They say the fi rst year of marriage is the hardest. Survive that year and you can survive anything. If these words of wisdom are

truly the case, then I am one lucky girl. As this issue hits the stands, my husband, Trey, and I will have just

celebrated our one-year anniversary. In writing this letter, I asked Trey how he would sum up our fi rst year of marriage. His response: exciting, busy and productive. Well, he is right about that. In the last year, we have had many exciting and productive moments.

Trey completed his master’s degree. I completed Leadership Tulsa and joined the Susan G. Komen Tulsa Affi liate board of directors. We both received promotions at work, taking on new roles and new challenges. And we bought our fi rst home. I’m tired just typing all that! But somehow we managed to weather the storm of events with ease and virtually no confl icts.

To be fair, we did have our “moments,” and you soon-to-be newlyweds will, too. We struggled to fi gure out who would take out the trash. We had both lived alone prior to marriage, so clearly we both were capable of the task, but whose responsibility should it be now? I won that one, making Trey the offi cial “trash man” at our house. As for cooking and cleaning, well, those duties happily fell my way. What can I say? Marriage is about compromise.

Upon refl ecting, perhaps we were just too busy to have any major struggles or confl icts in that fi rst year. Or, more likely, we are so perfectly suited that we can take on life’s biggest challenges with ease — because we have each other.

No doubt, planning a wedding was among those challenges. It was a joy and, in the end, the best day of my life thus far. But the planning also tested our ability to multitask, compromise and handle stress.

Speaking to the many brides out there reading this, I know you, too, have found your soul mate. Rest assured that with this person’s companionship, you will be able to conquer any hurdle that life throws your way.

Some say, if you can make it through the fi rst year of marriage, you can make it through anything. I say, if you can make it through planning a wedding, you’re destined for success! I hope this magazine, chock full of resources, inspiration and advice, will help you along the way.

Congratulations and best wishes,

One down, a lifetime to go

Q: How much time do I need to allot for my photography?

First, it is important that you allow yourself enough time to get ready. Allot at least three hours for your hair and makeup to ensure that you look just the way you want without being rushed. At least 99.9 percent of delays are due to the bride not allotting enough time for getting ready. Second, natural lighting is the most important component for beautiful photos.

Great portraits of the bride and groom take time. We suggest at least one hour with the couple and another 30 minutes with the wedding party. Plan to allow at least an hour and a half for photos and schedule them when there will be plenty of good natural lighting available. Time plus light equal amazing results! Third, consider a “first glance” with your groom before the ceremony. It is a special

and intimate moment when no one is watching. You will both be more comfortable for those sweet “in love” photos that we know you want. Plus, the tradition of not seeing each other until the altar comes from arranged marriages. Take your photos before everything else and while you are fresh and energetic. Don’t forget he is your best friend!

Both Allison and Adam enjoyed not having to worry about any of the details on their wedding day. He is caring and thoughtful. What he LOves mOst abOut her: He loves her smile and how she makes him feel. The color palette evolved from the dresses, with bridesmaids carrying white and ivory bouquets down a sanctuary aisle lined with white orchids, gardenias on the pews and thousands of white, ivory and green rose petals. The bridal bouquet reflected the vibrant personality of the bride, designed with green orchids, flame calla lilies and brilliant roses in shades of salmon to hot pink. favOrite detaiL: J.D. could not decide what to do with his hands during the ceremony. Live in: Tulsa OccupatiOns: Elizabeth and Chris are both attorneys. Chris started his own law firm (Ellison Law Firm PLC). Elizabeth is executive director of the Lobeck-Taylor Foundation and plans to work on the federal court’s conflict panel representing indigent criminal defendants. Weather: Sunny and hot number Of peOpLe WhO attended: 350 hOW they met: Elizabeth noticed Chris on their first day of law school because he was the only man wearing a tie besides the professors. And, of course, he was really cute. Chris remembered Elizabeth from when they took the LSAT in Tulsa. They discussed their love for Tulsa and discovered they had mutual friends, though they themselves had never met. favOrite date: Since they moved back to Tulsa, Chris and Elizabeth have a date every Saturday morning. They go to the farmers’ market, followed by coffee from Café Cubana and breakfast at Old School Bagel and ending with a trip to Biscuit Acres Dog Park with their dogs. What she LOves mOst abOut him: Chris is hilarious, and he makes Elizabeth laugh all the time. Chris lives by the motto “Work hard. Play hard,” and he reminds Elizabeth not to take herself too seriously. What he LOves mOst abOut her: With Elizabeth, Chris discovered that he had been pretending to be someone else for a long time. Something about her helped him to become the person he had envisioned being when he was younger. Thus, what he loves most about her is that she helped him find himself at a time when he was very lost. That, and she’s beautiful, inside and out! cOLOrs: Purple and platinum favOrite detaiL: The ceremony music was very untraditional, but all the songs were meaningful to the couple. What Was unique: The couple went on a family trip to blend their own wine at the Woodhouse Family Vineyards. This wine was served to the guests during the main course of the meal, and each guest signed a magnum bottle for the couple to drink (with friends and family) when they celebrate their 10-year anniversary. her advice fOr Other brides: You don’t have to follow convention. If you want to do something totally different, go for it! three adjectives tO describe the Wedding: Personal, elegant and delectable! hOneymOOn: After taking the bar exam, Elizabeth and Chris took a two-week road trip in California. the engagement: After Chris and Elizabeth finished their law school finals, Chris made up a story that lured her to his house. Earlier that day, he had spread pink roses in the room and left a card. As Elizabeth entered the room, Chris got down on one knee and proposed the moment she looked up from the card. The card ended with “I want only one thing, and it begins with a question.” Elizabeth promptly answered “yes,” and they immediately went to Stonehorse Cafe where they celebrated with family and champagne.

