Tait was acting as both a vendor and purchaser at the Inglis Australian Weanling and Broodmare Sale and felt the auction house should be commended for the depth in the buying bench on hand.

“We brought ten horses here - seven foals and three mares - and they all sold, with some of them reasonably above expectations and that was at all different levels,” Tait said.

“The thoroughbred economy in Australia is the envy of the rest of the world and obviously this is about people trying to restock.

“We have end-users here as well, buying foals to race and mares to breed-to-race, but it is largely a commercial market, which is booming.

“Magic Millions was a great sale, as was Inglis Easter. Melbourne Premier was also a really good sale.

“We sold some horses very well at Classic, too, so across the board the prospects are pretty good and hopefully if the general economy keeps going, then I think the horse economy will as well.”

Meanwhile, Tait’s highest-priced purchase, the Coolmore-consigned Fast And Sexy, won three races and also finished third in the ATC Champagne Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) before being retired to stud.

She is one of five winners for She’s Alluring (Lure), who is a half-sister to the stakes winner Hillfa (Danehill). She was catalogued as Lot 564.

On the acquisition of Fast And Sexy, Tait said: “Fastnet Rock is already becoming a good broodmare sire and, in time, he will become a great broodmare sire.

“She is Group 1-placed as a two-year-old and had a number of wins in Sydney on top of that, so those ones are hard to get and we are really happy to get her.

“She is reasonably unexposed at this point in time and No Nay Never is off to a phenomenal start in the northern hemisphere. Let’s hope he does the same here.”

Tait, who also purchased Count Your Fingers (General Nediym) from Coolmore for $100,000, said a mating for Fast And Sexy this year had not yet been made.

Purchased from Godolphin in 2017, Twin Hills Stud is this year standing Smart Missile (Fastnet Rock), Odyssey Moon (Snitzel)

and newcomer Denman (Lonhro), who relocates from Darley to the Cootamundra-based farm.

Coolmore’s Colm Santry echoed Tait’s comments about the strength of the breeding stock market in Australia.

“It has been very strong for the nice mares but it is getting a bit pointy at the top end, particularly if you want to buy these nice young mares,” Santry said.

Santry’s comments came after he purchased the equal highest-priced lot in yesterday’s final session, the juvenile winner Aljawzaa (Exceed And Excel), who was bought to support Coolmore’s new dual Group 1-winning huttler Saxon Warrior (Deep Impact).

Consigned by Yarraman Park Stud as Lot 477, Aljawzaa is a sister to the stakes-winning Eximius and is in foal, with a September 3 service date, to Darley’s Group 1-winning first season sire Impending (Lonhro) - her first year at stud.

“We valued her around that ($200,000) mark. It is a very fast family with Canny Lad and Dehere (the dam sires) and we have got an early pregnancy to Impending,” Santry said.

Saxon Warrior, who will stand for $24,750 (inc GST) in his first southern hemisphere season later this year, won the Racing Post Trophy (Gr 1, 1m) as a two-year-old before claiming the 2000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) at three.

Shadowbrook reaches High mark for High Chaparral mare

Coolmore also sold winning mare High Hostess (High Chaparral), who is in foal to high-profile Group 1-winning first season sire Merchant Navy (Fastnet Rock) for $200,000, as Victorian breeder Norm Hassell made his highest-priced mare purchase yet.

Trading under Shadowbrook Bloodstock, Hassell runs a pre-training business near Cranbourne but is increasing his broodmare band in both size and quality, while he breathed a sigh of relief after securing High Hostess late yesterday.

“We are reasonably new to the game. We have only had a small band of broodmares, with six at the moment, and we are wanting to better our broodmare band and, of course, something has got to go off the bottom for something to go on top and this little purchase definitely goes on top,” Hassell said.

“We are based ten minutes from Cranbourne Racecourse in Victoria. We have been there for 12 years where we have a small farm where we do pre-training via the water walker and a lot of rehab for horses all types.

