As we anticipated, the year of 2015 presented challenges across all industry sectors,but also a time for us to reflect on our heritage. The story of our business began110 years ago when the patent for the very first industrial turbocharger was grantedwith early support from ABB. Since then, significant advances in turbochargingtechnology have hugely improved performance and power output of reciprocatingengines. Highlights of our own recent technology developments are documentedover the following pages.

Along with our peers in the industry in 2015 we faced the hurdle of falling fuelprices, heavily impacting all markets, and compounding the dramatic dip in merchantmarine newbuildings. Weakening of the EUR and JPY against the USD broughtadditional dynamics to the market. In the context of this, a further milestone has alsocaused us to review what was possible in 2015; the 125th anniversary of ABB Switzer-land, one of the two roots of the ABB Group.

We continue to believe that bringing our business together with engine builders is the key to new application-specific products and technologies in greater align-ment with the needs of end customers. One example of this in 2015 was the market penetration of the second generation of Power2®. This two-stage turbochargingtechnology will be applied on the world’s most efficient four-stroke diesel engine.The year also saw a Valve Control Management (VCM® )-enabled pilot engine in fieldoperation. We fully anticipate further progress on this in 2016 with key developmentpartnerships now in place. In our Service Business, transitioning from our spare-parts-centric model toward a customized approach with new maintenance con-cepts and upgrades offerings has generated a strong market response, redefiningour role as an OEM.

Many other achievements in 2015 were made possible due to such relationships,shaping the future of our offering. In 2016, new product developments closely influenced by our customers’ insights will be presented to the market.

Looking forward, working closely with engine manufacturers and end customers willcontinue to be essential to ABB Turbocharging as we see industry adjustments and realignment on the horizon. We thank suppliers, partners and employees forsupporting this vision and we thank our customers for continuing to choose us.Your trust in our employees and our many years of technical expertise and industryknowledge enables us to continually push the boundaries of turbocharging innovation.

For our High-Speed product line, againstthe backdrop of a challenging year forEuropean high-speed engine builders, wecontinued to focus on stronger, deeperpartnerships with our customers, suc-cessfully prolonging supply agreementswith a number of major engine builders.We identified a trend toward project-based ordering, in some cases resultingin relatively large unit orders. For exam-ple, projects to provide GE JenbacherJ920 engines with the first generation ofour two-stage turbocharging solution:Power2 550-M. This solution is capableof delivering turbocharging efficiencyapproximately eight percentage pointshigher than a single-stage turbochargerand of enabling an estimated seven per-cent improvement in fuel consumption.

For MTU and GE Jenbacher’s J420-C,we are delivering our TPS high-speedturbocharger, a product that now has an installed base of 50,000 units.

New productsDuring this year also the TPS 44-H wasintroduced, a new robust and compactplatform with high power density enabling

small gas engines in the 500 kW class to achieve highest efficiencies but at thesame time long maintenance intervals,which will ultimately deliver lowest totalcost of ownership for our customers.

In 2015, we also introduced to the market new platforms and applicationsfor the efficiency gains and operationalflexibility that we know engine buildersand operators are seeking. Products tailored to new customer applicationswere commercially released. In one case this resulted in increased enginepower of more than ten percent com-pared to the previous solution for theapplication, and the customer was stillable to achieve engine thermal efficiencyof 43.7 percent. This is just one suchexample of adding value through oursustained drive toward more innovative,segment-specific products.

New technologiesThe advancements with Valve ControlManagement (VCM) were a key highlightof 2015, enabling flexibility of applicationsto take an engine from idling to full loadin half the time. We will now work closelywith key engine builders for further devel-opment activity of this technology.

Market presenceIn order to better serve the high-speeddiesel and gas engine market, we havein 2015 strengthened our presence inthe United States, where the majority ofthe large high-speed engine market islocated, including the two main playersCaterpillar and Cummins. To truly alignour deep knowledge of turbochargingtechnology with the current and expectedfuture market profile, it is important thatwe bring not only know-how, but productdevelopment and assembly to the US.

Our business focus on closer collabo-rations with customers has led to thephase-in of innovative products andtechnologies, currently with seven cus-tomers in the medium-speed market, tosupport their new engine developmentplatforms.

