NYQUIST'S NEXT WORK SET FOR APRIL 15By Ron Mitchell

Nyquist put in his first serious exercise since win-

ning the Florida Derby (gr. I), having a strong

gallop the morning of April 11 at Keeneland. Trainer

Doug O'Neill said the Uncle Mo colt would have his

next workout Friday, April 15.

Southern California-based O'Neill plans to arrive in

Lexington Thursday to oversee the work by the colt,

who is undefeated in seven career starts and was

2015 champion 2-year-old male.

With exercise rider Jonny Garcia aboard, Nyquist

jogged Monday before getting into a strong gallop.

Over the weekend Nyquist only jogged at Keeneland

after an elevated white blood cell count kept him con-

fined to the barn for several days following his arrival

April 3.

"It was his first day back galloping and Jonny said

he felt great," said assistant trainer Jack Sisterson. "We

couldn't be any happier with him. We're in a good

position."

Winning the Florida Derby in impressive fashion

April 2, Nyquist solidified his status as the Kentucky

Derby (gr. I) favorite. His connections won the Derby

and Preakness (gr. I) with I'll Have Another in 2012. BH

ZENYATTA DELIVERS WAR FRONT COLTBy Myra Lewyn

Jerry and Ann Moss' Zenyatta, 2010 Horse of the

Year, foaled a colt by Claiborne Farm sire War

Front April 11 at William S. Farish's Lane's End near

Versailles, Ky.

The foal arrived at 9:24 p.m. EDT but was born

slightly meconium-stained, however, meaning he

had aspirated some of the fecal-like substance

normally present in the small colon at birth so he

and the mare were sent to a clinic as a precaution,

according to Lane's End farm manager Mike Cline.

"After about 48 hours (there) he should return

to the farm in a couple of days, but he looks to be

in really good shape."

Cline said Zenyatta is doing great.

"She had a normal delivery, and she's in very

good health.

"The foal is a dark bay, very similar to the color

to Zenyatta," he added. "He has a big blaze that

runs the whole length of his face. He's a well-

grown, good-sized, nice, big, leggy sort of foal."

Plans call for Zenyatta to be bred this season,

possibly to War Front, but Cline said no final deci-

sion has been made. BH

STEVE HASKIN’S DERBY DOZEN

1 NYQUIST Trainer/owner: Doug O’Neill/Reddam Racing

Pedigree: Uncle Mo—Seeking Gabrielle, by Forestry

Breeder: Summerhill Farm (KY)

We all know by now he missed a couple of days of training with a slightly elevated white blood cell count, but he never missed an oat and has been back to the track showing great energy. Remember, he did travel cross-country, won the Xpressbet.com Florida Derby (gr. I), and immediately traveled to Kentucky.

2 EXAGGERATOR Keith Desormeaux/Big Chief Racing, Head of Plains Partners,

Rocker O Ranch, et al.

Curlin—Dawn Raid, by Vindication

Joseph B. Murphy (KY)

The questions keep piling up. What exactly are we dealing with here? Is he a slop freak, having won two graded stakes on wet tracks and finishing a close second once, or is he simply an extremely talented horse who finally is putting it all together thanks to a major change in running style?

3 BRODY’S CAUSE Dale Romans/Albaugh Family Stable

Giant’s Causeway—Sweet Breanna, by Sahm

Gabriel Duignan, William Arvin Jr., and Petaluma Bloodstock (KY)

Well, I stuck with Brody’s Cause at either No. 2 or No. 3 for 10 weeks waiting for his debut in the Lambholm South Tampa Bay Derby (gr. II), but it took him another four weeks after that to run the way I’ve been expecting. Was it his love of Keeneland or is this what we’re going to see at Churchill Downs?

4 CUPID Bob Baffert/Michael Tabor, Susan Magnier, Derrick Smith

Tapit—Pretty ’n Smart, by Beau Genius

JKG Thoroughbreds (KY)

He drilled seven furlongs in 1:243/5, as Baffert focuses on sharp-ening him up while building up his stamina. That is the one thing we don’t know about him; how effective he’ll be at 11/4 miles. From a speed-figure standpoint, his Rebel Stakes (gr. II) Tho-ro-Graph figure was slow compared to the runner-up.

5 MOR SPIRIT Bob Baffert/Michael Lund Petersen

Eskendereya—Im a Dixie Girl, by Dixie Union

Elkstone Group (PA)

There are plusses and minuses to take from his second-place finish in the Santa Anita Derby (gr. I). The positives are that he didn’t seem comfortable in the slop, and he was not hard ridden in the final furlong, yet still kicked in late to get second. However, he did not show any acceleration until the sixteenth pole.