“But we are not getting any younger and we want to downsize that side of the operation and upsize the breeding.”

Offered by Coolmore as Lot 590, High Hostess is a sibling to five winners being out of the stakes-placed mare Abeel Hostess (Zabeel).

Hassell revealed he sent a mare to Coolmore’s Merchant Navy last year and had belief in the Group 1 winner’s future as a stallion.

“(Being in foal to Merchant Navy) prompted us to some extent because we have got a good mare at home and she actually slipped a Merchant Navy. We are very keen to go to him with that mare and as it turns out (High Hostess) is a terrific mating,” he said.

“She is young and we will have a lot of good times with her, I’m sure.”

Hassell, who ‘was not shocked by the price’, has not made a decision on a mating for this year for High Hostess.

He said: “You don’t make decisions on ‘race day’, they say.”Coolmore was the leading vendor at the select race fillies and

broodmare session, selling 24 lots for $1,502,000 at an average of $62,583.

Coolmore’s Tom Moore said: “The competitive trade at all levels over the past two days really highlights the strength and depth of the Australian market.

“Overall, the results for us and our clients are very pleasing and we’d like to thank all those who bought from us and wish them luck with their new purchases.’’

Yarraman Park Stud was leading vendor by average, selling 15 lots at an average of $67,750.

Arthur Mitchell of Yarraman Park said: “These sales are quite strong, very strong really. There’s plenty of people here to buy horses at all points of the market. It’s good.’’

Almanzor gains support with new mares for Cambridge Stud

Meanwhile, Henry Plumptre rounded out a successful week in Sydney buying mares on behalf of Cambridge Stud by landing the Group 3-winning mare Diamond Earth (Choisir), who is in foal to Coolmore shuttler Churchill (Galileo), for $160,000.

Diamond Earth was purchased to support Cambridge Stud shuttler Almanzor (Wootton Bassett) this year, while another acquisition - Danahere (Dehere) - is also bound for a date with the stallion after Plumptre secured her for $135,000.

Catalogued as Lot 545, Diamond Earth is a half-sister to the stakes-placed Halle Rocks (Fastnet Rock) while her dam, Face Of The Earth (Strategic), was also stakes-placed and is a half-sister to the Tony McEoy-trained Group 1 winner Bring Me Roses (High Chaparral) and Group 3-winning sire Face Value (Red Ransom).

She is the dam of two winners, while the Edinburgh Park-consigned Diamond Earth has an unraced two-year-old filly by Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) and a yearling colt by another Coolmore-based sire in Vancouver (Medaglia d’Oro).

“She will got to Almanzor and she is the right type of mare for him with an active family with a lot of fillies in it, which is really important,” Plumptre said.

Plumptre was pleased with the mares Cambridge Stud were able to buy, including Kelly O’Reilly (O’Reilly) and Untamed Diamond (Snitzel) for $200,000 each at The Chairman’s Sale.

Kelly O’Reilly will be covered by Cambridge Stud’s new Tweenhills Stud shuttler Roaring Lion (Kitten’s Joy) this year.

Cambridge Stud spent $445,000 on four mares at the race fillies and broodmare session of the Australian Broodmare Sale, which was under budget.

“The market is very discerning with a premium for the right mares who are in foal to the right stallions but you pay a penalty for the mares with late covers,” Plumptre said.

“It is just a reflection of the yearling market really.”

Webster hails May days for Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale

This year’s revamped Inglis Australian Broodmare and Weanling Sale saw 51 fewer mares offered for the latest renewal of the select session, but the year-on-year average of $42,199 was up 27 per cent and the median of $30,000 was up 36 per cent.

The figure comes after the elite The Chairman’s Sale average was up 65 per cent for the 59 lots offered.

“There is a lot of confidence in the market, particularly at the top end, so that has no doubt helped The Chairman’s Sale, but I think this year even the middle market at Premier, at Easter and on the Gold Coast (yearling sales) has held up pretty well and that has encouraged (breeders) to reinvest,” Inglis managing director Mark Webster told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“When you look at the major buyers at this sale, a lot of them have got stallions going to stud and they want to present their stallions with quality mares.

