TERM 1 Week 2
GOOD COUNSEL
PRIMARY SCHOOL
5th February, 2019
Dear Parents/Carers,
As we enter Week 2 of the school year, we
begin our teacher/parent sessions. These
sessions are an important to attend if you
can possibly make the time’s set out in the
newsletter. Teachers will outline class
sessions expectations, homework
information, discuss key learning areas
and give an opportunity for parents/carers
to ask questions of the child’s teacher. All
meetings will either take place in the
classroom or theatrette (middle floor
beside the library). Handouts will be
provided to families if you are unable to
attend the session.
Communication between school and home
is a key to every child’s success at school.
The school will communicate in various
ways; Seesaw; paper notes; newsletter
(hard copy or on the web); Parent Portal
(instructions attached) and message alerts.
Digital forms of communication of course
do not replace the need for face to face
visits to school but hopefully assist parents/
carers in our busy worlds.
Thankyou to all families for making an
effort to ensure their students started
school last week in correct uniform.
Please ensure students shoes are ‘all
black’ - should not have white soles or if
they do please colour the white in with a
black paint pen.
All students have started classes with a
positive attitude and have settled into their
learning routines. Well done to all!
I have included an excellent article from
Michael Grose’s Parenting Ideas related to
starting the new school year. It could have
some helpful tips:-

the most of the fresh start and make this year
your child’s best year ever at school:-
1. Commit to your child going to
school every day on time - One of
the most important things you can do
to ensure your child has a bright future
is to make sure he or she goes to
school every day and gets there on
time.
2. Help kids start each day well - A
good night’s sleep, a healthy breakfast
and some words of encouragement
from you will help set a positive tone
for a day of learning.
3. Establish work & study habits - The
most successful students are those
who develop regular study habits that
suit their lifestyle, their study style and
their school’s expectations. Find out
the work expectations from your child’s
school and help them establish a work
routine that matches.
4. Make sure your child gets enough
sleep - Many children are sleep-
deprived, which impacts on their
wellbeing and their learning. A good
night’s sleep consolidates learning, as
well as assisting future learning.
Children need between 10-12 hours of
sleep each day. Help kids get
sufficient sleep by having a regular
bedtime and get-up time each day.
Have a 45 minute wind-down time
each night, and remove screens and
mobile phones from bedrooms.
5. Insist kids exercise - The old saying
about ‘a healthy body and a healthy
mind’ is so true. Exercise releases the
chemicals needed for learning and
wellbeing. Health professionals
recommend a minimum of 60 minutes
of exercise per day for kids of all
ages.

Volunteers are a vital part of the tuckshop service.
Regular volunteer support is a great way to get involved with your child’s schools and meet new
friends. You will gain food handling experience, and of course your child will love to see you working at ‘their’
school.
Volunteer hours and duties are flexible. You may wish to help out one day a week, or you may only be Able to help for a few hours each fortnight. Any help you are
able to give would be appreciated.
If you are interested in helping out, please drop in and see Linda or return the tear off slip below.

Deepest Sympathy to our Counsellor
Carmel and family for the loss of her
father.
Beginning School Mass...
Parents and extended family are invited to join with us for our School Eucharistic
Liturgy on Friday 8 February 9:30am at Mother of Good Counsel Church.
We celebrate the commencement of the school year, as well as welcome our Preps
and the new school staff and students who joined us in 2019. The School Captains,
Student Councillors and Colour House Captains will be receiving their badges during
this time.
A Creed to Live By...
Don’t undermine your worth by comparing yourself to others. It is because we are
different that each of us is special.
Don’t set your goals by what other people deem important. Only you know what is
best for you.
Don’t take for granted the things closest to your heart. Cling to them as you would
your life, for without them, life is meaningless.
Don’t let life slip through your fingers by living in the past or the future. By living your
life one day at a time, you live up all the days of your life.
Don’t give up when you still have something to give. Nothing is really over till the
moment you stop trying.
Don’t be afraid to admit that you are less than perfect. It is this fragile thread that
binds us together.
Don’t be afraid to encounter risks. It is by taking chances, that we learn to be brave.
Don’t dismiss your dreams. To be without dreams is to be without hope; to be with-
out hope is to be without purpose.
Don’t run through life so fast that you forget not only where you’ve been, but where
you are going.
Life is not a race, but a journey to be savoured, every step of the way.

Yours in Catholic Education,
Maria Caltabiano—Mrs C APRE/APA/SEL
Above: Welcome to GCPS to our new students in Years 1—6 who were present on Friday to receive their certificates following the
Australia Day Assembly. Below: Congratulations Maxine—recipient of the Golden Mop and Bucket from Principal Liam Kenny upon
retirement. Then it was all the way to the top, for just a moment, before clocking off after an amazing 23 years. Thank you!
School Captains & Student Councillors presented the first Prayer Assembly on Friday. Thanks for being punctual and organised.
6 Focus on being friendly - Schools are very social places requiring
kids to negotiate many different social situations each day.
Encourage kids to be open and tolerant; to be friendly; to be
sensitive to others; to be involved in plenty of activities and to be
social risk-takers.
7 Develop self-help skills - Successful students are often well
organised, self-directed and self-motivated. Such skills as packing
school bags and organising after school schedules can be great
lessons that impact how they perform at school.
Make the most of the opportunity by focusing on two or three areas and
you’ll find that the rest will fall into place.
PARENTS & FRIENDS
Next Tuesday 12 February at 7.00pm, our Parents & Friends AGM will be
held in the Theatrette. The P&F Executive and a small but willing band of
workers offer their time in a special way for all at Good Counsel Primary.
The role of P&F is to assist with parent engagement activities and
participate in social events such as catering at discos, games nights and
sporting carnivals.
Regards
Liam Congratulations………
