As mentioned in the March-April issue of the TRUMPET, we will

devote this article to the Saints whose relics now reside in the

Holy Altar table of our church. The relics are: St. Panteleimon,

St. Barbara and St. Kyrikos. The following has been condensed

from the book “Orthodox Saints” written by Fr. George Poulos:

“The Holy Relics of the martyred Saints that have been placed

in the Altar Table of a church is a reminder that the church

community is founded on the deep love, devotion and ultimate

sacrifice of good Christian men and women for almost 2,000

years. Their presence must be honored, respected…”

The Consecration of a church and its Holy Altar offers us an

opportunity to bear witness to these

Saints, their love, dedication and

sacrifice. It reminds us of a legacy of

faith, service and commitment that

has been in existence, not in terms

of years, decades or centuries, but

rather millennia. They are a constant

reminder that ultimately good will

triumph over evil.

St. Panteleimon was a young doctor

born in the third century in Asia Minor.

His father was a pagan, from whom

he inherited his profound intellect, and his mother was a

Christian of great spiritual awareness. Together, Panteleimon’s

parents provided him with the skill and dedication to become

a physician of remarkable ability. His fine reputation drew the

attention of the Emperor Maximilian increasing his renown.

Reminded, however, by a pious Christian named Ermolaos

that “from the Most High comes healing”, Panteleimon openly

proclaimed that his power of healing was not attributable to

physician skill alone, but to divine intervention as well. As

his reputation grew, he became known more as a man of God

than of science, bringing upon him instead, the wrath of the

emperor. When given the choice between Christ and the idols,

Panteleimon reaffirmed his Christian identity. After he survived

several attempts to torture and kill him, he was beheaded. St.

Panteleimon gave his life for Christ on July 27th, the day that

we honor as his feast day.

St. Barbara was born in the early third century. Her father was

a pagan named Dioskoros who was convinced that Christianity

was his worst enemy. Barbara, however, managed to find

truth in the teachings of Christ and was secretly baptized.

She continued to pray and practice her faith concealing it

from her father out of parental respect. Eventually, her

father found out and was instrumental in her brutal death. All

accounts record that Barbara’s father was killed by a bolt of

lightning while on his way back home from the execution of his

daughter. St. Barbara could have saved herself when she was

given the opportunity to appease her father by denying her

Savior, but instead, she chose to proclaim her faith to him. St.

Barbara is recognized as the patroness of firefighters and those

in hazardous occupations. Her feast

day is celebrated on December 4th.

St. Kyrikos was the three-year

old son of St. Julitta. Fearing the

persecution of Diocletian, she left

the city of Iconium and took her son

to Seleucia; but finding the same

evil there, she went over to Tarsus

in Cilicia where the magistrate had

her arrested. He took her son from

her and tried to persuade him to

denounce his mother. Kyrikos, in his

childish voice, called upon the name of Christ and kicked the

magistrate in the belly so hard, that the tyrant became

enraged and cast him down a long staircase. The child

suffered severe blows to the head and died. As for his

mother, she endured many torments and finally was

beheaded in the year 296. We commemorate them on

July 15th.

In His Service and Love,

Fr. Dennis Strouzas

Through March 31st, 2015, we have seen a 3% increase in the

number of our active stewards, to 318, versus last year. These

318 active stewards have pledged $265,000, an increase from

$235,000 last year at this time, an encouraging 13% increase.

This combination of more active stewards pledging higher

amounts signifies that our community is engaged in the won-

derful work being done by our organizations and shows sup-

port for our ministries, which are funded from Stewardship

commitments. With a budgeted goal of achieving $550,000 in

stewardship pledges for 2015, we are hopeful the early prog-

ress seen so far will continue and enable us to achieve our

ambitious goals.

We want to take this opportunity to thank all of the stewards

in our community for their ongoing support.

The Saints are In the Holy Altar, the Priest is At the Altar, and We, the Holy People of God, are

On the Altar

The title of this message is inspired not only by our present reality at the Archangel Michael Church but also by a subheading from a chapter in a book by Fr. Anthony Coniaris titled Introducing the Orthodox Faith: Its Faith and Life (an incredibly practical primer on Orthodoxy). The chapter deals with the Divine Liturgy and initially focuses on the bread offering or prosphoro, which is of course essential to the Eucharist (a.k.a. Holy Communion) which in turn is the heart and soul of every Divine Liturgy. What we may not realize is that if we truly believe that the Body of Christ is on the altar at every Liturgy, then that means that indeed, WE are on the altar—after all, St. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians chapter 12 that “[we] are the body of Christ and individually members of it.”

