We’re Back in Summit County! Annual Picnic

Saturday June 18

I love the RMOTHG and I am so grateful to the 85 people who decided to join

with CMC as a Section. Please read Lynn Forsberg's (one of the original members and chair) history of RMOTHG elsewhere in this newsletter. Thank you!

I've only been a member since 2008 and I am in awe of many of our long time veteran members in their experience, leadership, and dedication to the club. I thought it might be interesting to "interview" one of these and so I asked Judy Childers who has been a member of RMOTHG for about a year: "What do you see as one of the most significant advantages of the creation in 2005 of the RMOTHG section of CMC Denver group?"

Judy's response: The advantages I have seen are….It acts like a smaller and more intimate group than the CMC as a whole. One can go with a reasonable, easier trip or go “hard core” with the Bobcats. However, I have learned that these retired folks are in REALLY good shape, and can keep an unbelievable pace.

BTW - here are few "highlights" from Judy's time in CMC:

I have been in the CMC for 48 years. I was a leader for 25 years in the Pikes Peak group (hikes, climbs, X-C skiing, and backpacks even after I moved to Denver. In the PP group I served as Safety and Leadership Chair, State Board Director (Member at Large), and Group Chairman in 1975. In the Denver Group I was a State Board Director, on the then Executive Committee, and named the HAMS newsletter “Thin Air”. A fond memory was leading “Ladies' Day" climbs on easy 14’ers like Quandary (10 times) to make them more accessible (slower pace) and less intimidating to women. Half the group were men and they kept up with us! I also enjoyed climbing Mt Silverheels, a 13er’ 9 times most of which was on my birthday. There were some good parties up there! (OMG - That is amazing!) Other thoughts:

1) The next RMOTHG board meeting will be May 16th at 2:00 P.M. in the Golden Public Library meeting room. This location is at 1019 10th Street in Golden. This is both a change of location and meeting time from our past meetings. All RMOTHG members are welcome to attend.

2) Please notify via email any RMOTHG board member or committee chair (whose email addresses are located at end of this newsletter) of any concerns, suggestions, ideas, etc. At the last board meeting, the "Close The Loop" technique was suggested so that every RMOTHG member gets a prompt reply.

3) We've all had to cancel hikes, snowshoes, bike rides, etc for good reasons. Please remember, however, it is each member's responsibility to cancel themselves from a hike on the CMC website. This is how it's done:

After logging in to CMC, go to "Membership", then on left side go to "My Trips", then scroll to the bottom of the trip you need to cancel and hit "Cancel Reservation". Done!

4) After all the spring snow, there will be a lot of muddy trails. Please remember that part of "Leave No Trace" is to walk through mud, not around it, if possible so as not to cause trail erosion, etc. I know that it can be a challenge but do your best! Some open space parks may be closed during this spring mud season so check with their websites: BoulderCountyOpenSpace.org 303-678-6200 and www.jeffco.us/parks 303-271-5925. Also, remember to bring a plastic bag and change of shoes to keep the driver's car clean (and the driver happy).

5) On April 6th, the summer hike leaders met to plan Wednesday summer hikes from May through September. Each Wednesday has an average of three hikes planned. AND there are several new leaders in training (thank you thank you) AND some new hikes! Yippee - my favorite activity!! Now if Mother Nature would just cooperate a little more...

6) Although RMNP celebrated its centennial in 2015, the National Park Service is celebrating its centennial on August 25, 2016. The U.S. Postal Service (aka snail mail) is issuing 16 commemorative stamps for the NPS in June. Check them out - they are truly beautiful! And they are 'forever'.

I share this quote from Enos Mills: "The trail compels you to know yourself and to be yourself, and puts you in harmony with the universe. It makes you glad to be living. It gives health, hope, and courage, and it extends that touch of nature which tends to make you kind."

Happy Trails, Everyone! Elaine

Update on RMOTHG Jerseys & Jackets

DID YOU KNOW?

The History of RMOTHG RMOTHG started as a chapter of OTHGI (Over the Hill Gang International).

We had about 225 members. Our main activities were skiing, hiking, biking, and a social event each month. In August, 2005 the international organization called me and said

they were no longer going to sponsor the many chapters all over the world. This would mean our officers and leaders would no longer be covered by insurance.

At this time we joined CMC as a section for people 50 and older. They welcomed us because many of their members were looking for an older group to do activities with. RMOTHG Section now has about 800 members. It has been a good partnership.

Three people who served as President of the International chapter are still members of our section. They are Gurney Bartlett, Sandy Curran and myself.

CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS: NEW MEMBER SUPPORT

TEAMS FORMING Remember how overwhelming CMC seemed when you first joined?

How do I use the calendar? What is a B hike? How do I cancel a trip? What is the difference between WTS and BMS? You probably figured it all out with the help of other

members.

Your Denver Council’s primary project this year is to “enhance the first year member experience.” This will become a permanent and on-going Council endeavor. We are offering three areas of volunteer involvement in support of this effort. We especially are seeking members with fewer than two years’ membership in the club (because the need is fresh in your mind) but all are welcome to apply.