“We have got Yu Long as the leading buyer of mares at this sale in the past two days with them all heading to Grunt.

“If you look through the major buyers’ list, it is a positive that they are investing in stallions and they are investing in mares to back them up, so that all inspires confidence.”

YuLong Investments bought five mares for a total of $602,000 to be leading buyer by aggregate ahead of Cambridge Stud, while Hong Kong’s Ben Kwok spent $410,000 on ten mares.

Last year’s sale was held straight after the Australian Easter Yearling Sale but a large The Chairman's Sale catalogue and a fatigued buying bench saw an under-par result, prompting Inglis to make changes to the date and format in 2019.

“From our end, too, what we think what has helped as well. Last year was a pretty healthy market too, but clearly the timing didn’t help us selling straight after Easter,” Webster said.

“I think having the gap between Easter and this sale has really helped. It has allowed the vendors and buyers get ready, come in refreshed and there were plenty of buyers even through to the last ten lots.”

The strong broodmare and weanling sale in Sydney now sets the scene for a competitive market to take place at the Magic Millions Gold Coast National Sale later this month.

Inglis’ focus now switches to the Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association Scone Yearling Sale on Sunday and the Great Southern Sale in June.

10,000 for Outback BarbieTony Gollan has already mapped out a new campaign for Outback Barbie, who will tackle the Doomben 10,000 on Saturday after being scratched due to the heavy track at the Gold Coast last weekend. Meanwhile, the trainer was due to meet with Zoustyle’s owners to finalise the gelding’s plans late yesterday. There are two options for Zoustyle with a 10,000 start and then the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1350m) and the Stradbroke Handicap (Gr 1, 1400m) or a three-year-old handicap at Doomben on Saturday week followed by the Healy Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) on June 23. “At this stage I am leaning to the Healy Stakes option. Zoustyle is only three and we have always said we would manage his career with what is best for him,” Gollan said.

Distance test for Nature StripRod Lyons, co-owner of Nature Strip (Nicconi), believes the best is yet to come from The Galaxy (Gr 1, 1200m) winner as he returns to 1200 metres in the Doomben 10,000 (Gr 1, 1200m) on Saturday. "He’s getting bigger and stronger and he’s probably 50 kilograms heavier from this time last year," Lyons told Racing.com. "Both Robert (Smerdon) and Darren (Weir) that had him beforehand said he’d be even better as a four and five-year-old so it’s pretty exciting thinking about Saturday." Nature Strip is the $3 co-favourite with All Aged Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) runner-up Osborne Bulls (Street Cry) for the $800,000 contest at the weekend.

Experience to helpOh Five GloryCo-trainer Peter Hulbert is hoping Oh Five Glory (Unencumbered) can learn with experience as she seeks to build on her Dalrello Stakes (Listed, 1000m) third in the Champagne Classic (Gr 2, 1200m) earlier on the Doomben card. “The (Dalrello) winner (Jagged Edge) had a wide barrier as well but probably had a better run than us," Hulbert said. "But I think she still has a habit of wanting to hang in for a stride or two when Taylor (jockey Marshall) goes for her. It can cost her races and she needs to get over it. She has done well since her first-up run although the wet weather has been no help.”

McEvoy aiming tohave three in DerbyTony McEvoy is planning to launch a three-pronged assault on Saturday’s South Australian Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) with recent Strathalbyn winner Resurge (So You Think) joining Secret Blaze (Sizzling) and Classic Weiwei (Shamus Award) in the $500,000 contest. "Secret Blaze is in fantastic form and is a winner over 2400 metres already and so he’s training on beautifully," McEvoy told Racing.com. "Classic Weiwei’s form has been fantastic in Adelaide and he continues to step up and that shows me two things – one, it looks like he’ll handle the class on his last run and I think he’s going to love a mile and a half. I wouldn’t underestimate him. There’s also a horse called Resurge by So You ThInk. His form has been a little bit disappointing and I took him down a grade the other day and he was really impressive on a Wednesday at Strathalbyn. We’ll try to get him into the race as well because if I worked him with the other two, he’d be very competitive

with them while his race day form has been below them."