This belief is echoed elsewhere in scripture and in our Orthodox teachings. As members of what St. Peter calls in his first epistle “a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people…” and within the Orthodox Church generally, we are encouraged to “commit ourselves and one another and our whole life to Christ our God” (from the Divine Liturgy of St. John Chrysostom). To put it another way, we are all about offering: consider the bread and wine offered up to God which become the Body and Blood of Christ; listen to the voices of praise of our choirs and people being lifted up to God in song; recall any one of the many raising up or elevating movements in our worship e.g. the blessing Cross, the kouvouklion at Pascha; and of course, think of our hearts at every liturgy (“Let us lift up our hearts”). The Greek word we use to capture and communicate this distinctive posture toward our Creator is “anaphora.”

The Eucharistic anaphora (a.k.a. offering or sacrifice) begins immediately following the creed with “Let us

stand well. Let us stand in awe. Let us be attentive, that we may present the holy offering in peace.” This comes from the Greek word anaphero which in one sense means “to carry” or “bring up, to lead up” and in another sense, has the meaning “to put upon the altar, to bring to the altar, to offer” and still in another, “to place on one’s self anything as a load to be supported or sustained.” This is why just prior to the priest lifting up the paten and chalice, he intones on behalf of the faithful “We offer to You these gifts from Your own gifts in all and for all.”

To take it a step further, if we are in fact both the “body of Christ” and a “royal priesthood” then that means that we offer sacrifices in imitation of Christ

crucified and Risen. We offer gifts that we have received from Him. The Archangel Michael Church community has done just that from its earliest days—offered and sacrificed and a crowning moment in this story of sacrifice, of faithful and dedicated Christian witness was made manifest on the altar at the Consecration services of April 24th and 25th. And so as we reflect on the decades,

years, days and weeks leading up to the Consecration, may we always remember the continuous posture that we ought to have toward our Creator and Giver of life and every good thing—that of lifting up to Him all that originates with Him…namely our love, our thanks, our commitment, and our whole lives. In this way, we will always find ourselves on the Holy Altar, together with the saints, drawing near to Christ our God, and emboldened to carry out His work, to become the “body of Christ” for the salvation of the world.

In the Light and Love of our Lord,

Fr. Nikolas Karloutsos

News & Events

Our beloved Archangel Michael Church was transformed over the weekend of April 24-25, 2015. What follows is a summary of the significance of the events of the Consecration service.

The Consecration began on Friday evening, April 24, 2015. While holding white candles, children from each of our youth programs lined the center aisle of the church. When His Grace Bishop Andonios entered the Church on Friday evening, he brought with him the relics of three Saints: Saint Barbara the Great Martyr (December 4th), Saint Kyrikos the Martyr (July 15th), and Saint Panteleimon the Great Martyr and Healer (July 27th), which would be permanently sealed in our altar. These relics were placed on a Paten (Diskarion) and covered with a communion veil, which remained on the Altar Table overnight, along with a Vigil Light. As he entered in procession into the narthex, His Grace led a short prayer service honoring the memory of the three Saints, followed by a Vespers service. In addition to His Grace, ten priests and two deacons honored our community with their presence that evening to share in the joy of this historic event. Following the Vespers service, the community joined in fellowship at a reception hosted by the Ladies Philoptochos.

On Saturday morning, the service of Orthros (Matins) began with the reading of six Psalms (3, 37, 62, 87,102,142) and ended with the Great Doxology. During Orthros, both resurrec-tion and consecration hymns were sung. Father Dennis and nu-merous other clergy (Bishop Andonios, six visiting priests, and three deacons) celebrated part of the Proskomidi Service (pre-paring the Gifts which will be used during the Divine Liturgy).

His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios was greeted outside the church and presented with spring flowers by students from the Archangel Michael Greek Language Institute. His Eminence then entered the Church and put on his vestments. At the end of Orthros, His Eminence began the Service of Consecration by offering prayers for the Holy Relics.

Following these prayers, Archbishop Demetrios and clergy, to-

gether with all faithful in attendance, prepared for three pro-

cessions around the Church. These processions represent the

setting aside of an area which will be separate and sacred from

all other areas. The procession was led by the acolytes, choirs,

the Clergy, with Fr. Nikolas carrying the Icon of the three Saints

and Fr. Dennis carrying the Holy Gospel, Archbishop Demetrios

carrying the Holy Relics on the Paten, and the faithful, thus

leaving the church empty. As the church was circled, the choirs

sang special Consecration Hymns and Agios O Theos.

The first two processions stopped at the front of the church at

which time there was an Epistle reading and a Reading from

the Holy Gospel. After the final procession, before re-enter-

ing the church, Archbishop Demetrios offered a dialogue from

Psalm 24, representing Christ the King entering and taking

over the Church building by defeating the power of the devil.