Mother-daughter team Rene Punch and Jerrica Grazier are the women behind the magic created by Mom and Me Events Inc. From catering to fl oral design, these women do it all with ease.

insPiration: “Many times we are asked to design something that has the elegant setting and a ‘rustic’ feel, and that is where our inspiration comes from for this tablescape. Our desire is to bring in the elegance with fl orals in oranges, blues and greens and then provide a comfortable sit-down table with the teak wood chairs and chargers, colorful dishes and smoke glasses. A bit of candlelight adds drama to any setting and just the right touch of romance and sparkle that any table needs. We always try to ‘think outside of the box’ and create something that is traditional and creative.” - Rene Punch and Jerrica Grazier

As a newlywed herself, Sasha Malchi, owner of Guest Events, knows the importance of details. That’s exactly why she

strives to make certain each bride’s day is planned to perfection, from the food to the place cards. Here is a look at the

designer’s take on a “modern whimsy” bridal shower.

insPiration:“I love to mix and match modern with vintage when possible . . . the always classic black and white color combination

provides the perfect backdrop for pops of color like pink and green. Adding vintage shapes like baroque frames and

milk glass urns and pairing patterns of damask with polka dots help to create a stylish soiree.” - Sasha Malchi

aftereverhappily

and they lived

WRITTEN BY Andrea Leitch

Wedding planning MAY BE OVER, BUT NOW IT’S TIME TO TURN A HOUSE INTO A HOME. HERE, THREE NEWLYWED COUPLES SHARE HOW THEY MERGED THEIR INDIVIDUAL TASTES INTO A NEW STYLE OF THEIR OWN.

from this day forward

One of the couple’s favorite wedding gifts is a personalized Bible inscribed with their names.

Kimberly says they chose a light blue shade for the pillows and rug to compliment the darker, chocolate-colored leather furniture. “The living room serves as a perfect reflection of our two styles – functional leather furniture and end tables from Jean combined with colors and fabrics of my choice,” she says.

The glass coffee table from Pottery Barn is not only a favorite piece of furniture for Harry Connick Jr. (their golden retriever named for their favorite musician) to lay against, but the couple also use it to display a conch shell they found during their honeymoon in Turks and Caicos.

For a personal touch, Kimberly bought these marble coasters with images of the University of Oklahoma from Antique Garden, one of her favorite shops in Norman, Okla.

The Lópezes are organized and minimalistic in décor, so they keep few, but memorable objects around them, including these photo albums of their travels together.

Kimberly and Jean are both fans of jazz music, which is why their first date was at a Harry Connick Jr. concert, where they also met the Grammy Award-winning artist. Since then, the couple have collected posters from concerts they’ve attended, along with memorabilia of their favorite musicians.

The SchlipfsAlthough kendall Schlipf, 24, and her husband, Owen,

24, met during their early years at Oklahoma State University, they didn’t realize they were meant for each other until they started spending time together in the same social circle as upperclassmen.

