1.8 Discuss whether professional engineers should be certified in the same way as doctors or

lawyers.

Answers

Yes, he or she should be Certified with the same as Doctors and Lawyers are. Engineer makes

logic of each and every thing and perform a job in a best and appropriate way. He is a

competition for Doctors and lawyers. The passion of new generation is increasing day by day

towards Engineering. Because Engineer is a person who is making things easy for peoples. So he

should be Certified! However, there are some advantages and disadvantages (with professional

certification) :

Advantages

a) Certification is a signal to employers of some minimum level of competence.

b) Certification improve the public image of the profession.

c) Certification may increase the status of SE and attract particularly able people into the

profession.

Disadvantages

a) Certification is expensive and will increase costs to individuals and organizations.

b) Certification does not guarantee competence merely that a minimum standard was

reached at the time of certification.

c) Certification tends to lead to protectionism where certified members tend not to protect

others from criticism.
