According to a Japanese legend, if someone folds a

thousand paper cranes, their wish will be granted by

a majestic crane. This same story drove Sadako Sasaki,

a girl who developed leukemia following the drop of the

atomic bomb on Hiroshima, to fold hundreds of cranes

in the hopes of recovering from her illness. In turn, her

story drove UCLA Circle K to fold a thousand cranes

    for a boy with cancer.

Origami Crane Making started with a simplerequest to your current board members: to sign

a Get Well Soon card for a Kiwanians son,

Josh, who is currently undergoing chemotherapy. Your

Kiwanis Family chair, Brian Kan, decided to take the

idea further and wanted the club to make origami cranes.

Over the past few weeks, you may have

seen your fellow Circle K-ers folding brightly

colored paper or teaching each other how to

fold cranes. Im proud to say we successfully

folded all 1,000 sheets into cranes!

Now, were working on stringing and beautifullyarranging them in the form of a spiral chandelier.

To date, we spent about 100 hours working on the

cranes and it really shows how much care, effort and

thought that our members put towards this gift. I cant

wait until we give these cranes to Josh to let him know

that UCLA Circle K hopes that he becomes healthy and

    cancer-free!

    U-R-O-C-K, U ROCK, U ROCK!

This years Bruin Run/Walk started off

n the pouring rain but ended up being a

pretty spectacular morning. The 5K event,

    beneting our local Mattel Childrens

Hospital here at UCLA, featured hundreds

of participants as they braved the wet and

cold morning either running or walking 5K

    around our UCLA campus.

My tooth fairy team and I stood guard

at the 1K mark, cheering individuals on as

hey reached the 1K mark or were nearing

he end of their 5K journey. Our star of the

event had to be Theresa Phan, who showed

exceptional spirit by cheering on each and

every person whilst giving them uplifting

compliments and laughs as well. While we

may have had too much fun in our tooth

fairy wings, complete with our fairy wands

and tiaras, what made the event amazing

was seeing so many people, young and

    old, participating and supporting their

    respective teams.

Shout out to TEAM GRACE and TEAM

ALLIE, who donned purple and pink t-shirts

respectively, making it easier for us to see

who was coming up the route and allowingus to prepare our cheers for them! Not only

did we get to cheer these amazing people

on, at the end of the event we got to get

our hands on some nice freebies as well as

meet Kenton Duty from Disney Channels

    Shake It Up!

All in all, Bruin Run/Walk was such a fun

and fantastic eventthere was no better

way to spend a Sunday morning than with

    some awesome service and fun!

First o all, congrats! How does it eel to be picked as

Boardie o the Month? Why thank you! To be honest, Im attered and genuinely sur-

rised to be chosen. Apparently its not a shocker to other board-es...? Seriously though, I do my best for the club, not the recogni-

    on.

What made you want to be on board as Service

chair? Is it everything you expected and more? The club has done so much for me that I felt like I could give

back to it by taking on a position on board. I really didnt know

what to expect, but you have no idea how much I love being

ervice co-chair. It gives me an opportunity to work directly with

he service organizations and expand the various ways our club

    mpacts the Los Angeles community.

You have two other people working with you. How do

ou guys split up the work and work about with one

nother?Gerardo, Jamie and I have weekly planning meetings to dis-

uss service events were planning, the status of upcoming proj-

cts and anything we could do to improve the quality of the

ervice that UCLA Circle K does. Each of us acts as the main

ontact for several service organizations and we work with their

olunteer coordinators to arrange service projects for our club.

ervice Team is in constant communication with each other to en-ure that the details are set for members to volunteer.

The frst quarter o the terms coming to an end. How

do you eel?Mindblown. Where did the past nine weeks go?! What have I

been doing with my life? Oh right... service. _~ Haha, otherwise,

m really excited for the rest of the year since were off to such

    n amazing start.

Goals or next year? For Circle K... I want to inspire the members with the spir

service by nding service projects that are both fun, rewar

and have a direct impact for the volunteers and those who

help. For myself... platinum MRP and well, I dont really t

about goals. I just kinda go out and do what I do.

Whats your avorite Pokemon and why?

Jolteon! Cause hes cute. So if you herd I liek mudkipz, tall just a rumor.

For the month of May, one board member stood out

mong the rest, for her dedication to service and uplifting

pirit. Jaimie Yap, a third-year biology major, exceeded

ll expectations as a board member and set an example

or any and all to follow. What does she have to say about

eceiving this title? Lets nd out.

At Spring Training Conference (STC) in CSU

Fullerton, fellow Circle K members from all over

Cal-Nev-Ha joined together to participate in

a variety of workshops, ranging from Suit Up

101 to How to Create Appropriate Cheers.