6 DESTIN Todd Pletcher/Twin Creeks Racing Stables

Giant’s Causeway—Dream of Summer, by Siberian Summer

James C. Weigel & Taylor Made Stallions (KY)

Things are never cut and dry anymore, and traditional training regimens are slowly disappearing, and as a result I’m totally con-fused what to do about this colt. Because the connections are so closely associated with the Ragozin Sheets, I can understand their concerns about such an early peak performance.

7 OUTWORK Todd Pletcher/Repole Stable

Uncle Mo—Nonna Mia, by Empire Maker

Repole Stable (KY)

Guess what? We have positives and negatives to sort out. Whether or not this colt is ready to win the Run for the Roses off only four starts, what he has accomplished in a short period of time has been pretty remarkable, and after his last two starts he has gained the experience of a seasoned veteran.

8 GUN RUNNERSteve Asmussen/Winchell Thoroughbreds and Three Chimneys Farm

Candy Ride—Quiet Giant, by Giant’s Causeway

Besilu Stables (KY)

He is another who has looked visually impressive in his two stakes victories at Fair Grounds Race Course & Slots but has been running slow figures and beating questionable competi-tion, so we really have no idea how good this colt is. His Tho-ro-Graph figs have been steady but need to get faster by several points.

9 MOHAYMEN Kiaran McLaughlin/Shadwell Stable

Tapit—Justwhistledixie, by Dixie Union

Clearsky Farms (KY)

If you were confused where to rank him last week, you might have a better idea this week if you go by the fact that not only did he run poorly in the Florida Derby but the three horses who have run second to him in stakes—Flexibility, Greenpointcrusad-er, and Zulu—have all run poorly in their final Derby preps.

10 MY MAN SAM Chad Brown/Sheep Pond Partners, Newport Stables, and Jay W. Bligh

Trappe Shot—Lauren Byrd, by Arch

Jay W. Bligh (KY)

What a day for owner Sol Kumin, who saw My Man Sam, owned by his Sheep Pond Partners, close like a rocket to finish second in the Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (gr. I) and earn a spot in the Ken-tucky Derby Presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and then watched Exaggerator, in whom he owns 20% for his Head of Plains Part-ners, romp in the Santa Anita Derby.

11 SUDDENBREAKINGNEWS Donnie Von Hemel/Samuel F. Henderson

Mineshaft—Uchitel, by Afleet Alex

Branch Equine (KY)

I was seriously considering dropping him and then see how he runs in the Arkansas Derby (gr. I) because he currently sits at No. 32 on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard and needs a sec-ond-place finish to be sure of a spot in the field. But I like every-thing about this horse and will bank on him running big.

12 WHITMORERon Moquett/Harry Rosenblum, Robert LaPenta, and

Southern Springs Stables

Pleasantly Perfect—Melody’s Spirit, by Scat Daddy

John Liviakis (KY)

His Thoro-Graph figure for the Rebel was more than three points faster than the victorious Cupid’s, which gives you an indication just how much ground he lost throughout the race. So, perhaps it wasn’t the distance or a lack of a killer instinct that got him beat in his last two starts. Denotes Keeneland Sales Graduate

PUSH FOR PENALTY SYSTEM EXPECTEDBy Tom LaMarra

Thus far the multiple medication violation penalty

system—one of four components of the National

Uniform Medication Program—has been adopted by

the least number of racing jurisdictions, but officials

April 11 said they expect that to change this year.

The system is designed to discourage train-

ers from racking up multiple drug violations

either for therapeutic overages or non-con-

trolled substances. For the system to be most

effective, it must be in place throughout the

United States.

"This needs to get done, and we're going

to get it done this year," Thoroughbred Horse-

men's Association chairman Alan Foreman

said during the Racing Officials Accreditation

Program conference at Delaware Park. "It's

something (the industry) should take credit for,

not demean."

According to the Racing Medication and

Testing Consortium, 12 states that account for

34.5% of total U.S. pari-mutuel handle have

adopted the MMV penalty system. In compar-

ison, 19 have adopted the Controlled Therapeutic

Medication Schedule and 27 employ accredited labo-

ratories for drug testing.

Foreman stated the THA will soon launch a web-

site to provide "one-stop," comprehensive informa-

tion for horsemen, stewards, racetracks, and others

on medication and drug testing. BH

DAM OF BARBARO PENSIONEDBy Amanda Duckworth

La Ville Rouge, the dam of ill-fated Kentucky Derby

(gr. I) winner Barbaro, was pensioned after pro-

ducing a Bernardini filly last year.

