lausanne Master Class Series is intended for dance students who

- were born between January 1st, 1994 and December 31st, 1997 - would like the inspirational experience of taking class with a renowned professional

dancer - would like to know more about the Prix de Lausanne

Master Classes are available to male and female students, with a junior and senior class in each location, and class sizes will be restricted to ensure a high quality experience. Each Class will be followed by a a short film and a Question and Answer session with the Prix de Lausanne winner. Registration takes place online, on a‘first come, first served’ basis, from Feburary 2012, with participation confirmed by return e-mail from the Prix de Lausanne upon receipt of payment for the selected Master Class. Through this Master class series, the organisers of the Prix de Lausanne are opening up the life-enhancing experience of the Prix to more and more young dancers around the world. Prix de Lausanne prize winner 2003, Steven McRae, now a Principal with The Royal Ballet in London, says: "The Prix de Lausanne means the world to me. PRIX DE LAUSANNE 2012 – 40th COMPETITION - 30 -

Tremplin Danse Since 2009, The Prix de Lausanne has been proud to organise alternatively a competition and master classes for young dancers from Western Switzerland on behalf of the Leenaards Foundation. The competition gives a young dancer from the French-speaking part of Switzerland the chance to study in a famous European partner school of the Prix de Lausanne through a schorlarship provided by the Leenaards Foundation. The master classes make it possible for the young dancers of the French-speaking part of Switzerland to take part in classical and contemporary ballet classes similar to those given during the Tremplin Danse competition. They can thus decide in full knowledge to take part in the competition the following year or not. The Prix de Lausanne and the Leenaards Foundation are delighted to participate in the education of future Swiss talents.

Classical class It is important for the Prix de Lausanne not only to weave and cultivate worldwide artistic ties aimed at promoting the training of young dancers, but also to be able to communicate with the local population in order to share its passion and its professionalism. Since 2006, activities specially organised for the public in the region have been available within the context of the competition week in Lausanne. In addition to opening its doors to enable dance enthusiasts to observe certain classes and workshops, the Prix de Lausanne offers young dancers from the region a chance to take a classical ballet class given by Amanda Bennett, Director of the Basel Ballettschule and Artistic Director of the Prix de Lausanne as of March 1st, 2012.

Lecture - demonstration Each year, a new topic is dealt with in order to invite the local public to explore the world of dance and its multiple implications. Paola Cantalupo, Artistic Director of the Ecole Supérieure de Danse de Cannes Rosella Hightower and Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1977, and Jason Beechey, Director of the Palucca Hochchule für Tanz Dresden in Germany, will be focused on “an introduction to improvisation”. It will provide a chance for interested dance students to explore for themselves some basic improvisation tasks that Todd Williams, Prix de Lausanne prize winner in 1990, teacher for the contemporary variations during the competition’s week, will lead.

The Prix de Lausanne wishes to celebrate this jubilee with the Lausanne public and share key moments in the life of the competition in several not-to-be-missed events. At the Lausanne University Hospital (CHUV) from January 12th to March 1st, 2012 Exhibition: THE PRIX DE LAUSANNE THROUGH 40 YEARS OF POSTERS A trip backwards in time to discover the posters of the 40 competitions. A selection of photographs taken at the Prix de Lausanne 2011 draws the visitor into the atmosphere of the competition by exploring all of the different stages experienced by the candidates. Global Budget CHF 2,383,000.- For many years, The Prix de Lausanne has received financial support from the Municipality of Lausanne, the Loterie Romande and the Canton of Vaud, corresponding to approximately one third of the budget in cash. The rest is covered by sponsors, patrons and donors. While this cash budget for the 2012 competition amounts to CHF 1,483,000.-, an estimate of various contributions and services in kind provided by sponsors and patrons shows a global budget of over two million Swiss Francs. Among these services in kind, which constitute an essential contribution, one should mention by way of example the free tuition given by the schools providing scholarships and the invaluable assistance of many people working on a voluntary basis. Beth Krasna American and Swiss citizen, Beth Krasna holds an MS in Chemical Engineering from the ETHZ and an MBA from the Sloan School at MIT. She spent 5 years in development, 10 years in venture capital, 10 years turning around industrial companies, and 3 years heading up an IT start-up company before becoming an independent board member (BCV, COOP, ETH-Rat, Raymond Weil, BG Bonnard & Gardel Holding SA). Beth Krasna joined the Prix de Lausanne board in 1985, was appointed to the executive committee in 2006 and became President in March 2010.

Flora Karasso Rupf After becoming a member of the Thessaloniki bar in Greece, Flora

Karasso Rupf obtained an LLM from the University of Geneva and specialised in the field of compliance management. Flora Karasso Rupf founded her own company in 2009 and is a board member of various companies and foundations. Her passion for dance drove her to join the Prix de Lausanne board in 2009 where she was appointed president of the Finance Committee in March 2010.

Prix de Lausanne organisation

PRIX DE LAUSANNE 2012 – 40th COMPETITION - 35 -

Patricia Leroy Patricia Leroy was born in Paris to artistic parents who were active in

the worlds of music and dance. She studied at the University of Lausanne, where she graduated with an MA in literature as well as a Corporate Management diploma. After teaching languages at a high school in Lausanne, in 1987 she accepted the position of assistant to the Director of the Lausanne Stock Exchange. Following the closure of this institution, she decided to devote herself and her skills to the field of dance, an art form for which she had long held a passion. Since 1992, she has served as Secretary General of the Prix de Lausanne, with overall responsibility for the organisation which delivers the annual competition.

Wim Broeckx Wim Broeckx has a long history with the Prix de Lausanne. He was a finalist at the competition in 1980 and returned to take part in the entr'acte during the Gala Performance celebrating the 20th anniversary in 1993. He has, in recent years, served on three occasions as a member of the competition’s jury. He enjoyed a long and successful performing career with four international ballet companies, most notably the Dutch National Ballet, where he rose to become Principal Dancer and, eventually, Assistant Artistic Director. From 2002 till 2010 he was Director of the Dance Department of the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague. Since leaving the Dance department, he is functioning as a freelance teacher, coach and advisor in order to share his knowledge and experience. He is known and respected throughout the dance community for his commitment to the healthy and responsible training of young dancers, and his determination to promote ballet and ensure its recognition as a profession. Since 2008, Wim Broeckx is Artistic President of the Prix de Lausanne.

This year Harlequin will once again support the videoblog competition which lets internet users share in the emotions of the candidates and get a glimpse behind the scenes at the Prix de Lausanne. It also marks the launch of an international online contest Harlequin Like2Win on the official facebook page www.facebook.com/HARLEQUINFLOORS with the chance to win one of 5 iPad 2s ! The idea behind the partnership between Prix de Lausanne and Harlequin is the shared interest in youngsters with a talent for dance. In fact, for over 40 years, the Prix de Lausanne and Harlequin have in turn supported future stars of the dance world. The Prix de Lausanne enables students to access a study grant whilst Harlequin provides top quality dance floors. Harlequin also leads an international awareness campaign on the importance of the correct dance floors in preventing injury to dancers. • Harlequin Europe SA finances the video blog of the competition.
