and customer approval, production planning, calcu-lation, etc. represent an interruption in the process. Possible consequences are defects, loss of time, and higher costs. Reducing touchpoints and automation of processes thus unlock previously untapped profitability. Bottlenecks are eliminated. You can use the perfor-mance of the machines to increase your productivity. Find out how at Profit Stations I and II.

• Profit Station III and IV focus on the printing and postpress processes. We will show how to significantly increase your productivity achieving higher machine operating times – and therefore an increase in the saleable sheets per hour. The automatic availability of all relevant job data, reduction of make ready through productivity-oriented planning and the autonomous print and postpress production with Push to Stop are to be experienced here.

• “After the job is before the job” describes what happens in Profit Station V. Once a job is finished, it is essential not only to get it to the customer in time and the invoice out in parallel, but also to be aware of how the job contributed to the economic success. If you don’t know, you can’t improve. This holds true on a day-to-day basis but also for long-term planning and strategic decisions each entrepreneur has to take. The quality of data analysis can make the difference between modest profit and great success – and we will show simple, fast and efficient tools that provide answers helping to make the right business decisions.

Heidelberg receives awardfor its digitization strategy• One of the five best companies in product and portfolio

management• Perfect implementation of success factors – thinking

from the customer’s point of view• Digital transformation of internal and external processes

The Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at the RWTH Aachen University selected the five best companies in product and portfolio management in cooperation with Complexity Management Academy GmbH and a high-profile industry consortium. The aim of the benchmarking project was to identify particularly successful methods, structures, and processes in the systematic implementation of product and portfolio management. The companies Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg), Endress+Hauser Flowtec, Festo, Wittenstein alpha, and Drägerwerk were named as “Successful Practices 2018” for their outstanding performance.

Over 10,000 companies were whittled down to just 148 candidates. A majority of the participating companies are from Germany. The other companies are headquartered in Europe and the USA. Following an in-depth screening process, the consortium partners identified five companies from 21 top performers. The consortium partners visited the hand-picked companies and analyzed their methods, structures, and processes in product and portfolio management on site.

Thinking in terms of customer benefit

Heidelberg is in the process of digitizing its internal and external processes across the board under the motto “Heidelberg goes digital”. This includes product and portfolio management. Of the fourteen success factors identified, Heidelberg has successfully implemented the greatest number.

This includes a close relationship with customers whose productivity is increased through digitized workflows. Examples are autonomous printing with the “Push to Stop” philosophy. The Heidelberg Assistant is a transparent customer interface that visualizes the production process for the customer, offers extensive know-how, and provides a purchasing and benchmark platform. This is implemented on the basis of cloud technology and also includes service with eCall. Based on this customer data, Heidelberg can offer its customers individual advice and further develop and optimize their production. The specific needs of commercial, packaging, and label printers are determined using customer-oriented segmentation. Thinking from the customer’s point of view results in special solutions that benefit these very segments.

All data and facts from the field are incorporated into the further development of product and portfolio management and are constantly mirrored and checked with the market.

“The award shows that our digital strategy is regarded as asuccessful approach. With the digital transformation of its internal and external processes, Heidelberg wants to regain its position as a model company in the industry,” explains Rainer Hundsdörfer, Chief Executive Officer of Heidelberg.

The selection of the “Successful Practices” took place in consultation with a jury of experts from successful international companies, which were also the project consortium. Consortium members included Diehl Metering, KION Group, Peri, Rittal, Schaeffler, Thyssen Krupp, and Wago Kontakttechnik. The project was headed up by Professor Günther Schuh, Executive Director of the Laboratory for Machine Tools and Production Engineering (WZL) at the RWTH Aachen University.

Insignis-Etiketten in Vienna has been using a Gallus Labelfire since spring of this year, and is opening up new business areas with the digital inkjet.

