    WILD TURKEY IDENTIFICATION (Continued on page 19)

    Size:he wild turkey is the largest o North Americas game birds.

    Feathers:Males: Gobblers have iridescent red, green, copper, bronzeand gold eathers. hey use these bright colors to greatadvantage when attracting emales during breeding season.

    Females: Hens have drab, usually brown or gray eathers.hey make great camoulage and hide hens when they sit ontheir nests.

    Color Phases: A ew wild turkeys grow unusually coloredeathers. hese are known as color phases. here are ourcolor phases, a smokey gray color phase, a melanistic colorphase (all black), an erythritic color phase (reddish coloration)and an albino color phase (very rare).

    Head:Males: Males have brightly colored, nearly

    eatherless heads. During breeding season, thecolor o their heads alternates between red, whiteand blue, oten changing in a ew seconds.

    Hens: A hens head is gray-blue and has somesmall eathers or camoulage.

    Caruncles and Snoods: Both males and emaleshave leshy growths on their heads known ascaruncles. hey also both have snoods, leshy protrubances that hang over their bills andcan be extended or contracted at will. he snood o an adult male is usually much largerthan that o a emale.

    PERMIT RULES Permits must be signed by the permittee.

    It is unlawul to transer or lend a permit to another person.

    WHO NEEDS A TURKEY PERMIT? Anyone age 16 or older who hunts turkey in Nebraska needs a spring turkey or all

    turkey permit. Anyone under the age o 16 years who hunts turkey in Nebraska needs a spring

    youth turkey or all youth turkey permit. here is no minimum age to hunt turkey

    in Nebraska.

    WHO MAY OBTAIN A LANDOWNER TURKEY PERMIT?(Spring and Fall)Residents: Any resident who owns or leases 80 acres or more o arm or ranch land or

    agricultural purposes may obtain one landowner permit per season. Spouse and children are eligible, but only one permit may be issued per person. Eligible amily members may hunt together on the same arm or ranch property.

    Siblings sharing ownership o the qualiying land also are eligible. he permit is restricted to the land owned or leased by them and listed on the

    permit. he maximum number o landowner permits allowed or one arm or ranch is one

    or each 80 acres.

    SNonresidents: Nonresidents who own 320 acres or more o land dedicated to agricultural

    production may receive a limited spring or all permit. Only one permit may be issued per 320 acres. Spouse and children o the landowner also are eligible.

    WHO NEEDS A NEBRASKA HABITAT STAMP?Any resident age 16 or older and all nonresidents who hunt turkey in Nebraska. Only one

    habitat stamp is needed or all hunting o any species in a calendar year.

    Exceptions: Residents who hold a veteran ee-exempt or 69-and-older permit do not need to

    purchase a habitat stamp to hunt turkeys. hey must carry the veteran ee-exemptpermit or 69-and-older permit while hunting.

    Persons hunting on their own land with a landowner permit do not need a habitatstamp.

    WHAT IS A RESIDENT?A resident is any individual who has lived in Nebraska continuously or 30 days andintends to become a resident o this state. A new resident should be prepared to providedocumentation o residency (drivers license, voter registration card, etc.) to an oicerwhen in possession o a resident permit.

    GENERAL TURKEY REGULATIONS

    SHOOTING HOURS(Spring and Fall)Shooting hours are 30 minutes beore sunrise to sunset. It is unlawul to take or attempt

    to take any turkey perched in a tree beore sunrise.

    HUNTER ORANGESpring Recommended, but not requiredFall urkey hunters must wear at least 400 square inches o hunter orange on their

    head, chest and back when hunting during the November irearm deer season.

    HUNTING METHODS(Spring and Fall) Archery Hunters must use archery equipment with arrows that have a sharpened

    hunting head with a blade o at least 7/16-inch radius, or a blunt (bludgeon) headwith a diameter o at least 9/16-inch.

    Legal archery equipment: Longbows Crossbows Recurve bows Compound bows

    Shotgun Hunters must use a shotgun with shells that contain shot size 2 to 7

    only. Slugs are illegal.

    TAGGINGImmediately ater a turkey is taken, the hunter must punch or notch the permit tagshowing the date the bird was taken. Punching/notching the permit tag automaticallycancels the permit tag. his permit must be kept with the permit holder and/or turkey atall times. When the turkey is not with the permit holder, the entire permit tag must beattached to the turkey.

    POSSESSIONIt is unlawul or any person other than a successul permit holder to possess any turkeyor any portion o it. However, any person may receive as a git any portion o the turkey,provided a statement o such git is available or inspection. he statement shall include:the hunters name, telephone number, permit number, species and quantity o each,

    signature o donor, name o recipient, and date o transer.

