Performance Suggestions

These parts are designed to work with one, two or three trumpets. You may want to use 1st and 2nd parts for the first verse, solo or unison melody on various middle verses, and then parts with descant on the final verse. It’s your choice depending on your needs and the abilities of your musicians. Piano parts are included to eliminate contradictions in harmonizations, but you should find that most of these public domain hymn tunes use pretty standard formats.

If you need parts for more instruments or hymns not included in the Trumpet Descants Collection, please visit www.cuthbertpraise.com for a complete list of Hymn arrangements for brass, guitar and a variety of other instruments. The brass arrangements work as a trio, quartet, quintet, large brass choir or even a band of mixed brass, wind and string instruments. All the parts are marked with doublings and substitutions, and performance suggestions are listed on the bottom of the page. You may want to begin the hymn with a brass introduction – either the entire verse, or a portion of it – then have them play with the congregation for the 1st verse; the second verse can be accompanied by piano/organ alone (and guitars if you have them); for the third verse you may want to feature a solo instrument with piano/organ, and then bring in the entire ensemble along with descant for the final verse. Again, it’s your choice. Experiment with different colors and combinations.

Along with duet, band and orchestra parts you will also find a guitar and voice lead sheet in the hymn editions. The guitar chords will work with the piano and instrumental parts, or you may use the guitar by itself – perfect for small gatherings, retreats or services where no piano is available.

Randy Adams is Professor of Trumpet at Sam Houston State University where he has taught since 1993. He served as Houston Symphony Orchestra Interim Trumpet for the 2001-2002 season and has been a member of the Houston Grand Opera Orchestra since 1984. Randy also performs with the Houston Ballet Orchestra and he performed Broadway musicals for 12 years with Houston’s Theatre Under the Stars. Randy toured Europe during the summer months for 20 years with Alpenfest singing, yodeling and performing cornet solos, alpenhorn, guitar, musical handsaw, European folk music, and a variety of other musical styles, and he is now performing in Texas and surrounding states with his own band Auf Geht’s Musik. Randy plays guitar and bass (and even trumpet when they let him!) at St. Cuthbert Episcopal Church in Houston, and he has recorded two solo guitar CD's for the church. He has also written more than 140 hymn arrangements and descants for brass and winds along with guitar chords and composed sacred choral anthems for CuthbertPraise, and he has written extensively for the SHSU trumpet ensembles.