Archbishop Demetrios knocked on the door of the church with

his staff and said: “Lift up the gates, O you rulers, and be

lifted up, you everlasting doors, and the King of glory shall

enter.” Father Peter Karloutsos was the only person inside

the church and representing an Angel, responded with: “Who

is this King of Glory?” to which Archbishop Demetrios replied,

“The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory.”

Archbishop Demetrios raised the Paten and made the sign of the Cross three times in front of the church doors, which were then opened and all proceeded back inside the church. Arch-bishop Demetrios entered the Sanctuary, carrying the Paten with the Holy Relics. He uncovered the Paten and placed the Holy Relics in a small box. He then poured Holy Chrism over the Relics. This symbolizes the union between our Lord and his Martyrs and at the conclusion, Archbishop Demetrios offered prayers for the deceased founders of the Church. It is important to remember that in the early years of Christi-anity, the Church was not allowed to exist, and Christians were persecuted and killed. In those days, Christians met in underground burial places and celebrated the Eucharist on the graves of the martyred and the Saints. Over time, when the Church was permitted to exist, and when these persecu-tions ended, the custom of celebrating the Eucharist over the graves of the martyrs continued by placing the Holy Relics in the Altar at the time of Consecration. In this manner, we are always reminded that the Church was built on the Blood of the Martyrs and their faith in the Lord.

The Consecration centers around the Holy Altar Table, since it represents all of the Sacraments and services of the Church. Archbishop Demetrios offered prayers for God’s help to con-tinue with the service and then placed the box containing the Holy Relics into a special cavity in the Altar. In order to permanently seal them, Archbishop Demetrios poured wax

melted

with mastic over them. The wax and mastic contain sweet smelling and fragrant spices, which were used by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus to anoint the Body of Christ in prep-aration for his burial. The Holy Altar represents the Tomb in which our Lord’s body was placed. Archbishop Demetrios re-moved the excess wax, and the placing of the Holy Relics in the Altar Table was completed.

Archbishop Demetrios prepared the Altar Table to be anointed. Since the Altar Table represents the Tomb of Christ and His body, the Altar must undergo its own “Baptism”, or washing, and “Chrismation”, or anointing. Before washing and anoint-ing the Altar Table, Archbishop Demetrios put on a white gar-ment called a Savanon, blessed the water brought forth, and poured it on the Altar three times saying: “In the name of the Father, the Son and Holy Spirit.” This act symbolizes Baptism: the Altar is cleaned by washing, and sanctified (made holy) by the grace of the Holy Spirit. After washing, the Altar Table was dried. During this time, Psalm 83 was being read. Archbishop Demetrios then sprinkled rosewater on the Altar. The rosewa-ter is sweet smelling and was used to anoint the Body of Christ for burial. Archbishop Demetrios continued the rest of Psalm 50 while the Altar was wiped dry by the assisting priests using new white towels to do so.

Archbishop Demetrios anointed the Altar with Holy Chrism, once in the center and then on either side while singing “Al-leluia” three times. He spread the Holy Chrism over the entire Altar Table as he recited a section from Psalm 132. The priests then wiped the excess Chrism with new, soon to be used An-timinsia. Next, icons of the four Evangelists were fastened to the Altar, one in each corner. The completed Altar represents the entire Church, from which the four corners of the world are held together by the Lord, and is built on Him through the preaching of the Gospel. Following the anointing, Archbishop Demetrios began the vesting (putting on the new coverings) of the Altar table.

The Altar table was then covered with the “Katasarkion”, a white linen cloth that represents our Lord’s burial shroud. The Kataskarion was tied with a cord that represents the cord with which our Lord’s hands were tied as he stood before the High Priests. The Kataskarion will never be removed and will remain on the Altar for as long as the Church remains stand-ing. During this time, Psalm 131 was read. Once completed, Archbishop Demetrios said, “Glory to You our God unto ages of ages.” He washed his hands and covered the Altar Table with a brighter and more elaborate cover which symbolizes the glory of God, and proceeded to place the other holy articles on the Altar Table. First he placed the Corporal (Antiminsion); on top of this was placed the Gospel Book, representing the teachings of Christ, followed by the Tabernacle (Artophorion), in which the Body and Blood of our Lord was placed and is re-served for Communion of the sick. The Artophorion is symbol-ic of the presence of our Lord. Finally, the candlesticks were placed last and represent the light of Christ that shines forth.