Unheralded Douglasand Thornton keep Group 1 mountsClayton Douglas and Damien Thornton will both chase their first Group 1 wins in the South Australian Derby when they retain the rides on a pair of leading contenders from the Anthony Freedman stable. Thornton steered Ridgewood Drive (Sebring) to a four-length win in a 2000 metre handicap for three-year-olds at Flemington on Saturday, while Douglas keeps the ride on Declarationofheart (Declaration Of War), whom he rode to victory in one of the main Derby lead-up races at Morphettville, the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 2000m) on April 27. "Clayton rode him really well last time, so we like to keep loyal to him," assistant trainer Sam Freedman said. "He does a lot of work at home for us."

Tom Melbourne and Destiny’s Kiss nominated for SconeFan favourites Destiny's Kiss (Power Of Kiss) and Tom Melbourne (Dylan Thomas) head the 27 nominations for the Scone Cup (Listed, 1600m) on the first day of the Hunter Valley showpiece meeting. The Joe Pride-trained veteran Destiny's Kiss and Tom Melbourne from the Chris Waller stable are equal top weights on 59 kilograms for Friday's contest. Now a ten-year-old, Destiny's Kiss will have a winter campaign with Pride saying he shows no signs he is tired of racing. "Winter is his time when the tracks are softer," Pride said. "He has had a good break and come back really well. He loves his work and stable life although obviously he is getting near the end of his career."

Moldova heads Redoute’s Choice Stakes entriesThe Danny O'Brien-trained Moldova (Snitzel) headlines the nominations for the Redoute's Choice Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday having impressed in wins at Bendigo and Flemington to start her career. Moldova won an 1100-metre handicap for fillies at Flemington on Saturday to remain unbeaten and has been entered to run on a seven-day back-up in the $140,000 contest, which has attracted 23 nominations.

Shinn to ride Kiwi Vigor Winner

Blake Shinn has been confirmed to ride promising three-year-old Vigor Winner (Declaration Of War) when he competes at Eagle Farm later this month. Cambridge trainer Lauren Brennan has confirmed Vigor Winner will make his Australian debut in the Fred Best Classic (Gr 3, 1400m) on May 25 and is thrilled to have secured the services of Shinn. “It’s a bit of a coup getting him,” Brennan said. “He’s confirmed for the Fred Best and if the horse goes well we’re hoping he will stick with him.”

Oliver to partner Steel Prince in RamsdenChampion jockey Damien Oliver will take over on Steel Prince (Nathaniel) when the in-form stayer bids to win his way into the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) in the Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m) on May 25. Steel

Prince made it four wins from as many starts this preparation since joining the Anthony Freedman stable with a hard-fought on-pace victory in Saturday's Brew Handicap (2600m) at Flemington. The Irish-bred gelding has been ridden by apprentice Michael Poy in three of his four wins this preparation, including his past two starts. Apprentices cannot claim in the Andrew Ramsden and the Freedman stable has confirmed Oliver will ride Steel Prince. The winner of the Andrew Ramsden, which is now restricted to three, four and five-year-olds, earns a ballot exemption into this year's Melbourne Cup.

Furrion might also head towards cup exemptionThe Lindsay Park-trained Furrion (Camelot) could also head to the Andrew Ramsden Stakes following his victory in the Warrnambool Cup (Listed, 2350m) on Thursday. Senior trainer David Hayes wants to talk to connections and assess form from over the weekend before making a call whether Furrion goes for a spell or presses on to the Ramsden. "The horse is having an easy few days in the stable," Hayes said. "He'll either go out or go for the Ramsden. We'll make the decision very soon."

