Turkish Steel Producer Secures Virtualized Data Centers

ChallengeThe heritage of the İÇDAŞ company stretches back over a long time, and today İÇDAŞ has become the leading private producer of steel in Turkey. The company’s main data center in Istanbul was designed to help increase the efficiency and productivity of the overall organization, and information technology has become a strategic building block for the corporate business processes.

“The speed of technological advancements and ever fast-moving competition makes the need for new corporate software and hardware the highest requirement,” said Nilgün Aksoy, IT manager at İÇDAŞ. “Our IT Department was having a hard time responding to new server and resource requests from other departments. New server procurements, upgrade requirements of our former servers, infrastructure requirements, business sustainability requirements, and the various needs of management personnel were increasing with each day.”

To enable a much more flexible IT services model, and to help IT respond faster to user requirements, İÇDAŞ decided to migrate to a virtual server data center model. The company’s compute center now employs VMware ESX servers. However, İÇDAŞ found that setting up security within the virtual environment was causing problems. “It was necessary to establish access control, virus prevention, and cyber attack protection against internal attacks to our virtual servers, but security solutions were interfering with accessibility, server performance, and manageability,” explained Mrs. Aksoy.

Data Market professionals provide İÇDAŞ and other organizations in Turkey with comprehensive technology integration and enterprise support services. The company’s experience with a variety of security solutions and providers made them an invaluable resource during the İÇDAŞ data center migration to virtualization.

“Trend Micro offers excellent solutions for our customers that want to get the best possible results from virtual server and cloud environments,” said Ergün Çelik, a Data Market presales technology consultant for servers and storage. “Deep Security simplifies security and related compliance efforts, by extending protection to physical servers, virtual servers, virtual desktop infrastructure, and cloud environments. The alignment with VMware solutions and the virtualization-aware security model make it a smart choice for today’s businesses.”

Evaluation tests on Deep Security proved highly successful at İÇDAŞ. “We can say that Deep Security fulfilled all of our security needs—without sacrificing performance,” said Mrs. Aksoy. “The Trend Micro solution has eliminated security gaps we had previously encountered, especially during patch implementation on our ERP servers. It has also enabled us to carry out our server access controls more easily, and to get closer to achieving our ISO 27001 goals.”

With its innovative agentless protection, Deep Security is helping İÇDAŞ prepare for the future. The technology experts at İÇDAŞ closely follow the advancements in desktop virtualization, for example, as part of its ongoing efforts to comply with the evolving ISO 20000 and 27001 requirements.

“One of our main areas of interest is in the evolution of cloud strategy,” said Mrs. Aksoy. “As web based applications and user mobility increase, business sustainability becomes more important: thus the need for using cloud services emerges. It will take some time, at least in our country, for cloud technology to start being used for software such as ERP applications. In the mean time, Deep Security positions us to be ready to take steps into the cloud.”

ResultsWith its VMware virtual environment, İÇDAŞ is now able to install new servers in a very short period of time. Resources can be flexibly assigned to or removed from the hosts, reducing the time it takes to respond to user requests.

“The use of a virtual server model has allowed us to decrease infrastructure power and cooling by 60% even as our physical servers have increased by 30%,” said Mrs. Aksoy. “Efficiency is also improved, with total resource usage—CPU, RAM, etc.—up by 40%. Our costs for maintenance, hardware purchases, and licensing for software have also dropped by 30%. Besides these improvements, today we are better able to manage server resources and maintenance downtimes have been minimized.”

The move to Trend Micro has given İÇDAŞ a high level of security within the new data center design, and the ability to consolidate multiple security capabilities into one solution. Mrs. Aksoy explained, “Deep Security eliminated the need to invest in separate firewall and intrusion prevention devices, which we had considered for restricting server access. Upon examining the total investment and maintenance costs, we determined that the investment in Deep Security has been 40% more economical for us. The investment has really paid off.”

“ Deep Security simplifies security and related compliance efforts by extending protection to physical servers, virtual servers, virtual desktop infrastructure, and cloud environments. The alignment with VMware solutions and the virtualization-aware security model make it a smart choice for today’s businesses.”
