WELCOME TO THE 12TH EDITION OF THE GREEN EVENTS & INNOVATIONS CONFERENCE.
Welcome to the 12th edition of the Green Events & Innovations Conference, presented by A Greener Festival in partnership with the International Live Music Conference.
We warmly welcome all speakers, delegates and supporters who together are the creators of this important gathering. You collectively have significant influence across the live sector and beyond, and a power and willingness to drive change.
This year we have seen the live industry turn the gas up to full on the urgency to address our emissions, our waste, and our inequalities head on. Raising awareness of the issues of sustainability is almost cooked. Now we need to work out how to best serve it.
The last 6 months alone are unprecedented for the degree of collaboration and exchange on this very subject. UK Music has formed it’s first green working group for the Live sector, with all parts of the industry around the table. A Greener Festival have worked with more festivals, agents, venues and events than ever before sharing best practice and alliances across borders internationally. The Association for Electronic Music have established their green working group for the global electronic music industry. Music Declares Emergency has mushroomed as a campaign group using the voice of the Music Industry to accelerate actions for sustainability, propelled by Extinction Rebellion, Julies Bicycle and Ninja Tune to name a few.
In the festival sector alone, The Show Must Go On Report, second edition, is launched by Powerful Thinking with collaborations from across the UK Festival Industry, and the Vision 2025 campaign is in full force. The International Green Deal announced it’s cooperation between 17 partner festivals to explore the circular economy. Yourope’s GO Group and Take A Stand Campaign continue to gain momentum. Green Europe Experience (GEX) has been launched, led by We Love Green thanks to Creative Europe, bringing festivals together with the vision “infinite creativity within finite materiality”.
The list goes on.
This is so significant, because as we review our long-standing paradigm of competition and consumption, it is possible to envisage an environment that we can continue to live in.
So how best to serve the urgency of change for sustainability? The key is in, service, to each other, to the environment, and to our future generations.
All of us here at GEI, A Greener Festival and the ILMC are at your service, and we thank you whole heartedly for your contribution today to the 12th Green Events & Innovations Conference.

Without clean air and water, we have no society, yet so long as society suffers the environment will suffer too. Imbalances in society play out in the environment. The Live Music and events industry can be such a powerful tool in building bridges within and across communities, and an unparalleled communicator. How is the industry using this responsibility for positive change inside and out, and where necessary taking a stand?
Agenda
9GREEN EVENTS AND INNOVATIONS CONFERENCE 2020
1:10 – 1:30 pm Room 3
Breakout Session: Accessibility All AreasAdrian Bossey of Falmouth University investigates UK live music industry perceptions of current practice regarding accessibility for music festival and event attendees who are Deaf or disabled.
This session considers the current state of, and existing best practice in, accessibility at UK music festivals. Firstly, a discussion regarding the potential for ICT to improve accessibility for people who are Deaf or disabled. Additionally, ICT developments
enhancing design, marketing, operations and finally, performances. All topic considered and investigated across all phases of music festival delivery.
1:10 – 1:30 pm Room 4
IPM Production Note: Reducing Touring Footprints - A Sustainable Trucking UpdateHosted by: Rick Smith, Rule Out Loud Management & Maarten Arkenbout, Pieter Smit Trucking
Making tours carbon-neutral is the latest challenge for a lot of production specialists and suppliers. During this Production Note we will take a look at the green efforts entertainment transport company Pieter Smit have made over the last few years in order to get closer to this goal.

Breakout Session: Saving the World Begins at Breakfast(presented by NCASS)
Moderator: Mark Laurie (NCASS)
Speakers: Javier Rojo (Quantum Waste); Kate Cooper (Birmingham Food Council); Mia Frogner (Øya Festival)
Around a quarter of all GHG’s globally are generated by the food sector, this poses both an opportunity and a significant threat. If we can change our habits, we can have a major impact on climate change. We are fast approaching the point of no return – but is change happening?Saving the world begins at breakfast, based loosely on the book by Jonathan Safran Foer, will look at what decisions are within our power, why we are all responsible for our decisions and bringing about the change we want to see. Discussing the best high impact / low-cost practical changes that should be implemented at your events immediately and what structural problems within the food sector might take time and pressure. We can’t afford to be afraid of bold action.
• Understanding the global issue of food• Understand composting and waste• Reducing packaging and plastics• Working with traders, caterers and suppliers• Amplifying your message
Agenda