Offers come for Prince Of SussexMornington trainer Matt Laurie is hopeful of retaining inaugural The Showdown (1200m) winner Prince Of Sussex (Toronado) despite an increasing number of lucrative offers being put forward for the impressive juvenile. The lightly raced gelding stamped himself as a talented horse with a victory at Bendigo in March before backing it up with a one and three-quarter length victory in the $1 million The Showdown on April 27. "There’s have been offers – as there is always going to be when you win like he has – but nothing has been done as yet," Laurie told Racing.com. "I would be very happy if he stayed here in our stable. He’s the best horse we’ve had

through but at the same time, it’s hard to knock back something big, so I wouldn’t begrudge the owners for entertaining it."

Currie-trained horses transferredQueensland stewards have allowed 26 horses to be moved from Ben Currie's stables to other trainers with some nominated for upcoming races. Currie is barred from nominating horses for meetings after Racing Queensland invoked Australian Racing Rule AR 55. He has sought a judicial review of the decision which allows RQ to refuse his nominations without giving a reason. Currie will also be sentenced this week after being found guilty on two counts of bringing racing into disrepute involving text messages. Queensland Racing Integrity Commission chief steward Peter Chadwick said permission had been given for 26 horses to be transferred to other trainers. "We will treat applications to move horses on a case by case basis," Chadwick said. "You will see some of the horses have been nominated by other trainers for meetings later this week."

Slight improvement for injured HackettInjured jockey Michael Hackett is continuing to take small steps on his road to recovery. Hackett was one of three riders to fall at the Tomingley Cup picnic race meeting in central western NSW last Saturday week. He was transferred to Liverpool Hospital in a critical condition and placed in an induced coma with his sedation reduced last week. Racing NSW said on Monday Hackett was making slow progress. "He was more awake on Sunday night opening his eyes for five minutes and he spoke a few words," a statement from the governing body said. "He has been a lot more sleepy today. It's just a waiting game now for him to slowly wake up." Ricky Blewitt, who suffered fractures in the fall, was discharged from Westmead Hospital on Monday while Michael Gray is recovering after having surgery on a broken clavicle.

New Zealand

Showcasing sets new juvenile benchmarkFormer Haunui Farm shuttler Showcasing (Oasis Dream) has taken his standing as a sire of winning two-year-olds in New Zealand to a possible record level. His progeny won both the two black-type races run on Saturday, with Rainbow Dash proving too strong in the Waikato Equine Veterinary Centre Stakes (Listed, 1100m) at Te Rapa and All About Magic picking up the Champagne Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at Riccarton. Showcasing has been represented by 12 individual two-year-old winners of 16 races in New Zealand this season and that is a modern day record. Mark Chitty, who stood Showcasing at Haunui Farm, has delved back as far as 2006-07 and since then the most two-year-old wins recorded in New Zealand was eight, achieved by Showcasing in 2017-18 and fellow Haunui Farm sire Iffraaj (Zafonic) in 2013-14. “It would be a long, long time since a sire in New Zealand has broken ten in a season, if it has been done,’’ Chitty said.

International

132 for Shamardal Godolphin’s stellar year with their juveniles continued into Europe yesterday when Ickworth (2 f ex Ishitaki by Interprete) maintained her unbeaten record in the First Flier Stakes (Listed, 5f) at the Curragh, becoming the 132nd individual stakes winner for Kildangan Stud resident Shamardal (Giant’s Causeway). Trained by Willie McCreery, the juvenile homebred supplemented her debut success in a Dundalk maiden when quickening two and a quarter lengths clear of red-hot favourite King Neptune (War Front), while there was a further half a length back to In The Present (Karakontie) in third. Shamardal is currently standing for a private fee.

