President’s Announcements:
President Raj Invited 3 more members to give 5 min talks as part of our getting to know each other process:
• PP Rob McKimm.
Amused everyone with a cracker of a joke about being unable to “send a knight out on a dog like this…”
Claimed to have become involved with Rotary having at last found some evenings and weekends free by
breaking his shoulder skiing and being unable to work for 6 months – a very exclusive and original Rotary
membership motivator!
• Linda Davies.
Described a very broad Rotary involvement since joining as a 21 year old following a Youth Exchange
experience.
Her roll as a Doctor in the RAAF saw her as a member of several Clubs including overseas, Australian and
even as an E Club member.
She is a big advocate for Rotary Youth programs, RYLA and Rotary medical programs.
• PP Alan Lewis.
Joined Rotary in 1969 after experience
as a guest speaker.
Resigned in the mid 70s when being
president of the Hospital Committee
became very time consuming.
Rejoined 2003 and served as president
in 2006
Enjoys community involvement with
many involvements over the years:
Arts Council, Swimming Pool
Fundraising Committee, Surf Club
Music 81 to name but a few.
Retired City Engineer and consultant.
Currently owner skipper of the
Rubeena and one of the primary
motivators for our “Race the Rubeena”
fun run fund raiser.
Alan receives his latest award at the Central Gippsland Tourism Business
Awards ceremony this week. Past Sale Rotarian, daughter Christina, holds
the award for “Best Visitor Attraction”.
Guest Speaker:
Chairman David introduced Trent Stothers Aviation manager at the ESSO heliport.
Trent gave and comprehensive and fascinating outline of his career in aviation and especially his role at
ESSO’s heliport. An ex Sale Tech student, Trent started his career as an apprentice with Rudys Aero
Engines at West Sale. Trent acknowledged his debt to his then math’s teacher, Rotarian Rod Exton.
Trent has had a stellar career at a relatively young age with stints at Younger Aviation, a re-supply operation
for the Antarctic French base before joining ESSO. The image below explains the complexity of the
operation at ESSO.
Trent received a small memento of his time with us from President Raj.

2018/19 Changeover
Our annual Changeover evening, held at the Criterion again with their usual excellent service and food (thanks
Ferg), was an outstanding success.
This dinner was the culmination of many months of careful planning and good communication by our amalgamation
committee, to make our new combined club a successfully reality. Despite some understandable reservations from a
few members and officials, the committee’s efficiency and timing have clearly assured success. The inspired decision
to install President Raj early and the appointment of a good cross section of members to key positions were, I think,
the main reasons for our successful amalgamation.
Both immediate past president’s reports are produced below. Both played a key role in ensuring a
harmonious amalgamation:
President Jeanette’s report.
It has been my privilege to have held the Rotary Club of Sale President’s role over this last year and to present a brief report on our club activities over this time. Our club celebrated its inaugural 90th Birthday last October and we enjoyed a meal at The Laurels enjoying fellowship with club members from far and wide, including our host club of Melbourne and other local service groups. Two Paul Harris Fellowships were awarded to quiet achievers within our community, Yvonne Clavarino from the Sale Ambulance Auxiliary and Wendy Phelan from the Sale Scouts Group. In November a ballot of both club’s members confirmed the aim of merging the Rotary Clubs of Sale and Sale Central into one club. This process took until today’s changeover to be fully in effect but we have been meeting together as one club since early January. The change in meeting venue/night, club structure and to balance a larger array of club projects, has been a big adjustment, but all our members have worked hard together to successfully maintain our fellowship and continuity. The club has continued its ongoing work with National Youth Science Forum, Rotary Health Scholarships, RYLA, MUNA, Dream Cricket, Special Schools Lawn Bowls sponsorship, along with the Sale Show gates & Australia Day Ceremonies and other local community events. We hosted the “Race the Rubeena” community fun run again in March and raised $10,000 for the purchase of three “crash” carts for the emergency department at our local Sale hospital, and next year’s fun-run is already well into the planning stages. We fully supported the Five Star Project with its proposal to extend and build another facility here in Sale and continued to support Rotary Centenary House with the construction and opening of its third accommodation wing. Many combined projects are underway including Sale Wetlands Heritage boardwalk and signs upgrades which were originally constructed by our club. My president goals of supporting Sky Hydrants are coming to fruition with the opportunity of co-hosting with Disaster Aid to provide/install at least two sky hydrants in Timor Leste. The club has also provided support to the Rotary Foundation by being a full “Centurion Club” once again year for the third year in a row. Finally, I would like to wish our incoming president Raj Mani all the best for a successful Club year, and to offer all my support as incoming secretary to him and to the club over this time.
Jeanette Henwood
President 2018-19
President Andrew’s report.
What a fantastic opportunity to have been your President for the 2018 - 2019 Rotary Year and I would like to present to you the following report summarising my view of the past year for the Rotary Club of Sale Central. The year has been, of course, dominated by the effective amalgamation of our club with The Rotary Club of Sale. Despite this distraction, our committed members have continued to successfully maintain our community projects, Monday Night Tucker, the Music Festival and The Annual Book Sale. The SEED Community Garden spent most of the year awaiting the Latrobe Valley Authority to confirm success with our grant and I am most pleased that considerable ground works have commenced. These projects directly benefit our community and the success from all this has come about as a result of hard work and commitment from organisers and volunteers. It is a result of the determination and time that our Members contribute to get these projects off the ground. We also have another ongoing project and that is the Vanuatu Prevention of Blindness project and again I would like to acknowledge the amount of time committed and involvement organising this successful project which consists of providing not only eye care but also physiotherapy and ear nose and throat treatment. This year saw the first Victorian Multi-district Conference held in Melbourne which was an absolute success. I congratulate those District Governors, including our own district’s Janne Speirs, and others involved in organising this most successful and enjoyable event. There have undoubtedly been many challenges in the merging of the two Rotary clubs but despite these challenges, I don’t think we could have asked for a smoother transition. This is a credit to each and every one of our members and I want to especially acknowledge those who were not in favour of the merge yet still continued with their membership. A very fine example of putting Service through Rotary Above Self. There are still many challenges ahead of us in re-shaping the new Rotary Club of Sale, with the transitional Board, soon to be the official Board, taking a root and branch approach to all aspects of our club and its projects. We must work together and continually share our ideals and I believe we can accomplish much of what we set out to do. I personally thank the Rotary Club of Sale Central for your support and belief in me. I look forward to the following year with Raj Mani at the helm and knowing Raj’s commitment to Rotary, he can only but be successful in his position as President. It has been an absolute honour to serve Rotary. Andrew Bradley President 2018 -2019
The main purpose of the night, however, was to officially install incoming President Raj and the new Board and Other Officers.
