LOGLINE In Tumbledown, a young widow falls for a brash New York academic who barrels into her rural Maine town to scrutinize the circumstances of her late husband’s death. SYNOPSIS Short Years after the death of her folk-singer husband, Hannah (Rebecca Hall) has yet to fully accept her small-town life without him. Then she is approached by a charming New York writer (Jason Sudeikis) intent on penning a biography of her late husband’s life, and Hannah finds herself opening up again. Also featuring performances by Dianna Agron, Blythe Danner, Griffin Dunne, Joe Manganiello, and Richard Masur. Medium In Tumbledown, a young widow (Rebecca Hall), falls for a brash New York writer (Jason Sudeikis) who barrels into her rural Maine town investigating the death of her husband, folk-music hero Hunter Miles (voiced by Damien Jurado). Hannah is scraping her life back together in a cabin at the foot of Tumbledown mountain, attempting to seal every shred of her husband’s life into a biography. When Andrew, an academic who has a different take on Hunter’s life and death, shows up looking for the truth of this mysterious musician, the pair clash. But gradually they find themselves collaborating to craft Hunter’s story, and beginning to write the next chapter of their lives together. Long In Tumbledown, Rebecca Hall plays Hannah, a young widow whose husband Hunter (voiced by Damien Jurado) was a folk singer-songwriter of some repute. She is scraping her life back together alone in a cabin in the Maine woods, attempting to cope with her loss by sealing every shred of her husband’s life into a biography. Andrew, a brash New York academic (Jason Sudeikis) comes barreling into her small town eager to investigate the mysterious circumstances of Hunter's death. Hannah goes on the attack, proclaims that she alone will lay the bricks of her husband’s monument, and drums Andrew out of town. But despite their clashes, Andrew’s understanding of Hunter's work is undeniable, and when Hannah realizes the impossibility of her Herculean task, she swallows her pride and calls Andrew back to Maine to help her write her late husband’s biography. Tempted by the unfettered access to this singer he has long studied, Andrew bids his NY girlfriend (Dianna Agron) goodbye and joins Hannah in her lake house where over the course of a Maine mud season they try to work out the terms of their collaboration, with the ghost of a great love looming over them. Hannah is forced to introduce Andrew to her family (Blythe Danner, Richard Masur), to her best friend who runs the local bookstore (Griffin Dunne), and to protect him from her old high school friend-with-benefits (Joe Manganiello). As they make progress on the book, and their animosity begins to turn to something else, Hannah reveals to Andrew her husband’s recording studio, where they make an unexpected discovery that turns their growing relationship upside-down.

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT – SEAN MEWSHAW Tumbledown has been our mountain to climb for nearly a decade. Desi and I were young lovers in LA when she began writing long swaths of dialogue between a girl from rural New England and a boy from New York, exploring questions about quality of life, weighing the invigorating energy and culture of the city against the inspiring natural spaces and solitude afforded by her native Maine. Tumbledown began as a love-letter to her hometown of Farmington and the tight-knit community that raised her, telling a story about small-town characters without condescending to them. She wrote to honor the loss of a close friend, hoping to discover what kind of courage it takes to forge ahead with your own life after experiencing great loss. Since Desi’s first draft, we've gotten engaged, married, moved to Maine, had a daughter, survived a surgery to remove a tumor from Desi's neck, and - just about a minute ago - had a baby boy. Life was what happened to us while we made plans to make a film. So if we seem giddy to be premiering at Tribeca, it’s not merely that we're proud to show our film at this prestigious festival. Ask any of our long-suffering friends or family: Tumbledown has been at the center of our shared dreams for nearly our entire relationship. It’s been the totem of our faith that in good time, the “little indies that could,” occasionally can. When Desi brought me home for the first time to meet her family – who turned out to include the parents of all of her high school friends and most of the folks who ran stores in town – I felt immediately drawn to the distinctiveness of that world. I had grown up as an expatriate kid in Rome, Italy, and still felt a bit alien when I moved back to the states, so I was charmed by the close community out in the woods that sought “the way life should be.” No surprise then that Desi and I returned to Maine, intending to make a tiny movie about a local girl and the city boy who falls for her. Through years of pushing that dream up the mountain, we earned the support of people who believed in the project's viability on a larger scale, even with a first-time feature director attached. What never materialized were film incentives in Maine that could compete with those of neighboring states, so the indie-financing equation dictated that we shoot this personal, site-specific story a couple hundred miles south. But our creative collaborators dedicated themselves to evoking the essence of the milieu that inspired the story, and we realized that the background could afford to remain slightly less in focus, because we had the great fortune of gathering a cast who brought the foreground to life with particularly wonderful weirdness and vigor. When I met Jason, it was immediately clear he was suited for the role of Andrew: he's one of the sharpest wits around, but possesses serious reserves of sensitivity and intelligence at his core. It was invigorating that Jason felt a deep
Page 4
desire to make something great, and sought to bring a keen focus to his work. Plus, on a set where we had to work fast and furiously, he was wonderfully reassuring, able to keep things light and make the experience fun even when we were under pressure, bone-chillingly cold, or battling a narcoleptic bear. Rebecca joined us right after being put through the emotional wringer in Machinal on Broadway, and she told me she was excited to take on a more lighthearted and hopeful role. She never wanted to lose sight of Hannah’s humor, and aimed to keep her robust and lively throughout. Which was just how Desi had always envisioned the character – a woman who refuses to be crippled by depression; one who uses humor as self defense against the pity of others. Rebecca’s brilliance both on and off camera was a gift to our film, and it was thrilling to watch her billow Hannah's sails with intelligence and soulfulness even while exploring the more playful side of the character. As we rushed to shoot loads of scenes each day, the two of them were expected to nail the humor and the emotional beats with only the quickest rehearsals, often in just a couple takes. I felt so fortunate to be able to rely on Jason's extensive experience as an improviser and Rebecca's career as a stage actor which enabled them both to plug into the moment and fully inhabit the nuances of scene after scene, without the safety net of trying different approaches. We all were flying by the seats of our pants, and these two wear the most agile-winged pant-seats I've ever witnessed. I think of the central relationship in Tumbledown as a love triangle between a man, a woman, and a ghost. Both Hannah and Andrew are obsessed Hunter in their own ways, and I wanted to explore how that shared passion might lead them to take a chance on love with each other. I decided to risk evoking the character of the missing man through his voice and music alone, without flashbacks to the golden days. I hoped this gambit would make the audience long to know more about him; to long for him a bit like Hannah does. This put a lot of pressure on the musician who would embody Hunter, and the prospect daunted many people. Finding our musician - inspired by the mysteries surrounding Jeff Buckley and Elliot Smith, and the voices of Neil Young and Ray LaMontagne - seemed almost as elusive as the fictitious man himself, but when I was introduced to Damien Jurado's gentle, wounded voice shot through with strength, the rugged poetry of his lyrics, and timelessness of his music, I knew we had the potential for greatness. Our film aims to explore grief without striking maudlin notes, and to weave comedy through a story about loss, because humor can reveal so much about our humanity. We aspired to make a movie like our heroes Woody Allen, Richard Linklater, or Noah Baumbach would: one that entertainingly unfolds the relationships between smart, witty people dealing with complex emotional issues. We tried to bring to life a more unusual and complicated dynamic than you'd expect in a conventional romantic comedy, and wanted to explore what happens

when your happily ever after ends far too soon, and you have to find the courage to love when you never thought that muscle in your chest would work again.