Gallus Labelfire 340

Heidelberg customers successful in the growth market of labels• Five percent of the total print volume – two-digit growth opportunities in digital inkjet printing• Asia the market with the strongest growth – followed by Europe and the USA• Heidelberg subsidiary Gallus continues to expand its digital product portfolio for label printing • Over twenty Gallus Labelfire digital printing systems already sold worldwide• Digitization increases machine availability

Labels give products their unique identity and boost the impulse to buy at the point of sale. Although the label market accounts for just five percent of the worldwide print volume of around EUR 400 billion, it has the biggest growth potential in the industry. This is because of the high demand for labels with unusual embellishments and just-in-time delivery. The annual growth in self-adhesive labels is over four percent, increasing to double digits for digital inkjet printing. Asia is now the fastest growing label market in the world with over 40 percent, followed by Europe with 25 percent and the USA with almost 20 percent. Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg) provides a comprehensive product portfolio with its subsidiary Gallus that supports label printers with digital and conventional machine systems for success in this promising market.

Run of 1 and personalized – a finished label in a single passThe requirements of the label market are changing, with demand growing for more and more short runs and personalized or versioned labels. Reason enough for the Austrian company Insignis-Etiketten to establish a new business unit that has been offering new applications in digital printing since spring of this year with the Gallus Labelfire 340. “Flexo printing, screen printing, coating, and inkjet are brought together perfectly in this system, enabling us to produce a fully embellished and die-cut label,” confirms CEO Ferdinand Hager. This means that faster production with less waste is possible during digital printing of embellished labels. Insignis produces labels for the food and beverage, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and industry market segments. “We save time, costs, and material and can also approach new clients in the agency sector to show the possibilities offered by personalization and versioning,” explains Hager.

HUB Labels, based in Hagerstown, USA, has been a Gallus customer for many years in conventional label production. The company produces i.a. Premium labels for the Food, Beverage and HBA markets where the demand for short runs, with which brand producers can respond faster and more flexibly to current market trends, is growing. In the past, it was difficult for HUB labels to offer such jobs at a competitive price. That’s why the company decided on a Gallus Labelfire 340 digital label press: “The Labelfire enables us to reliably and repeatable produce high quality color consistent premium labels from run to run. This has allowed us to win numerous orders that we have had to leave to our competitors in the past, “said Thomas Dahbura President Hub Labels, Inc.

Since its introduction, over 20 Gallus Labelfire 340 have already been sold. Customers have a high opinion of this machine, which combines the latest digital printing technologies with the benefits of conventional press and postpress technology.

The new Gallus Smartfire was presented to the market for this first time

at this year’s Gallus Innovation Days. The entry-level model for digital label printing produces a fully die-cut label, ready to ship on a roll, in a single pass. The visitors were impressed and the Smartfire immediately found buyers in Switzerland and Poland.

Label printing booming in AsiaAsia is a big market for conventional Gallus machines. For example, the label printer Fine Webtech Label Solution System in South Korea installed its fourth Gallus EM 430 S this year. Fine Webtech is a leader in label production for the household, personal care, cosmetics, and industry market segments. Its regular customers include brands like LG, Samsung and Amorepacific. “The Gallus machines have increased our productivity and flexibility, and enabled us to expand our range of substrates,” explains Vice President Sunghwan Jang. “With the Gallus machines, we are competitive and can offer our customers the highest quality with the shortest delivery times.”

The Indian company Sonic Labels in Mumbai decided on a Gallus ECS 340. Founded seven years ago, the label printer serves the household, cosmetics, and industry market segments. “We want to offer our customers high-quality labels at low prices, with delivery within 48 hours. The Gallus ECS 340 lets us do this,” says Aditya Ojha, Head of Marketing and Design. The Gallus ECS 340 has been the most successful and highest selling label printing press in its class since its introduction in 2009. Nearly 500 machines have been sold worldwide.

Lifecycle services ensure high availabilityHeidelberg and Gallus are working intensively on new service offerings to promote digitization in businesses and offer customers a concrete added value. For example, the product “M-Call” offers automated ticket creation based on an autonomous process from the machine to the Gallus help desk that enables a faster response by the service team. Customers also benefit from the virtually completed integration of the Gallus sales and service organizations into the Heidelberg Group, which means they can take advantage of Heidelberg’s worldwide service network.

Sunghwan Jang, Vice President of Fine Webtech Label Solution System, has already installed his fourth machine from Gallus this year.

Kapil Vaidya (left), Technical Manager, and Aditya Ojha, Head of Marketing at Sonic Labels in Mumbai, want to offer its customers an even better service withthe newGallus ECS 340.

