always waiting at the window for me, and when she seesme, she gets really excited. She is so cute! We usually startwith a walk around the park, and then we go for a walkalong the river.

3.A: What are you teaching this semester, Sumio?B: Another composition course, unfortunately. What about

you?A: I’m teaching math. But it’s not too bad. I have some really

good students this semester. It makes such a bigdifference.… So, I guess you have to correct a lot ofcompositions.

B: Yeah, that’s the problem. I usually have to bring themhome to check.

A: How long does that take?B: Well, I usually get home at six and then correct

compositions for about two hours. I mean, I like mystudents and they write good compositions, but I really hatecorrecting homework. I’d rather relax in the evening. But

that’s the way it goes, I guess.

A: Do you watch a lot of TV, Jennifer?B: Yeah, I do. More than I should, I guess. I turn on the TV as

soon as I get home, and my dad is always complaining thatI’m a couch potato and spend half my life in front of the TV.And you?

A: Yeah, I watch a lot of TV, too. What do you watch?B: Oh, every day when I get home, I watch the world news to

see what’s happening. Then I watch my favorite show,“Twenty Questions.”

Ms. Tajima: Oh don’t worry. Even though they’ll be small, futurehouses will be more comfortable to live in.

Ms. Tajima: Well, engineers are now looking at how to build cities

on and under the sea because we’re running out ofland space. So in the future, we may live in apartmentson man-made islands or even in underwater homes.

Radio host: That’s incredible! And it certainly sounds moreexciting than a small plastic house!

Ms. Tajima: Yes, it does, doesn’t it? But this won’t happen forsome time because a lot more research needs to bedone. What is going to happen very soon is the all-electronic house.

Radio host: What do you mean by that?Ms. Tajima: Well, that means a house totally controlled by

computers. Computers will make all the decisions ahome owner needs to make. For example, when to turnon the lights, when to water the plants, when to openthe windows, and so on.

Story 1.Alice: I had a kind of interesting day on Sunday.Denise: What happened?Alice: Well, I didn’t have much to do, so I thought I’d go to the

mall and do some shopping. I sat down on a bench becauseI was getting tired when I noticed a wallet under the bench.

Denise: A wallet?Alice: Yeah. I looked inside, and it had lots of money and credit

cards in it. Then I noticed it had the owner’s name andaddress inside it but no phone number.

Denise: So then what did you do?Alice: I had plenty of time, so I took a taxi to the person’s house

and returned the wallet. The man who owned it was reallygrateful. He gave me fifty dollars to thank me. And he paidfor my taxi!

Story 2.

Norman: We had the most amazing day at the theme park last week.Cheryl: Why? What happened?Norman: Well, my friends and I had already gone on all the roller

coasters, so we decided to go on the Big Wheel. It’s a new




ride, and it takes you up very high. We just got to the verytop when suddenly the whole thing stopped.

Cheryl: What happened? Were you OK?Norman: Well, we were all scared, and we didn’t know what was

going on. We found out later that some equipment had

broken, and they couldn’t fix it. Anyway, they startedgetting people out by helicopter.Cheryl: Wow! Then what happened?Norman: We all got down safely. Then some people from the park

management came to apologize for what happened, andthey gave us all a free one-year pass to the park!

Sacha: Oh, no! So then what did you do?Evan: I was going to call for help or something. But can you