MaK and Caterpillar have markedlyincreased their footprint in China forstate-of-the-art medium-speed engines.This is also creating new opportunitiesfor our own penetration of this market.

Latest productsThe A100 series of turbochargers hasremained in demand for both medium-speed and low-speed applications presenting new opportunities with cus-tomers including Rolls Royce, Wärtsilä,Hyundai, Daihatsu, Yanmar and Cater-pillar.

Adding to the A100 family, last year we introduced the first A100-M axialproducts delivering two A170-M turbo -chargers to the Norwegian navy for asupply vessel and ten A175-M unitsordered for application on spark ignitedgas power plant engines. The A170-Mand A175-M were designed specificallyto meet demand for higher compressorratios with single-stage turbocharging,and to match the special requirements ofeach diesel or gas engine. Their releaseunderlines how our latest turbochargingsolutions are developed to be key tech-nology enablers, in this case, resultingin highest pressure ratios and efficiency,and maintaining or even improving thetrade-off between NOx emissions andspecific fuel consumption.

In addition to demand for innovations inturbocharging technology, there remainsa sustained requirement for power andefficiency combined with reduced fuelconsumption and lower emissions.Always central to our product offering,this is illustrated by first delivery of thepredecessor to the A100 series, theTPL-C, to Hyundai Heavy Industries fortheir largest produced diesel engine theH46/60V in application on a KoreanNavy supply vessel.

Two-stage turbocharging successThe last 12 months also saw key devel-opments announced in two-stage turbo -charging technology. In June, selectionof ABB’s latest generation two-stageturbocharging system, Power2 800-Mwas announced for the new Wärtsilä 31engine, recorded in the Guinness Bookof Records as the world’s most efficientfour-stroke diesel engine. With the highest turbocharging efficiencies andpressure ratios and the potential for six-figure savings on fuel costs, Power2800-M is now leading the way in two-stage turbocharging technology. Thefirst application of Power2 on this newengine will be on a state-of-the-art newgeneration icebreaker vessel to be builtin 2016.

Customer collaborationAs the year ended, the opening of ournewest Service Station in Amman, Jordan, demonstrated the full collabora-tion between ABB’s turbocharging product and service offerings, with anengine manufacturer. The world’s largestpower plant based on reciprocatingengines, located in Jordan was inaugu-rated in 2015 equipped with 76 TPL-Cturbochargers. One of the first powerplants of its type, it will eventually operateon natural gas, thanks to the flexibility of its 38 engines. The new ABB ServiceStation will support the enabling ofuptime to be maximized for the 600 MWplant, and also the smaller power plantIPP4.

Combining our turbocharger expertise with our customers’ engine knowledge has allowed us to develop innovations that deliver highest pressure ratios and efficiency.

Early in 2015, the success of our latest-gener ation turbochargers was recognizedwith the A100-L on the engine of the“world’s largest container ship,” the19,000 TEU China Shipping ContainerLines’ Globe. The A185-L design was fitted to the main engine with ABB-designed turbochargers also on the aux-iliary engines. By spring 2015, MSC hadlaunched a vessel with even larger capac-ity, also equipped with ABB-designedA180-L turbo chargers. Altogether, sincemarket launch in 2009, 2,050 A100-Lturbo chargers have been delivered orspecified.

The contribution of ABB turbochargersto increasing efficiency of container shipsover the last five years has enabled savings of $231 million in fuel costs for our customers, saving 1.7 milliontons of CO2, as well as reducing HFOoutput by half a million tons, for shipsover 8,000 TEU.

Customer focusThe selection at the end of 2015 forABB turbocharging products to be supplied on a major project with theworld’s largest container ship operator,AP Moeller Maersk underlines ourstrength in this market. Since 2010, ABBturbochargers have been delivered to at least 50 percent of all diesel enginepowered container ship newbuilds over8,000 TEU.

Several further examples from 2015illustrated our resolve to create strongercooperations with manufacturers of low-speed engines: the first specification ofABB turbochargers on a MAN GI engine,the two-stroke gas injection dual-fuelengine that first entered service in 2015;and the specification of ABB turbo -chargers on the very first dual-fuel low-speed engine in China, built by WinGD.ABB turbochargers are now applied onall WinGD dual-fuel engines.

