Top price of the day was 211p/kg and £1,359 for a 644kg Limousin x steer from Mr. A.M.C. Eddy of St. Erth purchased by Chris Dale for his Helston Butcher’s Shop. Heifers selling to a premium of £2/kg for a British Blue x from Messrs. A.R. & B. & A. Hosking of St. Martin bought by J.V. Richards Ltd of Perranwell Station and a top value of £1,247 for a 667kg heifer from an entry of Limousins for Mr. R.E. Richards of St. Keverne selling to Trevarthens of Roskrow.

A steady entry of cull cows but generally good quality which saw improved prices and overall averages. Insufficient numbers forward generally for the trade. An entry of cows from Messrs. M.R. & M. Hampden-Smith of Newmill led the beef sorts to 128p/kg for a cracking young Limousin x. A super show of dairy cull cows with most 700kg+ saw the top four averages all for S.D. James & Co. of Summercourt selling to a premium of 118p/kg to Trevarthens of Roskrow and their heaviest 811kg cow realising £949 to Dawn West Devon of Hatherleigh.

STORE CATTLE

The best entry of store cattle of the year so far met a decent trade with a good number of buyers around the ring. Well forward cattle were selling exceptionally well with South Devon x 2 year old steers from Messrs. D. Trewern & Son of St. Levan leading the day with pairs at £1,200 and £1,090. Splitting them at £1,190 was a single steer from an entry of Limousins for Mr. R.E. Richards of St. Keverne who also led the heifers with a 23 month old pair at £990 apiece. Also for Messrs. D. Trewern & Son, a run of British Blue yearlings which saw standout single steer at £885 and a smart pair of heifers reach £690. Eight yearling Limousins from Mr. D. Martin of Manaccan saw a pair of steers to £820 and best heifer duo £650.

Truro Livestock Market was visited this week by a representative of the Farmers Guardian. They are to do an editorial feature on the market to run shortly in the magazine – keep an eye out as they took photographs of not only the stock but many of the faces around the ring. For the opportunity of doing this the Farmers Guardian sponsored the top price prime cattle, store cattle and hogs each in the sum of £50 with winners as follows:
