Introduction Amberg Engineering Ltd is a Swiss based company specialising in engineering design of underground structures throughout the world. It plans new underground structures and refurbishments, provides site supervision and construction management during implementation, and produces expert reports as well as state assessments of existing structures. Companies within the Amberg Group includes Amberg Technologies Ltd, Hagerbach Test Gallery Ltd, ASIT Ltd and associated companies. Amberg Engineering can therefore offer comprehensive services for large and complex projects, such as the Gotthard Base Tunnel project in Switzerland which is the longest railway tunnel project in the world.

TTI Consulting Engineers is an Australian based company, specializing in trenchless technology. It is one of the few international engineering companies dealing in trenchless technology, microtunnelling, pipejacking, horizontal directional drilling, pipe bursting technology and other trenchless technologies including trenchless rehabilitation of sewer and other services.

Amberg & TTI Engineering Pte Ltd (AETTI) was established in Singapore in 2002 by Amberg Engineering Ltd (AE) of Switzerland and Trenchless Technology International (TTI) Consulting Engineers Pty Ltd of Australia. AETTI provides engineering consultancy and project management services for civil engineering projects with a special focus on underground infrastructure works. To date the company has undertaken consultancy and supervision work relating to construction of underground metro and railway lines, utility tunnels, large underground caverns and trenchless pipe lines. AETTI also provides geotechnical engineering design in both hard and soft ground, encompassing deep excavation, foundation design, slope stability, ground categorization and ground improvement techniques. AETTI is a well established company with a team of dedicated professional staff. AETTI has proven expertise in the design of tunnels and underground structures located in complex environments and difficult geological conditions. In addition to top quality and low maintenance design, AETTI also strives to achieve an optimised and constructible design, which has minimal impact to the environment. AETTI’s offers comprehensive civil and underground engineering services which include planning and design of bored tunnels, mined tunnels, caverns and trenchless installation of pipelines, as well as providing technical and construction supervision. In addition, AETTI can also provide risk management services for these type of projects.

Bored Tunnels

In bored tunnelling works, settlement control is one of the major concerns that needs to be addressed. This is especially true in soft and mixed face ground conditions, where it is difficult to fully predict and interpret the ground, even with boreholes drilled at close intervals. AETTI has the necessary expertise and experience to deal with such challenges and is able to provide solutions and construction advice to our Clients.

Our capabilities for mined tunnel projects include the following:

Mined Tunnels

Mined tunnels are often constructed where there are constraints to both bored tunnelling and cut-and-cover methods, due to reasons such as changing geometry of the tunnel section, mining short stretches beneath busy roads or utilities, and in very hard rock conditions requiring the use of blasting etc. AETTI has the capability to undertake mined tunnel projects in both soft soil and hard rock formations, in an urban or rural setting.

Caverns

Infrastructure systems, hydrocarbon storage, industrial plants, research facilities, hydroelectric power stations, recreational facilities, protective structures, waste disposal facilities and other storage facilities all have a common characteristic. They need a large amount of space. However, large areas on surface are becoming more scarce due to urbanization, resulting in significant acquisition costs. Building a facility in an underground cavern can be the optimal solution to address these high acquisition costs and at the same time meet the requirements of the different facilities. Placing the facility underground will require less land take, reduce the environmental impact and offer a high level of security and protection.

Underground caverns must be designed to meet specific requirements. We work closely with our clients to develop cost effective solutions that suit the various requirements for the underground facilities.

In recent years, trenchless technology has become a preferred choice for constructing utilities such as sewer and water pipelines. Using a trenchless solution will dramatically reduce disruption to traffic flow and damage to existing utilities near the surface. AETTI is a consultant to Singapore Public Utilities Board on a number of their utility projects where the use of trenchless technology is adopted. We provide a full range of professional services including design, project management, supervision and contract administration for these projects, where microtunnels range from 600mm to 2200mm in size through both soft and hard ground conditions. In addition, we also specialise in the design of manholes, launching and receiving shafts, as well as conduct impact assessment of the construction works to nearby existing structures.

Trenchless Technology

Every underground structure deteriorates over time. Therefore, it is important that the state of the structure be periodically monitored and analyzed in order to ensure long term structural safety and serviceability. AETTI has in-depth knowledge to make detailed inspections and assessments of the condition of existing tunnels. We can also utilize our highly sophisticated and accurate laser scanning devices to capture geometrical information for the entire inner surface of the tunnel, as well as identifying hairline cracks and transform the information into high resolution visual digital images through in-house software. The information can be digitally stored and subsequently compared with new scans to check for any change or deterioration of tunnel condition. Tunnel refurbishment and renewal work, if necessary are often done under constraints such as the structure must remain in operation and therefore work can only occur during the night. Careful attention to construction planning, operations and organization is the key to a successful refurbishment project. We strive to provide our clients with innovative and project orientated solutions for the complex problems associated with tunnel refurbishment and management.

Deep Excavations

Deep excavation projects in recent years have become very demanding and challenging especially for those located in soft soil and those carried out in close proximity to adjacent structures and underground utilities. As a result of this, AETTI places great emphasis on developing an innovative design for the temporary earth retaining system in order to provide an optimal solution, that is structurally sound and cost effective.

Our capabilities for deep excavation projects include the following:

• Finite element modelling and analysis (both 2D and 3D)

• Design of temporary earth retaining systems

• Prediction of ground deformation

• Assessment of effect of excavation works on adjacent structures

• Planning for instrumentation system and monitoring

• Instrumentation review and back analysis regarding the behaviour of

the temporary earth retaining systems

Our capabilities for deep foundation projects include the following:

• 3D Finite element modelling and analysis

• Prediction of absolute and differential settlement for foundation systems

• Interpretation of pile load test results and determination of skin friction

and end-bearing parameters for pile design

• Design and analysis of single-pile-group and pile-raft foundations

• Design of vertical and lateral pile foundation in all types of ground

Our capabilities for slope stabilization projects include the following:

• Assessment of slope stability (using both saturated and unsaturated soil

mechanics)

The design of foundations is often complicated by varying ground conditions, such as a sloping rock profile, bouldery soils, under-consolidating soft soils, landfill or cavity zones. AETTI provides customised solutions for each project irrespective of the challenges and complexity.