With 800 A200-L turbochargers in themarket since the product was launchedin 2013, another milestone for this latest-generation turbocharger was the suc-cess of the A270-L on the first W6X7DFengine from WinGD, representing ourfocus on supporting engine builderswith solutions for increasing operationalflexibility to comply with ever-stricteremissions regulations.

Industry innovationsIn striving to increase the performanceof our products, working with customersto find ways to save energy is impor-tant. As part of a project for MSC todeliver a power turbine generator (PTG)system, the largest that ABB has beeninvolved with, the ABB PTL 3200 powerturbine was delivered. Through convert-ing waste energy to electricity, the sys-tem enables ships to recover up to fourpercent of fuel energy, at the same timeallowing fuel consumption and emissionsto be reduced. Demonstrating innovationfrom ABB’s marine expertise, this firstproven operation of a stand alone wasteheat recovery system in “island mode”permitted the auxiliary engines to beswitched off while the PTG continued tosupply full electrical power to the vessel.

Latest generation productsAs we continue to extend the perform-ance offered by the A100 series of turbo-chargers, we launched at Marintec 2015in Shanghai the A160-L, the smallest,lightest and most compact of the series.Developed based on market require-ments for small-bore two-stroke dieselengines, it is highly efficient and with a pressure ratio of up to 5.0, it is truly a smart performer that also enables IMO Tier III NOx emissions compliance.Listening to our customers’ require-ments to maximize uptime, this productwas developed for easier maintenance,with longer service intervals so operatorscan be assured of their turbochargers’reliability, literally from dry dock to drydock.

New market offeringsAt the same time, ABB unveiled an airoutlet silencer, unique in being the firstproduct available to the market to reducenoise emissions for turbochargers onlow-speed marine engines. It reducesthe noise level of compressed air leavingthe turbocharger and is a key element inABB’s noise reduction packages, nowavailable for A100-L and A200-L turbo -chargers. The abatement of noise emis-sions aboard ships has taken on newsignificance with the 2014 introductionof new International Maritime Organiza-tion SOLAS regulations, and now ABBoffers a package specifically to supportoperators in meeting these regulations.

Low-Speed product line Highlights

The success of our latest-generation turbochargerswas further recognized in 2015, while we also presentedto our customers new product innovations reducingemissions and delivering higher levels of efficiency.

TPR 56 turbochargers in production.

For the rail product line, 2015 was acritical year for standardization of ourVariable Turbine Geometry across themarket. In China, the first locomotivewith VTG was tested at altitude for passenger trains and for double sectionlocomotives. With VTG as the standardturbo charging offering for long-haulapplications, we now offer to the Chinesemarket increased fuel economy byaround two percent and higher flexibilitywith no compromises in a country withlarge variation in ambient conditions. Inthe second half of the year, Kolomna Diesel Mash officially presented theirnew 12D500 engine configuration. It is equipped with two ABB TPR 56-Fturbo chargers with a VTG feature. Thisengine will become the “working horse”for the future long-haul TMH DE doublesector locomotive to be deployed in fareastern Siberia.

Rail operators in India seeking constantlyto lower fleet operating costs, also planto adopt the VTG turbocharging systemfor their long-haul DE locomotives, withhardware testing planned for 2016.

Two-stage turbocharging continued tobe a major highlight in 2015 across mul-tiple industry sectors, and for rail thismeant the phase-in of our first two-stageturbocharging system for commercialapplication. In China, the first firing of alocally designed high-speed engineequipped with Power2 336-H showedpositive results, including increasedpower density at extremely high alti-tudes.

Despite the advances in two-stage turbo-charging, single-stage turbocharging willremain viable, and over the past year, wehave introduced to the rail sector high

specific flow capacity on a single-stageturbocharger. This enables existing loco-motives to be upgraded. The advantagesof this are three-fold: improvement inapplication reliability, reduced operationalcosts by extended durability and reducedinvestment required in fuel costs. Exam-ples of upgrades completed are fromVTC to TPS and VTC to TPR.

The popularity of the TPR prevails and wecontinue to develop in line with marketneeds. Field qualification of the latest,TPR56FV66 will be in 2016, providinghigher pressures up to a pressure ratioof 5.8.

Rail product line Highlights

Market acceptance of Variable Turbine Geometry as the standard turbo charging offering for long-haul rail applications was our focus in 2015, with significant developments in the Chinese market.

