Right now, our city faces a $400 million deficit that threatens to shut down basic city servicespolice, fire, gang prevention, 911 emergency response and transportation improvements. Meanwhile, our politicians are taking pay raises, free cars, and millions of dollars in special interest contributions from developers, lawyers and lobbyists. Waste, fraud and abuse are rampant in City Hall and were paying the price. Hundreds of millions of dollars have been wasted over the years in fees paid to outside attorneys and multi-million-dollar settlements. Its time to change Los Angeles. In particular, its time to change and reform the Los Angeles City Attorneys Office. Not for the sake of change, but for our children, our families and our future. We need a City Attorney who will be bold, take risks, challenge the status quo and fundamentally change the way we do business in City Hall. Its time we made City Hall work again for the peoplenot the politicians. People say I cant beat the Villaraigosa/Weiss machine. That you cant fight the power of City Hall. C

armen Nuch Trutanich grew up in the South Los Angeles town of San Pedro. He attended elementary and high school in San Pedro. Carmens parents are first generation Americans from Croatia and Italy. Carmens father worked as a laborer at Starkist FDS on Terminal Island, retiring as the General Manager of the Terminal Island Tuna Packaging Plant. His mother was a stay at home mom, who, with the help of his maternal grandparents raised seven children. His family has resided in the same location throughout his youth and high school. To this date, all but one of his siblings still resides in the Harbor Area. Throughout high school and college, Carmen worked double shifts on the water front and the cannery to help pay for his education. Carmen attended USC for both his undergraduate and post-graduate degree in Business Administration. After receiving his MBA, Carmen went to work at Starkist. While working at StarKist, he found time to teach at Los Angeles Harbor and Marymount Community Colleges where he taught Business Management, Business Law, Real Estate Law, and Supervision Management. He possesses a Life Credential to teach college in California. During this time Carmen watched crime increase in his community where he saw young people seduced by drugs and gangs. As a teacher and proud resident of Los Angeles, Carmen decided to attend night school to earn his law degree with the hope of one day serving his community as a criminal prosecutor to fight crime.

n 1981, Carmen Trutanich proudly became a Los Angeles County Deputy District Attorney. Carmen worked hard and successfully prosecuted major cases against robbers, rapists, child molesters and drug dealers. He earned numerous commendations. Carmen asked to be assigned to the Hard Core Gang Division in South Los Angeles. In the early 80s, South Los Angeles was considered ground zero for rock and crack cocaine dealers and the most violent street gangs including the Crips and Bloods. Carmen worked long hours for Los Angeles County. He dedicated himself to becoming an accomplished trial attorney and handling numerous gang murders. As a Deputy D.A., trying cases was Carmens passion. When the new District Attorney was elected, he recognized Carmens skills as a tough prosecutor. The newly-elected District Attorney transferred him from the gang unit to his newly created, premiere section, in the Environmental Crimes/OSHA Division. Carmen was the environmental units premier trial attorney at the time. However, Carmen refused to be transferred from the Gang Unit unless he could take a Capital Murder Gang Case with him. To this day, he is the only Deputy D.A. to receive a death verdict while assigned to the environmental crimes unit.

s an environmental prosecutor, Carmen tried the first felony environmental crime in the State of For 2 years as a deputy district attorney, California and received a conviction on all counts. Having three children and coming from a strong sports background in high school and college, Carmen volunteered to become the regional commissioner for AYSO Soccer and served his community with pride. He lobbied for free fields for AYSO, and established a due process procedure for red cards, which is still used today within his old region. As a regional commissioner he helped established one of the first programs for handicapped children in AYSO. I served for many years as a senior prosecutor in the Hardcore Gang Unit of the Los Angeles County District Attorneys Office, where I successfully tried and convicted the most serious and violent gang members in this City, including cases against murderers, rapists, drive-by shooters, robbers, burglars, and drug dealers.