39 for Frankel Obligate (3 f ex Responsible by Oasis Dream) became the 39th stakes winner for Banstead Manor resident Frankel (Galileo) when she easily landed the Prix Des Lilas (Listed, 1600m) at Chantilly yesterday. Trained by Pascal Bary and ridden by Pierre-Charles Boudot, Obligate quickened three and a half lengths clear of

Pure Zen (Zoffany), with a further length back to Gypsy Spirit (Gregorian) in third. Obligate won on debut at Saint-Cloud in November and extended her unbeaten run to two yesterday, while Frankel is currently standing for a fee of £175,000.

53 for Dark Angel

Yeomanstown Stud flagbearer Dark Angel (Acclamation) sired his 53rd individual stakes winner yesterday when the Dermot Weld-trained Shelir (3 c ex Shelina by Dalakhani) produced a sustained late surge to land the Tetrarch Stakes (Listed, 7f) later on the Curragh card. Another who is now unbeaten having narrowly prevailed in a Navan maiden on March 30, Shelir hit the line strongly under Chris Hayes, coming home a length and a quarter to the good over Eclipse Storm (Dream Ahead) with Flash Gordon (Kodiac) a further short-head away in third. Dark Angel is currently standing for a fee of €85,000.

83 for War Front The Aidan O’Brien-trained Happen (3 ex Alexandrova by Sadler’s Wells) secured a last-gasp success in the Athasi Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at the Curragh yesterday, handing Coolmore America resident War Front (Danzig) his 83rd stakes winner. The improving three-year-old, who finished second to Sunday’s 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1,1m) runner-up Lady Kaya (Dandy Man) on her return in the 1,000 Guineas Trial (Gr 3, 7f) at Leopardstown, didn’t look the likely winner for much of the seven-furlong journey, but she was galvanised late by Ryan Moore to lead on the line, chinning British raider Dan’s Dream (Cityscape) by a short-head, with a further neck back to Rionach (Sea The Stars) in third. War Front is currently standing at Coolmore’s Ashford base in Kentucky for a fee of US$250,000.

44 for New Approach Darley stallion New Approach (Galileo) sired his 44th stakes winner at Chantilly yesterday when Flop Shot (3 c Dancequest by Dansili) skipped three lengths clear of his six rivals in the Prix De Guiche (Gr 3, 1800m). Trained by Andre Fabre and making his fourth outing having broken his maiden over the same distance on the Chantilly Polytrack first-up in March, Flop Shot proved much too strong for runner-up Syrtis (Frankel), while Insandi (Anodin) finished a length and a quarter further back in third. New Approach is currently standing at Dalham Hall Stud in Newmarket for a fee of £30,000.

Magical lands Mooresbridge Later on the Curragh card, Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore returned to the winner’s enclosure when Magical (4 f Galileo - Halfway To Heaven by Pivotal) posted a comfortable success in the Mooresbridge Stakes (Gr 2, 1m2f). The four-year-old, who signed off 2018 with a first top-flight win in the British Champions Fillies & Mares Stakes (Gr 1, 1m4f) at Ascot in October, easily landed the Alleged Stakes (Gr 3, 1m2f) on her return at Naas and she made it two from two this season when fending off Flag Of Honour (Galileo) by a length and a half, who in turn was a neck clear of The King (Mastercraftsman) in third. Magical is one of 76 Group/Grade 1 winners for Coolmore supersire Galileo (Sadler’s Wells), who was responsible for Sunday’s 1,000 Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) winner Hermosa.

West to launch Kentucky Derby appeal Owner Gary West will lodge an appeal against the controversial decision of the stewards at Churchill Downs to sensationally demote Maximum Security (New Year’s Day) from first place in the Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) for causing interference. West hinted at an appeal in the immediate aftermath of Saturday's dramatic event and he will take that course of action in an episode that has generated debate on a global scale. Speaking on NBC network's Today Show on Monday, West said: "The appeal has to be filed within 48 hours and we're going to file it with the state racing commission today."