Service Business Highlights

Product life cycle careThe general trend of outsourcing themaintenance of industrial equipment toservice providers has reached the marketfor turbocharger service. Through listen-ing to and tuning into our customers’requests in 2015, we were able to bringmore flexibility into our maintenance and service offerings, designed to moreclearly and comprehensively addresscustomer needs.

With a 20 percent year-on-year increasein the number of turbochargers main-tained under our service agreements, wehave made good progress toward ourgoal of better supporting customerswith their cost management while maxi-mizing the performance of their prod-ucts, allowing them to focus more ontheir own business issues. In addition to our well-known Maintenance Man-agement Agreement and Operation Performance Package, we have alsolaunched the Fixed Rate Service Agree-ment designed for tailored scope ofsupport and tailored payment intervals,which, customers are telling us, can bea better way for them to work with us.

As with our Product Business, in ourService Business we are also engagingmore than ever before with enginebuilders, to more fully support enginemaintenance concepts. The objective ofthis is to move toward a “one-stop shop”for customers; enhancing simplicity andreducing complexity for our current andfuture customers.

Service networkAs ever, we constantly review our globalfootprint to ensure the best availabilityof our service engineers for the installedbase of 200,000 ABB turbochargers. In 2015, we opened new service facili-ties in Uruguay and Jordan, and weenhanced our service facilities in Aus-tralia, China, Japan, South Korea,Turkey and the USA.

The success of our Service Business is, of course, determined by those whochoose to work with us. In activelyseeking feedback, we have had confir-mation that technical support and ser -vice ability are two areas of our overallbusiness where customers rate us thehighest.

Turbocharger upgradesInterest in turbocharger upgradesincreased by more than 40 percent in2015 compared to the previous year.Despite modest fuel oil prices, the mainincentive for our customers to upgradetheir turbochargers was still the overallefficiency of their power installations.But also increased operational flexibility,higher power output and lower mainte-nance costs were reason enough toinvest in newer and improved turbo -charger and engine technology.

A report commissioned by ForresterConsulting in 2015 found that ABB turbo-charger upgrades further improveengine performance and reduce fuelconsumption, identifying a 64 percentreturn on investment for a specific powerplant case study analysis. While the bulkof our upgrades work was in powerplants, further upgrades of marine applications took place, with benefitsdemonstrated.

Faced with strong retrofit competition, itproved once again indispensable tocooperate closely with the engine OEMto deliver a tailored and valuable solu-tion to our customers. We have initiatedseveral similar cooperations and willcontinue to do so.

Changing marketsLooking ahead, the cooling of the globaleconomy, overcapacities in merchantmarine and the low oil price is expectedto change the shape of the market forservice, presenting some further chal-lenges. Close ties with application oper-ators and engine builders will remaincentral to our growth in 2016 as we lookto better serve their specific needswhen it comes to optimizing their powerinstallations over the life cycle. Continu-ing our heritage of innovation, furtherwork on developments with integrateddata solutions is planned, providing theopportunity to back up our current offerings to customers.

Close ties with application operators and engine builderswill remain central to our service offerings in 2016.

Technology development Highlights

In technology, we have three differentdirections: developing new functionalitiesand solutions and thus adding value toour customers’ business; product costreduction; and R&D productivity.

The first of these is illustrated by ad vance -ments in Valve Control Management in 2015. This came as a result of an in -creased number of customer develop-ment partnerships. A key highlight of the year was the first VCM-equippedpilot engine going on stream. It is anapplication for combined heat and power generation and runs continuously,providing significant gains in efficiencyand flexibility. This is the first field testVCM installation aiming for serial qualifi-cation of our VCM technology. To devel-op the technology further, we will con-tinue to look for opportunities to widenthe scope of applications.

Another focus area is energy recovery.ABB continues to work on developmentof an electric turbo compounding system,offering customers reduced fuel con-sumption and carbon emissions, whilemaximizing power density.

The Internet of Things offers great poten-tial to improve the serviceability of in -dustrial technologies by connecting sensors for the extraction of operationaldata. ABB Turbocharging is exploringthe potential of digital sensor technologyto enable the remote monitoring of turbo-chargers for improved maintenance andservice offerings to customers.