Our goal is to recruit enough volunteers to spread the work over many hands. Each small team will have a dedicated Council Member Liaison to advise and assist the effort.

Since these volunteer positions are new, and some of these programs are just starting up, this is a great opportunity to help influence an important new CMC program area and to help create a volunteer position that suits you.

These are the small teams forming:

New and Prospective Member Orientation – This team sets up and presents regularly scheduled once-a-month evening sessions for Denver Group new members.

First Year Member Newsletter – This team educates new Denver Group members through periodic email communication, with the goal of broadening new member interest and lessening perceived new member barriers.

New Member Contact – This team contacts new members by phone and/or personal email in their first year per a set frequency. Calls are made mostly on Monday through Thursday evenings from the CMC offices.

CYCLING Spring has sprung. It’s biking season. Let’s get started. Weekly cycling trips are on Fridays in the Denver area beginning the first Friday in May and continuing through September. We usually ride a distance of 20 to 30 miles at a speed of 10 to 12 mph in the mornings and finish with an optional lunch at a nearby restaurant. Occasionally, we’ll have a leader for a slower group of riders, the Terrapins. Our rides are mostly on paved level bike paths, however, we do encounter some hills and gravel trails. The essential items for participating are plenty of water, necessary tools to repair a flat tire (replacement tube for your tire size, lots of help is available), appropriate clothing for changes in weather and carrying ID and medical card. The wearing of a helmet is mandatory. Email notices are sent out several days prior to the excursions to describe the weekly ride and with signup at www.cmc.org. The notices will state if a leader of the Terrapins is available. The groups will start at the same time and hopefully finish together for the optional lunch. The meeting time is usually 8:30 am with departure at 9:00 am. Guests are allowed with signing of a waiver form. Guests may participate in two of our activities before joining the Rocky Mountain Over The Hill Gang section and the Denver Group of CMC. If you are interested in cycling, please contact me at [email protected]. If you were on last year’s list, you will automatically be on this year’s list. Please contact me to be removed from the list. See you on the trails,

Pete Spandau

REFRESHMENT BREAK ALONG CLEAR CREEK

RMOTHG relies exclusively on volunteers to lead our hiking, snowshoeing, and bicycling trips.

Please talk to one of our existing leaders or board members about becoming a leader. Required leader classes are posted at http://www.hikingdenver.net/trip-leaders.

RMOTHG has funds available to pay for classes. If RMOTHG pays for classes, there is an obligation to lead trips.

WE ALWAYS WANT NEW LEADERS!  CYCLING

Hill Topics MAY 2016 P of 8 13

May is the official start of the spring, summer, and fall hiking season for the Rocky Mountain Over the Hill Gang. Carole Adler and Jeff Flax will continue to coordinate our Wednesday hiking trips. We still have a need for more hike leaders, especially at the easy and moderate hiking levels. Please contact Jeff or Carole if you are interested in becoming a trip leader.

On Wednesday, April 6th, our hiking leaders met to schedule our Wednesday hikes for May through October. Most early season hikes will be in lower elevation areas relatively close to the metro area. These areas include Jefferson County Open Space and Colorado State Parks. As the weather gets warmer, we will move to the high country.

Additionally, Jeff Flax will lead a number of A and B quiet/contemplative hikes this summer. Hikers on these trips are asked to refrain from any conversations (except with leaders as necessary) during these trips, other than during stops and lunch/snack breaks.

We will publish the planned hikes for each coming month in the RMOTHG newsletter. However, this schedule is tentative and may require changes due to weather, trail closures, etc. The leader has sole

authority for changing hike locations or canceling hikes.

The Wednesday hiking announcements are usually sent between 5:00pm and 6:30pm on the Friday prior to each of the Wednesday trips. The trips fill up very quickly, however generally members on the wait lists are added to the trip roster as participants change their Wednesday plans.

***Please register for one trip only, including wait lists, in order to provide an opportunity for all RMOTHG to participate in our hiking trips. There have been occasions when a member has added their name to two lists. As a result, other members were not able to participate in any of the trips that week. ***

We have another hiking list called the Bobcats. These trips are on various weekdays, but usually not on Wednesdays. The trips tend to be challenging in terms of distance, elevation gain, and difficulty.

If you are not on the Wednesday hiking or the Bobcat email lists and want to be included, send an email to [email protected] specifying which list(s) you wish to

join.

Occasionally e-mails to RMOTHG members regarding upcoming Wednesday hiking activities are not delivered to members' inboxes and bounce. The problems originate with the recipient’s e-mail host (for example, CenturyLink's Q.com addresses) and not RMOTHG.org. We continue to notify e-mail hosts of these issues when they arise, however there isn’t much more we can do to correct these delivery problems. E-mail notices for Wednesday hikes are usually sent out on Fridays

between 5:00pm and 6:30pm. If you are on the list to receive announcements for these activities and do not receive a Friday e-mail announcement, please check the CMC.org calendar for upcoming RMOTHG Wednesday trips. Please also notify Jeff Flax at [email protected] if you do not receive any of the Friday e-mails. The trips are open for sign-up on CMC.org at the time the e-mail. announcements are sent.