Soldier Hollow - German raider Amarena (3 f ex Amouage by Tiger Hill) became the 32nd individual for Gestut Auenquelle resident Soldier Hollow (In The Wings) when the Henk Grew-trained three-year-old landed the Prix de la Seine (Listed, 2200m) at Longchamp on Saturday. Soldier Hollow is currently standing for a fee of €30,000.

Stratum - Absolute Flirt (2 f ex Bisutti by Northern Meteor) took out the Queen Adelaide Stakes (Listed, 1050m) at Morphettville on Saturday, providing the late Widden Stud stallion Stratum (Redoute’s Choice) with his 41st stakes winner. Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Stratum died in 2016 and is the sire of seven Group 1 winners.

Ron gets better part of Valour

As far as birthday presents go, winning a Group Two with a horse you bred and part-own is tough to top.

On Saturday at Morphettville, Ron Sayers looked on as his exciting 3YO, Valour Road, captured his second stakes victory in the Euclase Stakes over 1200m. And what a win. After taking the lead early, Valour Road was getting plenty of attention over the concluding stages, yet held on grimly in a brilliant display of sheer grit. A cheer for every stride.

Trouble is, Sayers was 2,700 kilometres from Morphettville and had to be content to barrack at the telly from Perth’s Ascot racecourse.

“I’ve got a 2YO colt by War Chant, called War Saint, who won his debut very impressively a couple of weeks back,” Sayers explains. “Anyway, a couple of mates, who have never been to the track before, are in the horse so I decided to stay in Perth and spend the afternoon with them. War Saint had drawn wide though and ended up getting beaten.

“Don’t worry, if Valour Road runs in the (Group One $750,000) Goodwood in a fortnight I’ll definitely be on the plane.”

One of Western Australia’s most successful miners and founder of billion dollar operation, Ausdrill, Sayers sold his shares in the company last year, but remains one of the state’s biggest thoroughbred investors.

In 1997, Sayers purchased Yarradale Stud – 40 minutes north east of Perth – and has owned as many as 200 broodmares and had shares in 10 stallions. However, he has scaled back in

recent times to 120 mares and six stallions.Yarradale Stud has four of those stallions on

its roster: Bradbury’s Luck, Gingerbread Man, Heritage and the evergreen, War Chant, whose 41 stakes winners include the 2017 Group One William Reid Stakes winner, Silent Sedition, while War Chant is also the damsire of 2019 Kentucky Derby winner, Country House.

Unfortunately for Sayers, Valour Road’s sire, Frost Giant – a Group One winning Giant’s Causeway stallion – only stood the two seasons at Yarradale, but took ill and couldn’t shuttle in 2015.

“He (Frost Giant) is doing quite well in New York and I was quick to text his owner to let him

know that Valour Road won the Group Two and I’m hoping one day we might get the stallion back here,” Sayers reveals. “Valour Road is a

gelding but I’ve got his 2YO half brother by War Chant and it’s a good family too with the dam, Melba Avenue, a half sister to multiple Group winner Raspberries, while other relations include the Group One winners Flavour and Sonntag.”

Winner of the $251,000 Magic Millions at Pinjarra on debut and Group Two Karrakatta Plate at his next outing, Valour Road has now won four from eight and $729,307 in prizemoney.

Valour Road still has a fair way to go though to catch up with Sayers’ standard bearer, the 2001-2002 Cox Plate winner, Northerly.

A “victim” of racing since he was four years old, Sayers quips that Northerly might be the best/worst thing that’s happened to him.

“I bought a share in Northerly and he ended up winning nine Group Ones and nearly $10 million in stakes. However, it’s cost me a lot of money in the nearly 20 years since trying to find one to replace him!,” Sayers adds with a laugh.

Valour Road’s trainer Simon Miller, meanwhile, will be aiming to collect his first Group One success in the Goodwood.

Originally with Robbie Griffiths in Victoria before taking over as foreman for John O’Shea

in Sydney, Miller established a stable in Perth nine years ago and has gone on to saddle up the winners of 49 stakes races: Whispering Brook, Power Princess, Miss Rose de Lago and Night War among them.