The couple have remained inseparable ever since, and they recently celebrated their six-month wedding anniversary in their newly decorated home.

Kendall says that although her preference for bright, bold colors differed from Owen’s preferred colors of khaki, blue and green, they were able to combine her colorful style with his taste for simplicity and comfort.

“We were lucky that we needed to buy some furniture, so that stayed neutral and normal in size, color and texture,” Kendall says. “Then we used my love for color with accent wall pieces and pillows that incorporated color and patterns.”

They plan to redecorate their kitchen, and Kendall says the process has been a good opportunity to learn to decorate with each other’s likes and dislikes in mind.

“The best part about it is we can pick out everything together – paint, countertops, appliances, etc. – making it ‘our’ style and not just Owen’s style or my style,” says Kendall.

The LópezesGood things come when helping others, which is

exactly what happened for kimberly López, 29, and her husband, Jean, 26.

In 2002, the couple met at the University of Oklahoma when they served together on a campus event committee for the Children’s Miracle Network.

They wed in 2008 and bought a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home in Jenks, with furnishings that refl ect a culmination of form, function and style.

“We are both extremely organized and somewhat minimalistic when it comes to design, so in a sense, we share the same tastes for home décor,” Kimberly says. “Because we have such similar taste, many of our pieces worked well together.”

She says her taste for modern luxury “with a cozy touch” paired well with Jean’s style of “timeless, clean and functional design with a look for durability.”

They combined their best pieces from each of their former homes, along with new items and textures, to fi t within the country-cottage style.

“Our home, in terms of decorating, is a continual work in progress,” Kimberly says. “Together we created a ‘wish list,’ and now that we have most of the essentials, we are enjoying adding personal touches and artistic décor.”

Faith is important to Kendall and Owen, so they keep their Bibles and Bible study materials in their “most lived-in” room. Kendall has collected the wall crosses as gifts from her family for three years.

Owen’s mother made their window curtains with a hunter green fabric, which he chose to compliment the khaki-colored paint in the living room.

A framed photograph of the couple, a wedding gift from one of Owen’s sisters, was displayed at their wedding and signed by guests.

Kendall used wedding gift cards to purchase colorful pieces for their home, including this yellow terra-cotta vase from Pottery Barn. Other décor, including a bouquet of brightly colored flowers, creates a vibrant and inviting room.

The wood coffee tabletop is a loan from Kendall’s aunt until they find a replacement. “I feel like a little piece of her is at our house with us,” Kendall says. “It’s more home-like.”

To balance their taste for different color palettes, Kendall and Owen combined their styles. “There are sparks of color through accent pillows … combined with more neutral-colored furniture and wall colors,” Kendall says.

The NoelsNewlyweds Tamara, 24, and Chris Noel, 27, both grew up in

Tulsa and attended Bishop Kelley High School, but it wasn’t until a weekend at Grand Lake when they met and instantly fell in love.

For their new life together, the couple decided to forgo buying a house near their offices in downtown Tulsa, and instead, they bought a new home in south Tulsa.

When it came time to move in, Tamara says she had no concerns about merging her Old World décor with Chris’ modern and functional furniture.

“I knew that we would be able to decorate our house in a way that fit both of our styles,” Tamara says. “Chris gave me free

reign to decorate as I wanted to, but I kept his style and tastes in mind.”

She decorated the downstairs in warm browns and modern pieces from local furniture shops, such as I.O. Metro, while Chris made the second living room upstairs a “man cave” that includes a brown leather sectional with four reclining seats, a mini-fridge and three televisions mounted on the wall.

Now that they’ve finished decorating their 5-bedroom, 3-bath home, Tamara says they are pleased with the result: a casual, modern home featuring their individual styles as well as their new style together.

from this day forward

“We love the openness of our kitchen and living area because it is ideal for entertaining,” Tamara says. “Whether it is just the two of us or we have a group of friends over for dinner, this space allows us to cook, eat, watch TV and catch up on our day.”

Chris is a former professional golfer who continues to play in national golf tournaments. A few of his golf trophies, including the center silver plate from a 2009 Cedar Ridge golf tournament in Tulsa, are displayed in their kitchen.

Tamara bought this ladder bookcase made of poplar wood with an espresso-stained finish from Target. She decorated it with photos from their wedding weekend and a few of her favorite lifestyle books. Since the couple honeymooned in Napa Valley and one of their stops was at the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, they received bookends shaped like the famous bridge from Restoration Hardware as a wedding gift.