Once the Altar has been consecrated, sanctified and adorned with all its furnishings, the Altar and the entire Church were censed with incense. Archbishop Demetrios and Bishop An-donios then anointed the four walls of the Church and the Holy Icons, and made the sign of the Cross on them with Holy Chrism. This act symbolized the sanctification of all creation with the grace of Christ.

Archbishop Demetrios blessed the faithful and offered ad-ditional prayers for the Altar Table. After this, Archbishop Demetrios and Bishop Andonios removed the Savana, which were presented to the Ladies Philoptochos to be cut up into small pieces and given to each person in attendance as a keep-sake. The Divine Liturgy continued from this point forward.

At the conclusion of the Consecration service and the Divine Liturgy, Archbishop Demetrios offered his thanks and prayers for our Church. As part of his remarks, he offered a suprise to Father Dennis and to our entire community. Father Den-nis already holds the honored distinction of “Protopresybter”, which was bestowed upon him by Archbishop Spyridon. Arch-bishop Demetrios announced that Father Dennis was elevated to the rank of Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, which means that his All-Holiness Patriarch Bartholomew be-stowed this distinction upon him. Axios!

Immediately following the service, our community hosted a Consecration Luncheon. Over 350 faithful gathered to share food and fellowship in the transformed Archangel Michael Gymnasium. Attendees were welcomed by Parish Council President, Michael Cavounis, Father Dennis and local dignitar-ies including Town of North Hempstead Supervisor Judi Bos-worth, Nassau County Comptroller George Maragos, and Act-ing Nassau County District Attorney Madeline Singas. Everyone then enjoyed seeing a brief history of our Archangel Michael community on a DVD presentation followed by a 3D Virtual Reality Tour of the Church complex.

Following a Consecration service, the Divine Liturgy is meant to be celebrated 7 times. Father Dennis and Father Nikolas celebrated the Divine Liturgy every day through Saturday, May 2, 2015.

This event was truly historic and unforgettable. To consecrate a church means to initiate the edifice into the service of God and to set it apart for exclusive use as a “House of Worship”. Once a church building is consecrated it remains a place of Christian worship for as long as it exists. We are blessed to be in our newly consecrated church and mindful of the signifi-cance of these events.

“And now abide faith, hope and love these three but the greatest is love.” 1 Corinthians 13:13

The glorious day that we had all been waiting for, with God’s help, has been completed. Thank you to all Philoptochos mem-bers for their love and hard work in making the Consecration so successful. We hosted a lovely reception following the Ves-pers Service on Friday evening, April 24th. On Saturday, April 25th, it was a privilege and an honor to prepare the Savana in beautiful white boxes that were distributed to the faithful by His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios.

We very much enjoyed the celebration of Mother’s Day on May

10th. Many thanks to the gentlemen of the Parish Council who

sponsored the coffee hour and served all of our parishioners.

On June 7th, at 8:45 am, we will hold our biennial elections

for the new board. The results will be posted on the AMC

website and will be printed in the next issue of the Trumpet.

We are looking forward to our annual Philoptochos year- end

dinner scheduled for June 15th at 7:30pm at H on the Harbor

in Port Washington. Thank you to Chris Ioannou who is spear-

heading this event. On that evening we will be saying good-

bye and thank you to our retiring board and will be introducing

the newly elected board. We extend an invitation to all ladies

in our community to join us at this wonderful year-end event.

For reservations please contact Chris Ioannou at 516-944-3505.

All Philoptochos obligations, both locally and nationally, have

been met. We also made a generous contribution towards the

reconstruction of St. Nicholas Church at the World Trade Center.

We continue to make hospital and nursing home visits as well

as visits to those who are homebound. If you know of someone

who our Philoptochos could visit, please contact Dory Karahalis

at 516-944-5460 or Eleni Raptis at 516-775-4238.

The last meeting of the year will be held on Monday, June 1st, 2015. We look forward to seeing you at the first meeting of the new year which is scheduled for Monday, September 8th. Although we will soon be embarking on our summer break, our work will continue throughout July and August.

Have a Great Summer!

“Each day comes bearing its own gifts. Untie the ribbons!” -Ruth Ann Schabacker

In the blink of an eye, another successful school year, 2014-2015, has come to an end. Our Kindergarteners who tiptoed into their classrooms in September are now happily skipping in with new friends, singing songs and attempting to read and write. Our 7th graders, prepare to graduate, having gained the skills needed to read, write and communicate in the Greek language.

The School Board congratulates the 7th graders for a job well done and wishes them all the best on their upcoming Gradua-tion! You have made us, your families and the AMC community very proud! The Board also wishes the best of luck to our most senior students who will soon be taking the Regents exam. You have been well prepared and have worked hard. We are cer-tain that you will be very successful!

