Commitment Weekend Commitment Weekend here at St. John’s will take place November 7/8 as we return our completed 2016 Financial Pledge Cards and Time, Talent, and Touch Ministry Forms. Stewardship packets were mailed this past week. Please prayerfully consider your generous response to support Christ’s mission and ministry in and through St. John’s. Especially as we look to calling a third full-time pastor in 2016, your response is needed! Join with us as we grow in relationship with Christ, with each other, and with our community! “When Jesus came to the place, he looked up and said to him, ‘Zacchaeus, hurry and come down; for I must stay at your house today’” (Luke 19:5). The story of Zacchaeus is one of my favorite stories in all of Scripture. Perhaps it’s because of the song I learned in Sunday School about that “wee little man.” Or, perhaps it’s because of the gracious invitation Jesus so freely extends to that man up in the tree, inviting himself into Zacchaeus’ house. Or, perhaps it’s because of Zacchaeus’ radically generous response to Jesus’ invitation, giving half of his possessions to the poor and paying back everyone whom he had cheated. Whatever the reason, it’s a story that for me summarizes the relationship Jesus desires with all of us, a relationship that begins with God’s gracious invitation but then extends outward in generosity and sharing with others. It’s certainly a story that ties in with our new vision here at St. John’s and, particularly, with the fourth action recommendation for growing into this new vision. Action Recommendation #4 Grow our worship life, including an intentional focus on equipping people for disciple- ship to Christ through worship and developing worship experiences beyond the walls of St. John’s that invite others into a relationship with Christ. As disciples of Jesus, we are called to take the good news of Jesus’ love and grace outside the walls of St. John’s so that we might invite others into this same life-giving, life-transforming, life-saving relationship. The good news of Jesus’ love is just too good not to share! I often share the story I once heard of a chicken sandwich shop that tried to expand their business by offering free samples of their chicken sandwich to their customers. The problem with this marketing plan was that the shop’s customers already knew how good their chicken sandwich was. The shop should have been giving away free samples of their chicken sandwich to those who had not yet tried it. All too often, the church is like that chicken sandwich shop. We spend almost all our time and energy sharing the story of Jesus with those who are already inside the church and who already know the story. Wouldn’t it make more sense to share the story of Jesus’ love with those who have not yet heard it? Wouldn’t it make more sense to go to those who aren’t yet connected with a church and invite them? Wouldn’t it make more sense to share God’s grace with those who have not already received it? The answer to these questions is, of course, a resounding “Yes!” The challenge is, how- ever, that doing so requires us to think and act differently as church. Doing so requires us to continually step outside our comfort zones. Doing so requires us to take risks for the sake of the gospel, even when doing so means that we occasionally fail. As we live into our new vision here at St. John’s, we are being called to step boldly forward, inviting others into a relationship with Christ, with one another, and with our community. We already know how amazing God’s grace is. Let’s find ever new ways to share God’s grace with those who, like Zacchaeus, don’t. Growing in Relationship Midweek Sprout! Welcome to St. John’s Lutheran Church on this Reformation Weekend. We gather around Word and Sacrament to be filled and renewed by the Holy Spirit and to grow together in our relationships with Christ, with one another, and with our community. We are glad you are here! If you do not yet have a church home in Springfield and are interested in becoming part of St. John’s, we invite you to visit with one of our pastors. Our theme this fall is Ready...Set...GROW! In today’s gospel reading from Luke, Jesus invites Zacchaeus into relationship and, as a result, Zacchaeus’ life is transformed. Through Word and Sacrament, Jesus invites us into a life-transforming relationship, calling us to follow him in lives of discipleship and service.

Jr/Sr High LYO Youth Gathering 2015 (November 13-15) at Lake Williamson Christian Center in Carlinville is still accepting applications. The focus is the fruit of the Spirit, based on Galatians 5:22-23. Registration is $160. Please see Ashlynne if you are interested and/or need financial assistance.

Senior High Bible Study will take a break on Wednesday, October 28to participate in TRUNK or TREAT! See you in the parking lot for a festive night of laughs, dinner, and of course- CANDY!

Encounter- A 7th-12th grade Worship Experience The GREAT EXCHANGETHIS Sunday, October 25, 6:00-8:00 p.m.Worship, Coffee Bar, Snacks, a message by Ashlynne, and small groups! This weekend’s Encounter helps remind us that living the exchanged life is difficult. It’s not easy. Some of this difficulty comes from dealing with our sinful nature. Some of this difficulty comes from dealing with the persecution of others. It’s tough. But the Bible never says it would be any other way! We can take hope from this promise. Ultimately, our greatest hope is from the final exchange God will make when He ushers in a perfect eternity with Him, free from sin and suffering. This promise helps us make it when times are tough! Come be in community with others as we live out the GREAT EXCHANGE!

Why is Grace So Amazing?Everyone is invited to join us on Sunday mornings from 9:15-10:15 a.m. in the Adult Meeting Room (AMR) for the Adult Forum as we explore the question, “Why is Grace So Amazing?” Pastor Greg, Pastor Ladd, and St. John’s disciple Reggie Wagner co-lead this engaging Bible study looking at key texts that help us more fully understand this core teaching of our Lutheran faith. This week’s theme is “How can I get along with others--even when I don’t feel like it” based on 1 Thessalonians 5:12-22. All are welcome!

Baking with Jesus - New Small Group If you like to bake or are willing to learn to bake, then this is the small group for you! We will be meeting once a month for a small devotion and then a baking project. The final products will then be distributed to whomever is in need, our shut-ins, etc. The day and time is still TBA, but would last about 1.5-2 hours, depending on that month’s baking project. If you are interested, please contact Eleana Fielding at (516) 761.8689 or [email protected].

Stitch and ShareWe are organizing a new small group at St John’s - sewing items to be donated where needed! If you are interested in being a part, please call or email Elena Bee at [email protected] or Mary Ann DeFend at [email protected].

Knitting and Crocheting Ministries meet every Sunday morning at 9:15 a.m. in the Parish Life Center Lobby. If you are wanting to learn, they will help you and if you need yarn, they have some for you to use. Call Lynne Ewan at 546.9632 and she will answer any questions you may have.