A plush, dark brown and white polka-dotted chair with matching pillows from I.O. Metro compliment the soft, neutral-colored sofas from Mathis Brothers Furniture.

This bar cart was a wedding gift from Pottery Barn, along with the wine and whiskey decanters. A couple of wine stoppers have an “N” monogram, and the wine bottles on the cart were brought back from Napa Valley.

When the Noels bought the south Tulsa house, they decorated their home with new furniture and items they chose together. “We wanted our home to have more of ‘our’ stuff rather than ‘this is mine’ or ‘this is yours,’” Tamara says.

Tamara brought this Old World-inspired wall frame from her previous home. The photos are a few favorites from their wedding.

Jeffery moore9.26.09

Fifteen years ago, Jeffery and Tristan were concentrating on only one thing: being kids. But even as kids, they could not keep from noticing the bond they would soon build after meeting each other at Jeffery’s mother’s dance studio. Today, it is obvious why this bond was so strong from the beginning. For fi ve years, the couple took their relationship to the next level and dated, becoming best friends. Then, on a date to Fleming’s Prime Steakhouse and Wine Bar at Utica Square, Tristan walked up to a table embellished with two dozen roses. After dinner, Jeffery handed her a gift, warning her not to get too excited, that it was not what she expected it to be. Tristan unwrapped the present to fi nd a digital camera. After snapping a few pictures, Jeffery told her to go back through the camera and look at all the photographs. It was then that Tristan caught the fi rst glimpse of her ring in a picture Jeffery had taken, and as she looked up from the camera, she found her future husband on one knee. Six months later, on a beautiful September day, the two best friends shared their fi rst kiss as a married couple at the Emerald Falls Golf Club in Broken Arrow. After 15 years of getting to know each other, of Tristan enjoying Jeffery’s easygoing and fun personality and Jeffery learning to love the way Tristan fi ts perfectly in his arms – after 15 years of being friends growing in love, the couple made the strongest vow of friendship on September 26, 2009.

The beautiful wedding was simple, but unique touches were added throughout the event, making it the Moores’ very own day. The colors of the wedding were black, white and turquoise, and a zebra pattern was added to add style and fun. Each of the bridesmaids dresses included the zebra pattern. Even with all the extra touches like the zebra print, Tristan made sure not to get stressed about the little details of the big day. After the ceremony and reception held at the golf course, the couple honeymooned in Mexico, a sure way to relieve any bit of stress that might have been built up during the planning of a wedding for 150 guests.

Peter alexander fleisher

Charles and Jeanette Dickerson are proud to announce the engagement of their daughter Kristin Mari Dickerson to Peter Eric Alexander Fleisher, son of Ilona Sandrey and Duane Grovier, and Martha Hyde and Christian Fleisher. The couple met on a blind date at Mayfest in 2007. After nearly two

years of courtship, Peter proposed. The two were scuba diving when Peter got on one knee, scribbled “marry me?” on his dive slate, and with tears of excitement Kristin nodded “yes.” The two are planning a family ceremony for January 16th, 2010, in

Peter’s hometown Islamorada, Florida.

Colton hayes rohr

Nearly a year ago, Colton Rohr took his girlfriend, Megan Owens, on a romantic picnic date to celebrate their anniversary. The special occasion began at Woodward Park, where they enjoyed a delightful picnic followed by a hands-on art experience at Purple Glaze. As their date went on, Colton and Megan strolled the pedestrian bridge on Riverside and talked about their future life together and all the dreams they had for their lives. Then, he proposed. Down on one knee, Colton asked the love of his life and good friend of five years to marry him.Little did Megan know that when she met Colton

through Mpact Student Ministries, they would become good friends and on the day of his marriage proposal, her response to his proposal would be, “Abso-freakin-lutely.” From that day, it took Colton and Megan only six

months to plan their wedding. Before they said “I do,” the groom spent his

bachelor party with the guys and had a bonfire, while the bride spent her bachelorette party with the girls and ate sushi at Fuji. With approximately 500 guests and a unique

setting, Colton and Megan could not have asked for a lovelier day to join in matrimony. Although the days preceding their wedding

ceremony were filled with cloudy gray skies and dreary rain, the weather turned beautiful on the day of their wedding. The wedding ceremony featured decorations in