Looking back, the school year was adorned with many experi-ences, including class projects such as the construction of mini Trojan Horses, the preparation of Lenten food, building family trees, doing research on Greek migration to the United States, and of course our annual OXI Day, Christmas Pageant, Greek Independence Day Assembly and Parade.

The end of the year was made even more special as our stu-dents were given the opportunity and the honor to participate in the Consecration of our Church. Our students were truly the angels of the Archangel Michael Church. During Vespers they held candles while Bishop Andonios, followed by all the priests in attendance, brought forward the relics of St. Panteleimon, St. Kyrikos and St. Barbara. On the morning of the Consecra-tion the students greeted Archbishop Demetrios, some wear-ing school uniforms and others in traditional “stoles”. Many of our students wearing their Altar Boy and Choir robes also participated by serving throughout the Consecration, as they had on the Saturday of Lazarus. They also witnessed Father Dennis receiving the rank of Protopresbyter of the Ecumenical Patriarchate. Congratulations Fr. Dennis!! Axios!

The aforementioned experiences brought our community to-gether and lifted our spirit of Hellenic pride and love of Greek letters and Greek Orthodoxy in young and old alike. For that, we are most thankful to Fr. Dennis, Fr. Nikolas, Mrs. Capous and Mrs. Spyridakis our principals, the teachers, parents, PTA and our students. It is when we all work together harmoniously that The Archangel Michael Greek Language Institute thrives!

Kindly take note of the following:

• Registration is ongoing for the 2015-16 school year. Please contact Mrs. Mariann Matarangas, [email protected] or Mrs. Demetra Tsismenakis, [email protected] . A $75 late registration fee applies after June 4th.

To all our amazing students, congratulations και σ’ανοτερα!Have a great summer!

The PTA Board congratulates the Class of 2015, as they gradu-

ate from the AMC Greek Language Institute. We recognize and

commend Deme Apostolou, Vasili Apostolou, Angeline Chantly,

Michael Colombos, Liana Drenis, Ellen Efkarpidis, Anastasia

Fournaris, Erika Kitsanas, Andrea-Niki Maropakis, Sofia Matos,

Demetra Neocleous, Thanasi Pappas, Penelope Pavlounis,

Peter Petrakis, Mary Tsahas and Despina Tsiamtsouris.

It has been a momentous year for the graduates, and I would like to reflect on some of the moments that will forever remain as fond memories for them...

• The graduates were represented at the Greek Indepen-dence Day Parade this year, as two of our 7th grade stu-dents proudly carried the Greek and American flags for our School. All of the students who marched proudly with our School were acknowledged and rewarded by the PTA.

• This was the year of our Church’s consecration, and we were blessed to have been graced by the presence of His Eminence, Archbishop Demetrios. Our graduates were asked to represent the Greek School children by respect-fully greeting His Eminence with kind words and an offer-ing of beautiful spring flowers. His Eminence graciously received the children’s greetings with a display of love. This was truly a once in a lifetime experience.

AMCares

Our community is launching AMCares, an organization dedicated to mobilizing our youth to give their time and efforts to raise money and supplies for children and families in need around the world.

AMCares’ first event was a Car Wash scheduled for the end of May at The Archangel Michael Church. While participants waited for

their cars to be cleaned, they visited the AMC Café, featuring sou-vlakia on a stick, hot and iced coffee, frappe and Greek pastries. All of the proceeds from the event will be given to The Interna-

tional Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) and the Heart Doctors, both of which serve individuals and communities in need.

In the next issue, look for photos from this wonderful fundraiser!

• The graduates were also very fortunate to have been guid-

ed through the prosphoro making process by our beloved

Presbytera Paula. The PTA provided the supplies, and the

children (and parents too) had so much fun! Thank you,

Presbytera, for teaching us not only how to make pros-

phoro, but the significant meaning behind it also.

• As a special treat, the PTA traditionally provides the 7th

graders with a “Graduates Night Out”. This year, the grad-

uates chose to celebrate at Bounce. This dynamic group

bounced the night away, having a great time, enjoying

each other’s company! Clearly, the friendships that have

been forged during the past 8 years at Greek School were

apparent that night.

Graduation will take place on Friday, June 5th, at 5pm in the

AMC Gymnasium. At this time, we will also recognize the mov-

ing up of grades 3-6, as they celebrate the graduates through

beautiful Greek dance and songs. Grades K-2 will celebrate

their moving up on Tuesday, June 2nd, in the Fellowship Hall

during Greek School hours. Thursday, June 4th, is the last day

of classes! The PTA will treat everyone to an ice cream cel-

ebration with our favorite Mr. Yianni.

