Where did the time go? Seems likeonly yesterday I had my first datewith the skinny, handsome Citadel
quarterback; married him after graduationthree years later; and 26 years after that wefound ourselves bringing our youngestson, Brad, to The Citadel as he began hisfour years as a cadet.
And now, 36 years after that first date, Iam sitting here as the president’s wifewriting this letter to you all. It has beenquite a journey and I cannot think ofanother place I would rather be.
Life takes us on many journeys in ourlives and The Citadel has been a very large
part of this journey for our family. Cominghere as a cadet, as John did, and as agirlfriend, as I was, cannot compare to thetime when we brought Brad here. We wereall apprehensive and a bit fearful. But mostof all we were excited about his decisionto attend The Citadel as we knew what thisleg of the journey would mean to Brad andhis future,
Was is hard? You bet it was!! Did hewant to quit a time or two or three? Youbet he did!! But he didn’t because, as Bradtold us later, “I wanted to prove to myselfthat I could persevere and get through thetough times so I would have the right to
wear the ring proudly and graduate.”When Brad graduated in 2003, we all
knew the journey had been worth it. WithThe Citadel ring proudly on his finger, hethen began the next phase of his life’sjourney knowing he had done his best andhaving never given up.
I know each of you will feel this sameapprehension as you bring your son ordaughter here. It will be tough and it

sometimes need a “home away from home away fromthe barracks.” Knobs from more than 200 miles awayare given the opportunity to request a sponsor family. Those from the farthest away are given priority.
If you have questions, please call Mrs. MaryAnn Dorton, Office of Cadet Activities, 843-953-7776.
Sponsor families offer their homes; a listening ear; long, hot showers, an uninterrupted nap and the ever-welcome non-messhall meal to Knobs.

MMiilleessttoonneess iinn aa KKnnoobb’’ss ffiirrsstt sseemmeesstteerrMatriculation Day (Sat., August 12) —This is the day to report to The Citadel.Drive up to Johnson Hagood Stadiumand a member of the Cadre will give youa card with a letter on it. This is yourchild’s company assignment. Report tothe appropriate barracks and find theopen sallyport (or gate). Your CadetRecruit will sign in, receive his/her roomassignment and you can begin movinginto the room. Be prepared: your childmay be assigned the Fourth Division(floor). Dress comfortably. Charlestoncan be hot and muggy and the steps getpretty steep after a few trips to and fromthe car. Another tip: try to avoid displaysof emotion in front of upperclassmen.
After moving in, you are invitedto meet with religious officers andleaders. Join your Cadet Recruit for lunchin the mess hall and then attend aninformation fair. Before you know it, itwill be time to say goodbye and head tothe CFA Picnic at The Citadel BeachHouse on the Isle of Palms.
Parents’ Weekend (Fri. - Sun., Oct 20 -22) — This is when your Cadet Recruitofficially joins the Corps of Cadets in aceremony this weekend. It’s also yourfirst chance to spend a fair amount oftime with your son or daughter sinceMatriculation Day two months earlier. The barracks will also be open for yourinspection. Try to make a special effort toattend and devote some “normal”family time. If you can notpersonally attend, see ifa Sponsor Family canhelp. Call yourcompany’s CFArepresentative (seeinside).
Homecoming Weekend (Fri. - Sun.,November 10 - 12) — Parades, parties,football.
Holiday Furlough (after the last examuntil January 7)
Since Knobs do not usuallycome home for the weekends, theUnited States Postal Service can bea tangible link between you andyour son or daughter. (Emails areone thing. Energy bars andpowdered drinks are another.) Bythe way, Knobs may earn the
privilege of a phone secondsemester. Keep those gradesup, Young Knobs.
The USPS offers avariety of boxes for free. The #1 box will fit in a
knobbie bag (i.e.; soft-sided briefcase all Cadets carry) and is lesslikely to be “shared” withupperclass cadets.
These boxes are available at all Post Offices, including thecampus Post Office in Mark Clark Hall.