Our very own Rouel Soberano even did a hip

hop workshop! STC is an annual event that

allows us not only to get together and see

friends from different clubs, but to learn waysthat we can make the club better.

After the opening ceremony, we all shufed

off to the workshop of our choice. I attended a

fundraising workshop; it was really interesting

to see what fundraisers people came up with.

Somebody even suggested a bad movie

nightyou would pay a dollar to get in, but

four dollars to get out! But the day wasnt

over yet! We then went to JonJons DCM,

where we went on a Back to the Future ride!

After lunch and a couple more workshops,

headed back to the auditorium for the clo

    ceremony.

UCLA Circle K then decided to go get so

Korean BBQ. We all agreed on Cham Sut G

because there was a certain waiter we

wanted to see: the one, the only J.Kwon! W

we got there, we learned that his shift di

start until 6:30. The hour we had to wait wby much too slowly, but J.Kwon nally show

up, and we got to take pictures with him!

Overall, STC was a great experience. To

honest, I was a little tired of everything be

I went; it was the end of spring quarter, and

I wanted to do was go home. STC was a g

way to get me pumped up about Circle K,

Its Friday the 13th. As darkness

descends on Janss Steps, a lone whistle can

be heard in the distance. Packs of college

tudents clad in camo and headbands

disappear into the trees. Then. You see

hem. ZOMBIES. A few at rst, the zombie

orde grows quickly, gaining comrades as

umans fall victim to their infectious touch.

What scenarios will the humans be tested

with this time? Will it be putting together a

puzzle under life and death circumstances, protecting the priceless zombie vaccine,

or sacricing themselves for a designated

    VIP?

Armed with Nerf guns, socks, and

marshmallows, the humans attempt to ght

back and stave off the advancing zombie

army for as long as possible. Some come

prepared for the worst, outtted with

multiple weapons and an ample supply of

ammo. Others go old school and opt for

sock bombs. Students ban together, lettinggo of petty differences in favor of survival.

One by one however, as more and more fall

to the living dead, friends nd themselves

running from the very people ghting by

their side moments before. Those who

    become one of them show

    now mercy and join the

    horde, pinpointing weak and

    defenseless groups to attack.

    Bullets and marshmallows

can only do so much as the

zombies countdown, eagerlyawaiting the moment they

can unfreeze and attack again. Survival

is the ultimate goal in this epic game of

    Humans versus Zombies.

HvZ is quickly becoming a quarterly

tradition for UCLA Circle K, this time joined

by Metro division for an all out epic battle

across campus. It was amazing to see

everyone from Metro with their tricked out

guns and hardcore gear. Our very own

On April 24, UCLA Circle K held its annual End of the Year Banquet

o commemorate the 2010-2011 term. Students, Kiwanians, and

ther esteemed guests celebrated in Kerckhoff Halls Grand Salon

with dinner, awards, speeches, and videos.

The night kicked off with the presentation of the Family of the

Year award to the Creepy Fiends and the House of the Year award

o the House of Sully. Afterwards, guests laughed at the general

member superlative slideshow. Diane Santos, a dedicated and

ompassionate woman, won Member of the Year.Capturing all the wonderful memories of the past term, the End

f the Year Slideshow was nostalgic for many in the room. The

raduating seniors of Circle K were also recognized and given

eather portfolios to thank them for their contribution to our

    rganization.

After Stephanie Wong, administrative vice president, retired

he 2010-2011 committee chairs, President Grace Ann Cecilio

presented her farewell speech. Recognizing family, friends,

nd fellow Circle K-ers, Grace ended her speech in applause, a

tanding ovation, and recognition for a successful year.

Afterwards, Brett Butler, immediate past Metro Div

Following the introduction and installation of the 2011-2

committee chairs, Neil Yonzon, the newly-installed Preside

UCLA Circle K, provided his incoming address.

Overall, the night was full of laughs, tears, celebration fo

old year, and excitement for the new.

With the last round of midterms amongstus and nals slowly creeping, everyone could

use a little spirit lift, right? Just to everyones

luck, UCLAs Circle K went out to Bruin Plaza

to lift spirits in a Random Act of Kindness

    (R.A.K.) Week!

To kick off the random acts of kindness, on

Monday we pinned people with compliment

clothespins. The compliments ranged from I

like your shirt to Youre pretty without any

makeup on to Youre cute. Call me! [num-

ber here]. One girl liked her compliment somuch she took a picture of her clothespin and

posted it as her Facebook prole picture and

one person even contacted the number that

was on his pin saying that it made his day.