It has been my pleasure to have served you as PTA president

for the past two years. It was an experience that brought me

closer to many of you in the community, and gave me true

pleasure working alongside a wonderful group of people who

helped work toward positive outcomes for our children. As my

term is now over, it’s time for a changing of the guard, so to

speak. Four seats are open on the PTA board. Two co-presi-

dents and two co-secretaries would be ideal. Don’t let a title

fool you, as everyone works together as a team! It’s a great

opportunity for you and your children, as it makes the children

very proud to see their parents involved. Thanks to those who

have served with me over the past two years: parents, class

moms, and especially my board members Penny Stefanakis, So-

fia Caldwell, Roni Lagamjis, Antonia Bizekis and Patty Tsahas!

For further guidance on how to get involved, please contact

me at [email protected], or directly at

[email protected].

Wishing you a blessed summer with your families!

On Sunday, March 22nd, students from our Sunday School classes participated in the annual Junior Division of the Direct Archdiocese District St. John Chrysostom Oratorical Festival. The students thoroughly researched their topics, making ref-erence in their presentations to appropriate passages in the Bible, and included personal experiences as well. Parishio-ners who were present that day were very impressed with the quality of the orations and offered their congratulations to all the participants. The committee of judges, who had no easy task, announced the results on the following day.

1st Place - Peter Dres 2nd Place - Marika Reynolds

3rd Place - Christopher Gerazounis

Peter and Marika went on to represent Archangel Michael Church at the Long Island Division level, hosted by Kimisis Tis Theotokou in Island Park on April18th. Marika was awarded first place and then went on to the District Level competition which took place on May 2nd at Holy Trinity Church in New Rochelle. On May 3rd, Fr. Dennis announced to the congre-gation that Marika was again awarded first place and will now move on to participate in the national level finals sched-uled for June 5th-7th in Passadena, CA. Congratulations, Και Σ’Ανοτερα!

This year we were excited to implement a new program for our Sunday School children. Our music program began for the younger grades and the children enjoyed singing and learning new hymns and songs. We look forward to continuing and ex-panding this program next year.

An integral part of this year’s Sunday School program was the continuation of Fr. Dennis’ and Fr. Nikolas’ inspirational teaching ministry; immediately after Holy Communion, rotat-ing groups of students gathered in the chapel to learn about the Sacraments of the Orthodox Church. Altar Boys and Youth Choir members met their classes in the chapel on their sched-uled days. It was very enlightening and such a great learning experience for our children and their teachers. We hope to continue this wonderful program next year.

The Sunday School Program will complete the year with our

Moving Up Day on June 7th. We would like to thank our teach-

ers for their devotion and our parents for making this year a

success. This year we had over 300 children enrolled in our

Sunday School program, and next year we hope to welcome

more. We wish everyone a wonderful summer and look for-

ward to seeing you in September! Καλο Καλοκαιρι!

The Consecration of Archangel Michael Church was absolute-ly Glorious! The melodious voices of the our adult and youth choirs, along with many talented choir members from other churches in the Archdiocesan District joined together for a most memorable weekend. Commemorating our transforma-tion to a hallowed and sacred home was truly inspirational for all those who witnessed it.

You have made the earthly beauty of the holy taber-nacle of Your glory to be like the majesty of the firma-ment on high, O Lord. Make it strong forever and ever and accept our supplications that we unceasingly bring to You there, at the intercession of the Theotokos. For

You are the Life and Resurrection of all.

(Apolytikion for Consecration Mode 4)

Both of this year’s high school graduates have been devoted to our church youth choir for the past ten years! At the re-cent 15th Anniversary of His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, which was celebrated at The Cathedral in Manhattan, Renee Lascarides passionately played a beautiful Byzantine hymn on her flute. At the Heretismi service on the fourth Friday of Lent, Alexa Vasilakos magnificently chanted the Aspile. We are sin-cerely grateful for their dedicated service and wish them the very best of luck as they pursue their college careers. Mega Congratulations to RENEE LASCARIDES & ALEXA VASILAKOS!

Everyone is cordially invited to come and share a delightful time at the 2015 Musicale to be held at 2PM on Sunday, June 14th at the Rimsky Theatre, Landmark on Main Street in Port Washington.

Best Wishes for a summer filled with Music!

The Archangel Michael choir and community is proud of our organist Christina Lipinski on having written, then presenting and successfully defending her dissertation, in April. On May 7, 2015 Christina was awarded a Doctorate degree in School Psychology from Saint John’s University. Congratulations Dr. Lipinski! We wish you success in your career and all of God’s Blessings!