Jointly developed by Gallus and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG, the new digital inline label printing system features a printing module with state-of-the-art inkjet printing heads. The strengths of digital printing combined with inline finishing processes that have been specially optimized for digital printing enable the Gallus Labelfire 340 to varnish, embellish and further process labels inline – from the roll to the finished die-cut label in a single production operation.

Heidelberg presents latest digital solutions and “Smart Print Shop”at customer events in Japan• Open house: digitized and automated workflows with

“Push to Stop” enable increases in productivity of up to 50 %

• Presentation of the new Versafire digital printing systems• Primefire 106 exhibited at IGAS using virtual reality

Over 450 visitors experienced how productivity can be significantly increased with digitized and automated processes at the open house at Heidelberg Japan in Tokyo at the end of July. Under the motto “Smart Print Shop” with “Push to Stop”, the guests from Japan and Asia saw how an integrated work-flow incorporates all processes and optimizes the overall equipment efficiency (OEE). Push to Stop is setting new rules for the game: whereas in the past the operator had to manually initiate a large number of steps in the production process, now he only needs to intervene in the automated process chain as necessary. Thanks to intelligent networking and automation, the machines can organize and handle the production process on their own. This goes as far as autono-mous printing, and has the potential to double the OEE. Heidelberg has sold over 400 machines suitable for Push to Stop since it was introduced at drupa 2016.

Japanese customers want to increase productivityJapanese and Asian print shops are already highly industrialized, but want further productivity increases to remain competitive and be profitable. They saw the answer at the open house in the shape of a Speedmaster XL 106 eight-color machine with perfecting, which independently produced twelve magazine signatures with a run length of 150 sheets within 30 minutes. This record was possible thanks to the high level of automation of the machine, standardized jobs, and the integration into the Prinect print shop workflow. The Speedmaster XL 106 was equipped with Prinect Press Center XL 2, Wallscreen XL, and Intellistart 2 as well as the Prinect Inpress Control 2 inline spectral measurement and control system. The innovative DryStar LED UV drying technology resulted in instantly dry sheets in the delivery, which were sent directly for further processing in the postpress machines also integrated into the workflow – the Stahlfolder KH 82 folding machine and Polar cutting systems. Saphira coordinated consumables from the Lifecycle Solutions division also optimized the overall process.

The new Versafire EV and Versafire EP digital printing systems were presented at the open house and printed 28 different jobs on a wide range of substrates and with different applications. The Versafire EV is aimed at customers who want to realize creative applications and enhanced business models. The Versafire EP is designed for flexible production and maximum performance.

When asked about their impressions, the visitors expressed their positive thoughts: Heidelberg is the technology leader that is consistently driving the digital transformation and in this way setting standards in the print media industry.

Digital presentation was well received by visitorsThe company also proved this at IGAS, which took place in Tokyo around the same time, from 26 to 31 July 2018. The audience there was amazed by the Primefire 106 presentation using virtual reality (VR). As the first commercially available industrial inkjet digital printing system in 70 x 100 cm format, the Heidelberg Primefire 106 allows print shops to produce an increasing number of variants with declining run lengths in a profitable way, bring

products to the market faster, and reduce logistics costs through print-on-demand functions. Sample runs can also be produced quickly and easily for market research purposes or decision making. The “Primefire 106 Super Journey” VR shows were all booked out down to the last place and over 1,700 visitors experienced the machine and all its details up close and in 3D.

Heidelberg Japan is a full subsidiary of Heidelberger Druckmaschinen AG (Heidelberg). It is headquartered in Tokyo and has branches in Osaka, Nagoya, Fukuoka, and Sendai. Over 200 employees look after more than 1,500 customers.

Over 450 visitors learned about the “Smart Print Shop” with “Push to Stop” at the open house at Heidelberg Japan in Tokyo.

At the Heidelberg Japan open house, the Speedmaster XL 106-8-P produced 12 print jobs, each with 150 sheets and waste of 20 to 25 sheets, within 30 minutes.

The Versafire EV and Versafire EP digital printing systems were premiered at the Heidelberg Japan open house.

At IGAS in Tokyo, visitors to the Heidelberg Japan stand were able to experience the possibilities of the Primefire 106 industrial inkjet digital printing system up close using virtualreality glasses.