    TRANSPORTATIONI the permit holder does not accompany the turkey during transportation, the cancelledpermit must be attached to the carcass o the turkey.

    Spring he head, beard or one leg o the turkey must remain naturally attached to thecarcass until the turkey is delivered to a commercial processing acility or the hunter'shome. Any bearded emale turkey harvested in the spring season must have the beardnaturally attached.

    Fall he head or one leg o a turkey must remain naturally attached to the carcass until

    the turkey is delivered to a commercial processing acility or the hunter's home.

    HUNTER SURVEYAt the end o each season, hunters who provided e-mail addresses at the time theypurchased their permits may receive an e-mail survey that is used to determine huntersuccess and total harvest. hose receiving surveys are asked to reply promptly. It isimportant when buying permits online that hunters use an updated e-mail address.

    Survey results are posted at OutdoorNebraska.org.

    HUNTER EDUCATIONHunters age 12 through 29 must have completed irearm hunter education when huntingturkeys with a irearm or crossbow. Bow hunter education is not required or bow and

    arrow hunting o turkeys.

    APPRENTICE HUNTER EDUCATION EXEMPTION CERTIFICATE

    An Apprentice Hunter Education Certiicate provides a novice hunter between the ageso 12 and 29 an opportunity to try hunting and receive guidance rom an experiencedhunter beore completing Hunter Education. A hunter using this certiicate mustbe accompanied at all times while hunting by a licensed adult age 19 or older. hiscertiicate may be purchased twice in consecutive years in a person's lietime or $5each time. he certiicate expires on Dec. 31. Applicable hunt permits are required.

    ACCOMPANIMENThe ollowing turkey hunters must be accompanied: hose under age 12 hose using an Apprentice Hunter Education Exemption Certiicate

    he accompanying person must: Be a licensed experienced hunter age 19 or older. Be certiied in hunter education i he or she is between the ages o 19 and 29. Not accompany more than two holders o an exemption certiicate at one time. Be at all times in unaided visual and verbal communication with the hunter/hunters

    he or she is accompanying.

    WHEN IT IS UNLAWFUL TO HUNTIt is illegal to hunt: when trespassing on private land; get permission. as a party hunt; every hunter must shoot his or her own game. with a ri le within 200 yards o an inhabited dwelling or eedlot and hunt with all

    other equipment within 100 yards, unless permission has been granted by the owneror tenant.

    harvest any game birds by baiting or attracting them to the place where hunted bydistribution o grain or other eeds.

    drive or disturb game birds or game animals with or rom any aircrat or boatpropelled by power or sail.

    harvest or trap any game bird rom a vehicle.

    OTHER UNLAWFUL ACTSIt is unlawul to: waste game. spotlight rom a vehicle or vessel while in possession o a irearm or bow and arrow. dig, cut or destroy natural or planted vegetation on any state-owned or controlled

    area.

    cause game birds or game animals to depart rom a game reserve or game sanctuary. use electrically ampliied imitations o bird calls, including records, tapes, compact

    discs, and digital audio iles, to take game birds. sell or trade the meat o any game bird or game animal. communicate the location o any game animal or game bird by radio or other

    electronic device to or rom any aircrat, vessel, vehicle, snowmobile, or otherconveyance one day beore or during the open season.

    carry a irearm, archery equipment or other projectile device on a snowmobile,

    except when unloaded and in a case.

    WHEN IT IS UNLAWFUL TO SHOOTIt is illegal to shoot: rom any public highway, road or bridge, including the traveled surace and the

    right-o-way, whether on oot or rom a vehicle, or attempt to shoot any bird, ish or other animal rom an aircrat.

    GAME VIOLATIONShe Nebraska Legislature has passed statutes that increased the ines and penaltiesor a variety o game and ish violations. he new ines range rom $25 to $15,000,depending on the severity o the violation and the species involved. he liquidateddamages (assessed in addition to court costs) are set by the legislature as replacementcosts or wildlie taken illegally. he damages apply to each animal taken illegally andapply to wanton waste.     Beard:A male turkey grows a cluster o long, hair-like eathers(beard) rom the center o its chest. On adult males, thesebeards average about 9 inches in length. en to 20 percent o

    Legs:Wild turkey legs are reddish-orange. hey have our toes oneach oot. Male wild turkeysgrow large spurs on the backso their lower legs. hese spursare pointed, bony spikes and are

    used or deense and to establishdominance. Spurs can grow up to2 inches in length.

    Tail:Wild turkey tails are usually 12 to 15 inches long and bandedat their tips. he color o the bands in the tail varies bysubspecies. Male wild turkeys an their tails when displayingto attract a mate. All tail eathers o adult males (toms) arethe same length. he eathers orming the center o a tail o a

    juvenile (jake) are usually longer than the rest o the eathersin the tail.