It is with great pride and happiness that we announce the ac-complishments of our young athletes at the JOY Basketball championship games. Not only was our community the only one this year to have three teams playing in the finals (to put this in perspective, there were a total of four finals games and our community played in three of those)--we also won two of the games. Congratulations to the second place Girls 2 (ages 9-10) Team coached by Michael Bapis and assisted by Demetra Tsismenakis and John Petras and to the champion Girls 3 (ages 11-12) Maroon Team coached by George Themelis and assisted by John Petras and Theo Tsiamtsiouris and to the champion Boys 2 (ages 9-10) Maroon Team coached by John Tsiforas and assisted by Kirk Lazaridis. We are very proud of you!

After celebrating Vespers, His Eminence, Archbishop Demetri-os, presented the trophies at the JOY Basketball League Trophy Dinner on Saturday, May 2, at St. Demetrios Church, in Astoria.

And while winning is great, the manner in which our teams did so gives us many additional reasons to be proud of our teams: our coaches and our players who conducted themselves in a way that exhibits the AMC values and sportsmanship, and represents our AMC community well: hard work, great sports-manship and the utmost respect toward the opposing teams, referees and the League.

We look forward to the Basketball Camp that will be held the last two weeks of August, and again in the fall, when our “quest” to defend our titles and attain new ones, will begin anew! Check the website for registration information. Have a wonderful summer!

Once again, GOYA’s calendar was filled with events that gave the group the opportunity to get together with their friends. On March 8th, St. Paul’s hosted the annual Cathedral Cup. Two teams participated, boys and girls, and they all had a great time!

On March 14th, GOYAns from Long Island, Westchester and Con-necticut participated in the Annual InterGOYA Scavenger Hunt. The GOYAns along with chaperones were broken up into teams and ventured through the Museum of Natural History looking for answers to questions. Archangel Michael GOYA, divided up into two teams and came in 1st and 3rd place. SO EXCITING! The day finished with a Lenten lunch at the beautiful Central Park Boathouse. On March 29th, we all marched together in unity at the Greek Independence Day Parade.

In conjunction with our journey through Great Lent, the ser-vices of Holy Week and ultimately our celebration of Pascha, GOYA sold Luminary bags and candles in memory of loved ones, family and/or friends. These bags displayed the name of the person to be commemorated and were lined up for the proces-sion of Holy Friday. Thanks to all for your generous donations and making it such a success.

On April 3rd, together with AMC Fellowship Night, Archangel Mi-

chael GOYA families contributed food to the Lenten Potluck Din-

ner. What a great spread and wonderful evening of fellowship

combined with Palm Making. The GOYAns also participated in a

Lenten Retreat where they learned about the journey of Holy

Week, assembled emergency, health and school kits, donated

to the International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) and as-

sembled food collected for the food pantry in Port Washington.

During the month of May the GOYAns honored mothers on Mother’s Day and participated in the Greek Orthodox District Olympics as well as the Pins for Pauley fundraiser.

As the school year approaches an end, the GOYAns are look-ing forward to a Year End Trip. We are also planning ahead by holding a “Meet and Greet” to welcome approximately 40 “graduating” JOY members to GOYA, and introducing our new-ly elected 2015- 2016 GOYA Board. Please check the Evites and your emails for dates and details of these events.

GOYA would like to congratulate all graduating seniors and wish them the best of luck in their future! Have a wonderful and safe summer.

Looking forward to seeing you in September!

The Archangel Michael Greek Dance Troupe participated in and performed at the Ronald McDonald House Greek Division Walk-athon on May 16th. We look forward to completing the year with our dance recital performance at the End - of -Year BBQ on June 7th.

The Greek Dance Troupe was established in 1999 under the direction of Roula Zogopoulos. Our Troupe’s goal is to offer children an opportunity to come together and continue our Hellenic dance traditions. Mrs. Zogopoulos creates a safe atmosphere in which our young people are inspired to learn about their Hellenic heritage through our rich dancing and mu-sical traditions.

The Greek Dance Troupe of the Archangel Michael Church is looking forward to another great year in 2015-16. The Troupe invites the youth in our community to join us! We meet on Sat-urdays throughout the school year according to the schedule below:

News & Events

During Holy Week, over 30 children from our HOPE/JOY group volunteered their time at a soup kitchen in Hempstead, NY. A firsthand account from some of the participants follows:

An Afternoon at the Mary Brennan Inn

written by Irene Tsahas, Mary Tsahas, and Maria Doulis

On Holy Monday, we spent an afternoon at the Mary Brennan

INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) with Fr. Nikolas and three

other families from the Archangel Michael Church. During our

visit, we learned that the Mary Brennan INN is the largest soup

kitchen located on Long Island. On a daily basis they serve

lunch weekdays from 11:30-1:30 for approximately 200 to 600

guests. They provide for families in need with many things

such as donated books, clothes, toiletries and groceries to

take home. The guests wait on a long line to take a 12-minute

hot shower. This great organization provides for many in need

across Nassau County.