With just the three Group Ones annually in Perth, Miller has nevertheless had several placegetters at the elite level, but is hoping to break his duck for Sayers via Valour Road.

“I’ve usually got four or five in work for Ron

and, fortunately, I’ve trained quite a few winners for him,” Miller explains. “Valour Road was offered by Yarradale Stud at the 2017 Perth Magic Millions Yearling Sale and I picked the horse up for $60,000.

“Ron usually offers to keep a leg in the yearlings he sells, but most of the ones I buy are usually fully subscribed. I’ve got a great bunch of owners in Valour Road – you should have seen them celebrating on Saturday! – but for a little while after the sale there was still 30% left … so I gave Ron a call.

“He said, ‘ah, I’m finally going to get a quarter share, am I?’ and I told him he could have 30% if he was that keen.

“After the horse got back from the breakers and we’d given him a couple of tryouts, I just had to ring Ron and tell him that I bet you’re glad you took that extra 5%.”

HOOFNOTE: The Euclase victory had special meaning for Sayers as he stood the race’s namesake in Western Australia for several seasons. Winner of the Group One Goodwood, Euclase is best remembered as the sire of Group One winning sprinter, La Baraka.

Scenic Lodge were well-prepared for a future after Blackfriars and they got the succession plan right with Snippetson and Universal Ruler.

Blackfriars (Danehill) is three months away from collecting his 9th WA sires’ premiership, and second posthumously, with earnings over $3.60 million to May 1. His tally of winners and wins (80 – 115) is also the best in the west this season.

Scenic Lodge dominates WA stallions ranks with Snippetson ($2.52 million) and Universal Ruler ($2.10 million) next best on the table. Weight of numbers will give Snippetson a decided advantage to take over as WA’s leading active sire in 2018-19.

“We stand the two leading stallions in WA and it’s been great to see Snippetson having such a fantastic start with his first locally-bred runners,” Scenic Lodge general manager Jeremy Smith said. “They’re showing heaps of natural ability and without doubt the highlight so far has been Tinsnip.”

Tinsnip was runner-up in the G2 Karrakatta Plate (1200m) before going one better in the G3 WA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) on April 18.

Trainer Adam Durrant sent him straight to the paddock for the G2 WA Guineas in November. “Snippetson has covered good quality books since arriving in WA and were excited with his foals coming through,” Smith added. “We expect him to be very popular at an affordable fee this season.”

Universal Ruler has come from nowhere to challenge for honours on the back of a potent 3yo division this season. He leads that category with 20 winners of 32 races and $1.58 million in prizemoney.

His top filly Lady Cosmology earned a trip to Adelaide for the G1 Robert Sangster Stakes after an Ascot summer carnival victory in the LR Burgess Queen Stakes and subsequent seconds in the G3 Champion Fillies and G2 WA Guineas.

Angelic Ruler won the LR Rangeview Stud Classic and went to Melbourne for placings in the G2 Angus Armanasco, G2 Kewney and G3 Alexandra Stakes earlier this year.

Universal Ruler’s 3yo filly Bam’s On Fire has also been sent east where she won by five lengths first-up for Caulfield trainers Ciaron

Maher & David Eustace. She had shown enormous potential last year to recover from bad starts when third in the G3 Gimcrack Stakes and fourth in the G2 Karrakatta Plate.

“His results over the last 12 to 18 months have been simply staggering. He has gone to another level,” Smith said. “And now he’s starting to emulate the deeds of his father Scenic.

“Universal Ruler was the most popular stallion in WA last season by mares covered on the back of the great run by his progeny and he’s on track to become Western Australia’s champion of the future.”

Group 1 grey Dash For Cash fills out the roster and Scenic Lodge has ensured he’s accessible to all breeders in WA. “He continues to sire numerous quality winners throughout Australia like Melbourne flying-machine Grey Shadow,” Smith said. “Locally, his runners are just starting to emerge and include the quality stayer Without Reason.”