The 20-year-old Carson City mare is now enjoy-

ing her retirement at Roy and Gretchen Jackson's

Lael Farm in Pennsylvania.

"She had trouble with the last two foals she had,

which were both fillies, and we chose not to breed

her again. She is doing great," said Gretchen Jack-

son.

La Ville Rouge was not bred for 2014, but pro-

duced healthy fillies by Bernardini in both 2013

and 2015. The graded stakes-placed mare visited

Dynaformer, who died in 2012, for much of her

broodmare career and produced four full brothers

to Barbaro.

Nicanor and Lentenor are standing at stud,

while Margano and Pennmarydel are living quieter

lives. Margano is retired at Lael Farm, turned out

with millionaire and multiple grade I winner Show-

ing Up. Pennmarydel was given to Allie Conrad, the

executive director of CANTER Mid Atlantic.

As for La Ville Rouge, she shares a paddock with

the likes of multiple graded stakes winners You'd

Be Surprised and Belle Cherie, who are also pen-

sioned. BH

ROAP CALLS RECIPROCITY ON LISTS 'VITAL'By Tom LaMarra

The Racing Officials Accreditation Program

this year plans to drive home the point that

reciprocity among racing jurisdictions regarding

steward, starter, and veterinarian lists is "vital

for horse and rider safety."

During the first of a two-day ROAP confer-

ence at Delaware Park, officials April 11 said not

honoring veterinarians' lists from track to track

raises concerns about liability. In particular, it

could lead to protests if a horse that shouldn't

have been eligible to compete wins a race. That

hasn't been the case, but ROAP chairman Hugh

Gallagher said it's not out of the question.

"There is the civil (lawsuit) route that can

take place," said Gallagher, the New York Racing

Association safety steward. "I'm not so sure that

day will come, but the way to prevent it from

happening is to honor lists."

Retired steward Dr. Ted Hill said it "should

be a high priority" given the potential con-

sequences. "Sooner or later a horse will slip

through (the process), have a catastrophic

injury that may be totally unrelated to the initial

problem, and a rider could get seriously injured

or worse." BH

RACINGCOMMENTARYwith Bob Barry

OH, WHAT A TIMES!

A short-lived but well-loved newspaper made

its debut 25 years ago this week. It was

called The Racing Times, and to this aspiring

horseplayer—hungry for greater understanding

of this dazzling yet often perplexing game—it

was racetrack dope that came straight out of

Keats: Truth and Beauty in broadsheet form.

In a debut column titled, "A new era starts

today", editor-in-chief Steven Crist welcomed

readers to what he claimed would "be a new era

in racing information."

His language about a certain 900-pound

gorilla that had been dominating the past per-

formances market for decades, was similarly

audacious ("a bloodless chronicle that neither

reported the real news nor captured any of

the joy of the sport"). It was thrilling to hold

and read such a thing. It felt as if Karl Marx had

asked you to take a look at his new manifesto.

The columnists and contributing writers

included names that already lined the growing

"racing and handicapping" section of my library:

Tom (The Complete Horseplayer) Ainslie and Steve

(Betting Thoroughbreds) Davidowitz among them.

They even had William Murray (the now-late

author of the "Shifty Lou Anderson" racetrack

mystery series).

The charts and past performance lines were

primarily from the newly formed Equibase ("the

official data-collection operation of the Thor-

oughbred Racing Associations of North America

and The Jockey Club"). Best of all, even though

Andy Beyer was not a Racing Times columnist,

his Speed Figures informed all of the past per-

formance lines.

As someone who read and then re-read Pick-

ing Winners and My $50,000 Year at the Races, it

seemed to me the mysteries of the racing world

were gradually becoming revealed.

Readers belonging to one of those "late-in-

the-alphabet" generations may not understand

what an auspicious moment this was. This was

1991—five years before the internet would start

to change the publishing world forever—and

launching a new print title into a marketplace

dominated by a well-funded giant (the Daily

Racing Form was owned by Rupert Murdoch and

was selling about 140,000 copies every Satur-

day) seemed a sure way to lose a fortune, not

make one. The Racing Times seemed too good to

last. Alas, it was.

Robert Maxwell, a bitter rival of Murdoch's

and truly an international man of mystery, had

underwritten this beautiful broadsheet. Not long

after Maxwell's mysterious death he was re-

vealed to be as crooked and dark as The Racing

Times was straight and sunny. The paper folded

a couple of months shy of its first birthday. The

Form purchased its assets. It was an all-too-brief

candle. But it cast a lovely light. BH