R&D productivity In order to make a step change in R&Dproductivity, we launched an initiative,aiming to double productivity in develop-ment and qualification of new turbo -charger platforms.

Another highlight demonstrating ourcommitment to pioneering R&D was toreceive the Best Paper Award at the2015 ASME Turbo Expo, the leadingglobal conference for turbomachinery.The paper was titled “The Matching of aVaned Diffuser With a Radial Compres-sor Impeller and Its Effect on the StagePerformance”.

With more than five percent of revenuefrom ABB Turbocharging global investedin R&D, it remains a key focus toenhance functional performance andcost efficiency whilst increasing reliabilityof our products.

Our objective moving forward is to pushthe boundaries of our turbochargingtechnologies, as well as further investinginto testing and simulation technology.

Developments in our VCM solution with key partners was significant in 2015 aswere the further steps taken in new technology areas with enhanced performanceand increased reliability for our customers remaining central to our offerings.

Supply and Value Chain Excellence Highlights

Last year, we focused on setting thebase to optimize the whole value chain,defining how to further improve our supplier performance for customers.Optimization was supported with theplanning and implementation of keyprojects, to once again align our busi-ness with the shape that the market iscurrently taking.

Foremost was the planning and execu-tion of investment projects for new manufacturing technology to shortenthroughput times and lead times, and to further increase flexibility, enabling usto react faster to customer require-ments. To offer competitive products, inmanufacturing attention was given to anumber of areas for increased produc-

tivity. Similarly, across supply manage-ment further major cost savings wereachieved. We have implemented anIntegrated Business Planning Process inorder to improve and stabilize planningover the entire value chain. Anticipatingthe months ahead, we must be able toact proactively to meet changing marketdemands.

We also plan to significantly improveperformance concerning on-time deliv-ery and quality. This will be encom-passed by our new “Zero Defects” initia-tive. Also, following on from the 2015productivity program, a new initiative willbe implemented in 2016 covering theentire value chain, from design, throughsupply management and production to

product application. As markets andexpectations shift, we believe the cor-nerstones are in place for our businessto adapt to these changes.

In 2015, value chain optimization, planning, and implementation of projects were in focus to further improve our performance. Delivering competitive products fasterwill enable us to more flexibly meet customer requirements.

Focusing on customersHighlights

As an OEM, feedback on the quality ofour products and our service is truly what defines us as a market leader. Thisis becoming increasingly important as wemove towards another year of increasingcompetitiveness.

ABB Turbocharging uses a standardizedmethod to measure customer satisfac-tion. In 2015, feedback was gained fromcustomers in 75 countries, with 92 per-cent satisfied and 65 percent pro activepromoters from their experience ofworking with us, an increase year-on-year of four percent.

More detailed analysis reveals that thearea of our business that customers rankthe most highly is technical support withservice quality and on-time delivery alsoranked highly. In addition, high scoreswere given for our lead times and knowl-

edge of the industry and applications.This information is essential for us toknow that customers value and can ben-efit from our experience and understand-ing of the markets in which they operate.We welcome this information, seeking toimprove the results each year.

We also welcome any less positive feed-back and suggestions as these can helpshape our business for the benefit ofmany customers. Our approach is alwaysto conduct a detailed review process to resolve any issues and to provide asatisfactory response to the customer.

Another way in which we are able tomeasure the success of our efforts in2015, is through the supplier awardsreceived. For the third consecutive year,as part of their operation excellence initiative, Caterpillar Marine Power

Systems (MaK) in Kiel awarded a goldlevel Supplier Quality ExcellenceProcess (SQEP) award to ABB TurboSystems Ltd in Switzerland. CaterpillarInc. USA, awarded gold level SQEP toABB Turbo Systems Ltd following abronze award in 2014. For the third con-secutive year Caterpillar Inc. USA alsoawarded their highest level (platinum) toABB Inc. BU Turbocharging US. Highly valued, these awards are a testa-ment to the years of developing strongreciprocal relationships, which we aim toreplicate with all of our customers. Into2016 and beyond, we will continue todraw on these successes and analyze allfeedback to live up to our market-leadingreputation across the industry.

In 2015, feedback was received from customers in 75 countries, with 92 percent satisfied and 65 percent proactive promoters of ABB Turbocharging– an increase year-on-year of four percent.