1:45 – 2:15 pm Room 4
Production Note: The introduction of Martyn’s LawHosted by: Carl A H Martin, cahm.uk
Martyn’s Law is a proposed piece of legislation, designed to give more protection against terrorism, that is being backed by the UK government. IPM looks at how this affects the production industry and venues.
2:30 – 2:45 pm Room 2
Talk: Slowly Down the Ganges – The Most Polluted River in the World
Speaker: Spike Reid (Expedition Leader & WaterAid advocate)
For 98 days Spike travelled steadily down the ‘River of Life’ in India to raise awareness for excess single-use plastic that ends up in the Ganges and then our oceans. He did so by stand-up paddleboard, becoming the first person to ever do so by this means, engaging with numerous WaterAid projects along the way.
2:45 – 3:45 pm Room 2
Panel: Sustainable Sponsorship, Brands and the PR Greenwash Wobblies!Moderator: Sangeeta Waldron (Serendipity PR)
Speakers: Gary Pitt (Alive Activations); Adam Pearson (O2 Arena); Zac Fox (Kilimanjaro Live); Jacqueline Hochreiter (Budweiser Brewing Group).
About this session: There are many wasteful “norms” in the behaviour of our industry that need to be addressed. How often do we see items manufactured and disposed of after a few days or even hours use due to branding and activations for event sponsorship? As the world wakes up to our responsibilities and the visible marks of our consumption footprint on the world, it has never been more essential for brands to really walk the talk, or brace for the accusations of greenwash.
Alongside leading brands, Award-winning PR Specialist and Author, Sangeeta Waldron, and brand activations expert Gary Pitt (Alive Activation, UK) lift the lid on what impacts brands are having, who is pushing boundaries, what is the best practice, and where we go from here. Jacqueline Hochreiter gives insight to the core sustainability goals from a Budweiser Brewing Group (BBG) perspective and how that is extended to their broader eco-system. Adam Pearson shares about the creation of Good Vibes at The O2, and Zac Fox brings a wealth of experience from the promoters perspective having worked with over 50 brands (from drinks to guitars to toilet paper and a myriad of other products and services) across a similar number of events.
A Greener Festival has teamed up with Alive Activation to build a platform that helps brands, agencies and events put sustainability at the forefront of these operations in order to reduce their environmental impact. The launch of the Greener Activation platform, along with findings from the Industry survey will be shared during this session.
Agenda
12 GEI 12
3:50 – 4:20 pm Room 3
Breakout Session: Butterfly Effect Of Change – Packaging, Water & SanitationHost: Jane Healy (Glastonbury Festival / Healy Productions)
Speaker: Jack Beerens (MSS International)
Like in any good game of snooker, when making changes for greener events it is important to think a few shots ahead. When one part of a system is altered how does it affect the
rest of the system? Perhaps there are additional provisions or alterations that need to be considered, or departments to consult. From water supply for refills, to sanitation for reusables, this session illustrates this importance with a few examples of how new “green” solutions have exposed further needs for adaptation.
4:00 – 4:20 pm Room 4
IPM Production Note: Danger Danger, High Voltage: A Sustainable Power UpdateHosted by: Nadja Henkel, Maya Event AG (Liechtenstein) & Tim Benson, SMART Power Ltd
With so much power in the house it would be waste of energy not to get several sparkies in one room for a brief session about the latest
developments in electricity usage at events.
4:30 – 5:45 pm Room 2
Panel: A Greener Tour – Round 2! (Presented by Forum Karlin & Metronome)
Moderator: Gordon Masson, IQ Magazine
Speakers: Coralie Berael (Forest National Arena); Emma Banks (CAA); Tom Chauncey (Partisan Arts); Tanner Watt (REVERB); Rebecca Travis (RT Tour Management) and Patricia Yagüe (Live Nation).
A year on since the lively session at GEI11, in which Paradigm (formerly Coda) and AGF launched the Green Artist Rider. Now not a week passes where this topic doesn’t
reach headlines. Coldplay pause touring over eco-concerns, Massive Attack to analyse the impact of their tours, Billie Eilish makes moves to eliminate plastic from gigs. Working groups have been convened across all parts of the Live industry to tackle green issues. Live Nations “Green Nation” and AEG 1Earth are in full swing.
In “A Greener Tour – Round 2” we explore what artists, agents, promoters, venues, tour managers and production companies about actions, obstacles and opportunities to reduce emissions, reduce waste, address fundamental changes, and strive for positive impacts.