black, ivory and red and was held at The Assembly at Broken Arrow. The reception took place at the groom’s parents home, where the bride and groom hosted a dinner with guests. Fun, joyful and unique are just three words that the

bride and groom used to describe their wedding-day experience. Fun, because two good friends united as one amongst their family and friends. Joyful, because this special day will always be an occasion to remember. Unique, because Colton and Megan decorated their stage with three doors and a picket fence — an element that became their favorite detail of the wedding.Colton works for Paschal Studios as a decorative

concrete worker and Megan works for Country Financial Insurance. What Colton loves most about Megan is how she

loves people so much, while Megan loves that her husband has amazing character and integrity. Following the wedding, Colton and Megan

celebrated their honeymoon on a cruise to the Western Caribbean.

Before she had even met Robert, Jennifer was trying to find an excuse to cancel their blind date. After all, being the diehard Cubs fan that she is, Jennifer thought she would never be able to date a White Sox fan like Robert. But after their first date at Aguave, when Robert brought her flowers, opened all the doors and, later that night, spent six hours on the phone with her, Jennifer decided she might have been very wrong in thinking they would not be a good match. On April 18, 2008, Robert “Ring Popped” the big question. Robert took Jennifer to see

her favorite team, the Chicago Cubs, where they sat on the front row behind home plate. After Robert passed Jennifer some Cracker Jacks, she soon began searching for the toy inside. After pulling out a Ring Pop, Jennifer unwrapped the candy and found a paper scroll that read “Jenny, will you marry me?”Over the next three and a half months, the couple’s love for each other, as well as the

love for their hometown baseball teams, was incorporated into the wedding planning and the wedding itself. The boys took their bachelor party to Chicago, where they watched a baseball game and partied downtown in the city. Also at the reception, which was held at the Tulsa Elks Lodge, place cards were used that looked like tickets to a White Sox or Cubs baseball game. The favors were pint glasses with the couple’s names, wedding date and a monogrammed “C.” Inside the glasses were peanuts and Cracker Jacks tied with a ribbon that read “Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jacks.” Of course, Cubs or Sox was written in the background of the ribbon. But it was the main event, the ceremony held at Christ the King Catholic Church, that

brought about 240 of Robert and Jennifer’s friends and family together, regardless of their allegiance to the Cubs or White Sox. Black, white, yellow, navy blue and green were used throughout the wedding. The couple incorporated Scottish tradition into the ceremony, including Scottish kilts for the men and a bagpipe player. It was on this day, Aug. 8, 2008, when Robert scored a homerun as Jennifer said “I do.”

It might sound a bit cliché to say “there were fireworks all around” in a wedding magazine, but when Whitney and Todd first met, this cliché was very much a reality. Whitney’s grandfather owned a fireworks distribution business, and the couple first met at

a fireworks tent. Little did they know that this initial meeting would ignite a lifelong bond of love and friendship.Whitney and Todd had actually known each other as kids, because Whitney’s mother and

both of Todd’s parents were classmates at Beggs. But it wasn’t until mutual friends decided they would be a good match that the two started dating. Soon, Todd was leading Whitney through a scavenger hunt with the grand prize being a

proposal. About 18 months later, on June 6, 2009, the couple tied the knot in front of 225 of their family and friends. The elegant black, silver and red wedding was held in Helmerich Hall at Gilcrease

Museum. Handmade pieces made this union unique. All of the bridal party dresses were made by Whitney’s mother. When Whitney found that she wanted details from three different wedding dresses, her mother decided she could combine them into one. Whitney’s dress was truly one of a kind. The dresses were not the only pieces that helped to incorporate family into the wedding.

Whitney’s sister Amber is a wedding photographer and has captured cherished moments in several weddings. With this experience, she was the perfect choice for the couple’s wedding planner. Adding even more of a unique touch to the day, Amber took two pictures of a red rose and enlarged and framed the photos. She then used them as backdrops in place of large floral arrangements for the ceremony. The art now hangs in Whitney and Todd’s home. The whole family helped prepare for the big day. Whitney’s aunts helped with the bridal

party’s makeup. Whitney’s aunt Nancy, who works at Innovations in Jenks, did the bridal party’s hair. But the event that brought the two families together was when Todd and Whitney said

“I do.” With those two words, guests could almost see the fireworks all around that had sparked the beautiful marriage.
