Day 1

Ladispole to Porto Ercole

Private transfers by two minivans from hotel La Posta Vecchia to Il Pellicano. Stop on the way in Tarquinia. Service ends: Il Pellicano, Porto Ercole.

Tarquinia is a lovely modern city where some of the finest products of Etruscan art can be admired. Tarquinia's large-scale wall paintings are exceptional both for their formal qualities and for their content, which reveal aspects of life, death, and religious beliefs of the ancient Etruscans. The Necropolis' masterpieces are quite unique. Moreover, the depiction of daily life in the frescoed tombs, many of which are replicas of Etruscan houses, is a unique testimony to this vanished culture. Many of the tombs of Tarquinia represent types of buildings which no longer exist in any other form. The cemeteries, replicas of Etruscan town planning schemes, are some of the earliest existing in the region. For all these reasons, the Etruscan Necropolis were inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The tour continues towards Tuscany with a stop for a light lunch in Orbetello or Capalbio, in the lovely "Maremma".

Il Pellicano Il Pellicano is situated on the Argentario peninsula and Porto Ercole is home to one of the most luxurious and elegant hotels in Italy with endless sea views. A central building and various villas are tucked away in a vast Mediterranean garden. Paths wind their way from terraced patios to the swimming pool and private beach. Very spacious rooms with gazebos are sheltered by pine trees. The restaurant has two Michelin stars and the elegant dining room has a large terrace with beautiful sea views and a cellar with more than a thousand labels of wine. The excellent cuisine is Italian and international. Although Il Pellicano is right on the edge of the Mediterranean, there is no beach, because all this area is rocky coastline. There is a heated seawater swimming pool right by the sea. Nights at Il Pellicano are particularly enjoyable on the terrace of the main building, where there is live music each evening (except Tuesdays).

The Countess lives in the historical center of Siena, in an 11th-century building owned by her family since the Middle Ages. She welcomes our best clients in her own house: the cooking class is held in her own kitchen and she teaches us how to prepare a typical Tuscan lunch. When all the courses are cooked, everyone has lunch together in the dining room. The Countess also owns a vineyard in the countryside outside Siena, so we taste her own wine during the lunch.

Orvieto

Orvieto is a town located on a cliff of flaxen tuff which drops to the green valleys below, where the Etruscan population settled. In the early Middle Ages the rock of Orvieto was once seen as an ideal natural bulwark and line of defence, and the new urban centre took shape around the year 1000AD. It reached its zenith in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries and its unique urban layout is still to all extents and purposes what it was then. The most recent public buildings stand side by side with the older churches and private palaces and towers.