A Greener Activation
OVERVIEW
Today’s event audiences expect interactive
and shareable experiences, as well as
unforgettable memories. As consumers
become increasingly aware of ethical issues,
brands must respect this and continue to
demonstrate their credentials when activating
brand experiences. Brands and their agencies
have the opportunity to make a significant
difference and deliver a powerful positive
force through their activations.Working in the
events industry for 20 years we’ve witnessed
sustainability being pushed up the agenda
by Councils, consumers and communities.
We have noticed a concerning disconnect
between brands’ sustainable policies and the
activations they produce at events. Frustrated
by the mistakes being made and the damage
being done, we decided to look into the
brand activation processes in order to develop
services which the industry can utilise to reduce
environmental damage.A Greener Activation is
a collaboration between Alive Activation and A
Greener Festival. We provide brands, agencies
and producers access to a global network of
assessors, consultants, training, guides and
reports. Our certification will help brands to
monitor their impact and offer advice on how
to lighten their carbon footprint.
METHODOLOGY
A n invite to be part of an industry survey
was sent out to over 7,000 sponsorship
professionals, event rights owners, agencies
and production companies. The link was
distributed as part of the Think! Sponsorship
newsletter in December 2019. It was also
sent via A Greener Festivals database and
social media channels and via personal
invites. The survey was live for two
months. The full results can be accessed at
www.agreeneractivation.com

Responsible Venues
GREEN EVENTS AND INNOVATIONS CONFERENCE 2020
Waste management, and especially reduction
is a number one priority. With one show after the
other it can quickly build. Finding ways to reduce
packaging and deliveries will automatically
reduce transport needs and CO2 emission.
Third parties should only remain part of the
business model if they are helping venues to
find solutions to become more sustainable.
Especially for F&B partners, we will want to
know origin, production process, packaging,
transport, waste destiny. Too often sponsors
leave huge amounts of goodie bags, gadgets,
flyers, etc… and other waste behind for the
venue to deal with.
Sustainable event management is also
about creating awareness across all venue
stakeholders: visitors, venue staff and
production crew but especially the artists
and their management. Venue staff as well
as returning visitors (average 3 times a year)
and artists, benefit from continuous education
and going back to basics. Simplifying the
music setting which requires less trucks and
more responsible (local) merchandising, less
transport mileage, helps.
Visitors are becoming more demanding on
this topic. And for those who haven’t yet, we
could have a massive impact on their behaviour
through leading by example and ‘learning at
the venue’. A venue can be as inspiring as an
artist passing a powerful message to his crowd.
FOREST NATIONAL
ARENA (BRUSSELS)
S ince jamming 10,000 people into an 8.000
capacity venue for a Rolling Stones concert
in 1973, the venue has undertaken multiple
renovations over the years focusing on
compliancy with building regulations, safety &
security guidelines. Unlike the original venue
licence today’s licence is based on sustainable
engagement and reflects changing priorities.
With a ‘green’ Mayor elected in 2018 the
local Council are very concerned about
environmental issues. The venue landscape
has changed!
For the last 10 years, we developed a strong
mobility policy with public transport integrated
in ticketing and created alternative solutions
to sorting waste and group orders, invested
in 1000L beer tanks and softmix systems. A
new type of cup developed in partnership
Inbev/Coca-Cola will help us reach our goal
of 90% recycled waste. The next renovation
project will be exclusively sustainable based
on water recuperation, renewable energy and
sustainable restrooms.
SUSTAINABILITY
CHARTER
S ince April 2019, Forest National has
become a Live Nation venue and using the
new Green Nation Sustainability Charter as
the main guidance for quantifying efforts in
terms of waste / water / energy management,
transport, procurement, etc… it will enable us
to have clear objectives and action plans.
A GREENER ARENA
Inspired by A Greener Festival (AGF) Award
and the great work of the AGF assessors
coaching event organisations across European
and International Festivals towards a more
sustainable event, the expertise and system will
be transposed onto venues in the near future.
We are keen to work with AGF to develop this
new tool and looking forward to exchange
ideas and processes with other European
venues and beyond.
20
As green is the new rock n roll, venues can
play their part in organising sustainable
events but have their own challenges.
Facilities management of a ‘green’ building
has become more complex, often requiring
major long-term investments (replacing and
installing dry toilets or reservoirs and filtering
systems, insulating the entire building,…)
but there are a lot of simple gestures that do
not need to cost that much such as keeping a
strict lights-out policy, monitoring energy use,
replacing lightbulbs with LED, etc.