We were given tasks such as stocking up the pantry, organizing

the library and the boutique full of donated clothes, straight-

ening out the perishable goods, making care packages, and

cleaning the dining area. Our job was to straighten out the

perishable goods. We packaged loaves of bread and bagels,

disposed of the expired goods, and reorganized the fridge. We

never realized how much work it took to keep the soup kitchen

operating to its full potential.

In addition, this experience has made us feel fortunate and

thankful for all we have. These guests are dependent on all

their necessities from the soup kitchen. They gather their food

for the night from the pantry and sometimes the only meal

they may have is lunch from the soup kitchen. For example,

the guests choose their wardrobe from a boutique filled with

donated clothes. When we think of a boutique, it’s new high-

end clothes. These guests are grateful for the clothes that are

donated. This new experience has really changed our perspec-

tive on the way we view our privileged life. The smallest thing

like shopping at the grocery store or buying new clothes is a

big deal in someone else’s life. Every little thing can make a

difference and help us to better understand the challenges

others face if we take a walk in someone else’s shoes, even for

just one afternoon.

The second Peter Christofer Memorial “Hoop It Up” 3 on 3 Bas-

ketball Tournament was held on May 9th, 2015 in our gymna-

sium. Six teams competed in a double elimination format. The

teams consisted of players of various ages. Over one thousand

dollars was raised to dedicate an awards showcase in Peter’s

memory.

Below are the First and Second place Teams along with Peter Christofer’s sons.

2015 Greek Festival on the HarborOur first FOUR Greek Festivals on the Harbor were great successes and we need your help to continue that achievement and elevate our 5th Festival to reach new heights.

In 2014, a team of 440 volunteers (including 40+ children) worked tirelessly to achieve the “impossible”, to make our Festival bigger and better than ever before—and we accomplished that Goal. To date, the AMC Festivals have raised an astounding ~$880,000 for the Parish. These monies supplemented our Capital Campaign to complete the Archangel Michael Sanctuary, the Chapel, the Bell Tower, the iconography and other improvements to our facilities, plus pay down debt—all satisfying important goals for our Parish.

However, something more and very special also occurred. Parishioners—young and old—made new friendships and built relationships by working together in fellowship as volunteers, creating a special camaraderie that will endure long into the future.

Despite the financial success, our expenses have grown materially over the past 4 years—from $152,000 in 2011, to more than $310,000 in 2014, and once again we expect our costs and expenses to increase in 2015. Due to the size of the event, food and beverage costs, supplies costs, tent and cooking equipment rental costs, and security & cleaning service costs will likely all go up. In addition, in the coming months we will once again make investments in additional equipment for the Festival—for example, last year we purchased cooking equipment, 2 way radios, cash registers, construction materials, lighting fixtures, etc.

Given the growing costs each year it becomes more important to offset them with Sponsorships and Donations. Please help by donating what you can—from a $10 donation to a major sponsorship, it all helps, and is GREATLY appreciated.

Also noteworthy, a large amount of our goods and services are donated. For example, the trucks we used for refrigeration and storing supplies and the moving company who moved our Fabulous Finds from the Church to the site were all donated. Some of the generators we used for electricity were also donated and the same for much of our food and beverage items. These are expensive items and if we had to pay for them our net proceeds would have been considerably less.

Sponsors will benefit from great exposure in the community (that is with our Parishioners and the broader Port Washington area). Sponsors are recognized on signage throughout the festival site. In 2014, the PW Police estimated that we had more than 40,000 people attend the festival on Saturday alone—the evening of our Fireworks. We offer many sponsorship options to fit a variety of budgets. Please take the time to look at the next two pages and consider becoming either a sponsor of the festival or a donor. Any and all donations will help defray expenses.

Also, very soon, you will receive a mailing dedicated to the Festival. It will include information on who to contact to volunteer your time. It will also include a flyer from the “Fabulous Finds” committee letting you know when you can start dropping off your treasures (the Fab Finds Team raised over $110,000 over the past 4 years, with little overhead). It will also include a flyer from the Bakery Committee—thanks to your donations of home made cookies last year, we sold over 10,000 cookies.

So let’s get ready once again and set out to achieve new heights and if possible have even more fundoing it.

Looking forward to working with all of you again, The Festival Chairs (Michael, Peter, Chris, John, Oscar & Michael)
