Capture your effortsDesignate someone to take photos and videos on the day of to capture your event.

Tell your storyShare your event in your newsletter, on your website, in your local paper, with local politicians and on social media. Let people know why you support New Mexico agriculture!

Bring turnips into the classroomIncorporate turnips and nutrition education, or ask a turnip farmer to come to talk with students, staff, or other folks at your school.

PL ANNING YOUR TERRIFIC TURNIP TASTINGOnce you determine your event, decide where to celebrate.

In the cafeteriaServe your turnips on the lunch line and take pictures of kids and staff enjoying turnips in the cafeteria.

In the classroomCoordinate your Turnip Tasting over a school intercom—have the principal or administrator count down over the loud speaker so everyone at the school crunches at once.

As a communityBring all students and staff together to taste at the same time in the same place. Organize your tasting with your regular fire drill so that everyone is in the same place. Have participants form the shape of a turnip on the playground.

Great ideas from the Terrific Turnip Tasting:• Set a time to coordinate throughout your school.• Take a creative picture with everyone in matching colored shirts.• Have students color in pictures of carrots to post all over the school.• Build in activities from different classes around turnips—have students write turnip-themed poems,

do turnip-themed word problems.

Salad turnips taste sweet and crunch when you bite them. They have a tender skin and no spiciness. They look round and white and feel smooth. They are also called Tokyo or Hakurei turnips because they originally grew in Japan.

Count the turnips in each group and match them to the correct number.

PurposeThe purpose of this lesson is to introduce a new food to the children in your classroom. The more times children are exposed to new foods, the more likely they are to eat and enjoy these foods in the future.

OverviewIn this lesson, children will describe what a turnip looks like under a magnifying glass. Children will also share if they like how a salad turnip feels, smells and tastes.

Today we are going to be detectives.

Does anybody know what a detective does?

A detective gathers clues by using his or her eyes, hands, nose, and mouth. We are all going to be food detectives today. We are going to use a magnifying glass, something all good detectives carry, to look closely at a food that many of us have not tried before. After we all take a turn looking at the new food, we get to smell and taste the new food.

Sensory play for preschool: Place scrub brushes and plastic vegetables into a water table to let the kids “clean” veggies.

Sprout seeds: Soak bean seeds overnight. Drain. Place a moist paper towel into a Ziploc bag and place a few seeds in the bag so that they are visible. Close bag and put in a place where they will not be disturbed. Watch the seeds over the next days to see how the seeds send out roots and leaves

A cocky rooster steps in and pulls, sending him into the air, holding onto the turnip. No one knows that a mother bear in her underground den has kicked the turnip up through the soil to give the family room to sleep through the winter.