The next three days consisted of giving out

free hugs (sometimes limited edition dehugs ;D), giving out goodies such as

cakes, and randomly cheering for peo

R.A.K. club also joined us on Wedne

and Thursday to give out free hugs. De

not everyone accepting our hugs and g

ies, the event was a success because t

who needed the hugs went for it and

looked a lot better after receiving them

Every person that accepted a free

    gave a real two-armed bear hug, w

made the people participating in the efeel better too. While we were out there

ing to bring sunshine into peoples days,

brought sunshine into ours, so this random

of kindness week went above and bey

    expectation. Yay!

I felt like a kid again once I stepped into the Mulligan Family Fun

Center for a CAYP Kiwanis Funraiser. The rst thing we did when we

ot there was play DDR! It brought Neil back to his childhood when he

sed to hit up the arcade all the time. I felt like such a noob compared

o Brian and Neil since they were so good they had to hold onto thebar. Talk about a pro!

We all went go-karting afterwards and it was Brians rst time.

omehow, we ended up being stuck on the track for over 10 minutes.

The Kiwanis had a DCM and fed us with yummy pizza later on. Brian

nd Neil updated the Kiwanis about what was going on in our club. The

best part was playing mini-golf (that turned into other things) with the

CAYP Kiwanis. We gave up playing a real game of mini-golf at one

point and started trying other methods to get the golf ball in the hole.

It was great day overall; Im glad we were able to know the CAYP

    Kiwanians better.

all of us to the event so no one

    shaved ice with Cal State

It is the happiestay of your college career, but it can de-itely be also the scariest. This day markshe end of your undergraduate life, andwell, the start of a life in the real world.

Now, some of you might not y as farway from the nest as you wish, while others

will go on and reach mountains and beyond.Whatever the future brings, just remembero keep on apping those wings. On your

way, you will meet all sorts of people, somef whom will tell you that you cant y veryar. They are probably right, but only prob-

bly. Thats because according to all knownaws of physics, there is no way that turkeys, with their fat bodies and useless wings, canet themselves off the ground, let alone to aifferent ranch of higher education. But you guys are no ordinary turkeys.

hats right, my ne feathered friends.

omewhere along the way, you guys havell chosen a path of service, leadership,nd fellowship. You all chose to wanderff away from the free-ranged ways ofhe foster farms of UCLA and make it to special barn: the Circle K barn. Here weave reinvented, remastered, remutated,nd reproduce you to be the cream-of-the-

rop Turkeys that you see before you today- Mutant Turkeys with dreams of ying far,ar away. But the journey hasnt even beguno take ight. All we have done is providedou with the wings, now its your turn to takehe leap of faith.

So go forth young Turkey leaders of theuture, and never stop that ghting spirit. As

ou look back to the other side of the coop,we will all be to hear about your journeysbeyond the undergraduate fence.

Until next time,I remain your featherful correspondent,Turkey

The Creepy Fiends have not only shown service, leadership, and fellowship, but

strength of the love and the strength of the bonds that have genuinely formed betw

the members of this family. Kicking off the family photo shoot trend, inviting non-fa

Goodbye Tiramisu Family ! Goodbye Silver Koalas Family ! Goodbye

Nightgown Ninjas Family ! Goodbye UCLA CKI ! I am too old for this club,

ut the club is still going strong and I have no doubt that UCLA CKI will

ontinue the traditions of service, leadership, and fellowship !

Over the past four years, I have seen a lot of CKIers get Ked out (Circle K language for burned out), but Ihave been fortunate in never losing that re to help others. Hopefully these four pointers will help you kee

your experience in perspective and so you will never lose the re to help.

    1. Be selsh. Yes, the most insane thought for someone devoted to service, but remember this is your time that you are volunteering

and do not forget about your own well-being. If you fall behind because of your devotion to service and you end up needing then isnt that a bit counterproductive? As a mentor of mine would say, We can do everything; we just dont have the time to d

    2. Learn from the past. Fail those two midterms after going to Fall Training Conference and then Masquerade Ball the following

weekend? Pick one; your grades will thank you.3. Empathize. This one is more for the board members. Remember that the other organizations that we work with have their own

priorities and that you cannot possibly be there number one priority after one phone call. Follow ups and being courteous goe

long distance. Never expect full attention and you will be pleasantly surprised.

    4. Do service. I often found myself inundated with the bonding and fellowship. That was when I felt the least passionate, it was ju

too draining hanging out until the sunrise every night. Doing service will always lift your spirit. Having direct contact with the

children at Free Arts for Abused Children or the homeless at West Hollywood Food Coalition will touch your soul. Service is the

    to keeping you going.

am so grateful to have worked with so many of you over the past four years in Circle K. This organization would be nothing without yohe members. Enjoy the fellowship with the others, the leadership opportunities, and most importantly, the great service you provide to t

community. Live to Serve, Love to Serve.
