Check engine oil level and water level in radiator daily orweekly. depending on operating conditions.Drain and refill engine sump every 10.000 km (6,000miles) or every six months, whichever comes first.Under severe conditions of mud or dust, the first and~ubsequent engine oil changes must be more frequent, fven to the extent of a daily change. Under deep wadingconditions through water carrying mud and grit a dailyoil change is essential.Every month and every maintenance inspection checktyre pressures and inspect tyre treads; under arduouscross-country conditions the tyre pressures should bechecked much more frequently, even to the extent of adaily check. If front wheel tread wear is uneven, checkwheel alignment.Every month and every maintenance inspection checkfluid level in brake fluid reservoir and battery acid level.Brakes.! Change brake fluid every 20.000 km (12,000miles) or twelve months. When the vehicle is used for dusty road or field work, attention to the air cleaner must be more frequent andmay involve a daily oil change; under extremely badconditio~s, cleaning twice daily may be called for.It is essential to change oil in gearbox, transfer box, differentials and s\vivel pin housings much morefrequently than indicated if the vehicle is operated underbad conditions, especially if deep wading is carried out.It is r~ommended that only skilled and experiencedpersonriel attend to items relating to the engine tune orthe emission and evaporative loss control systems. Whenthese items have received attention the exhaust emissionlevel should be checked using proper equipment toensure that it conforms to the standards laid down forthis model.Refer to VEH G 309 for correct lubricants.

Check operation of all lights and instruments. After test checkfor oil, fuel and fluid leaks at all plugs, flanges, joints and unions.

Preventive Maintenance

Bleeding the brake system. When the fluid in the hydraulic system has been changed or

any components replaced it will be necessary to remove the airby bleeding the hydraulic system at each wheel cylinder.Bleeding must always be carried out at all wheels.

Proceed as follows:1. Slacken the adjusters offon all brake shoes.2. Attach a length of rubber tubing to the bleed screw on

the wheel cylinder furthest from the brake pedal andplace the lower end of the tube in a glass jar containing

" brake fluid.

NOTf: On dual braking systems only, do not use full pedaltravel as this may decentralise the shuttle valve plungerin the bra,ke failure switch. Operate the pedal slowly. Ifduring the bleeding procedure the plunger operates theswitch and warning light is on, the bleedscrew must beclosed and the bleedscrew at the other end of the vehicleopened (if bleeding the front brakes, open a bleedscrewon a real' brake and vice versa).A steadly pressure must then be applied to the pedaluntil the light goes out, then the pressure must bereleased immediately and the bleedscrew closed.Otherwise the piston will move too far in the oppositedirection and require resetting again.

3. Slacken the bleed screw and depress the brake pedal andrelease slowly. Pause at each end of the return stroke. toallow the master cylinder to recuperate. Continuepumping in this manner until the fluid issuing from thetube shows no signs of air bubbles when the tube is heldbelow the surface of the fluid in the jar.

4. Hold the tube under the fluid surface and, with the footbrake fully depressed, tighten the bleed screw. Do notovertighten.

5. Repeat for the other three wheels in turn, finishing at theone nearest the brake pedal.

6. Pump brake pedal until rear shoes are in firm contactwith the brake drums.

7. While holding pedal depressed, adjust rear adjusters upto the shoes, 70.25.03.

8. Release pedal and slacken rear adjusters until shoes arejust clear of the drums,

9. Adjust front shoes in the normal manner, 70.25.03.

EMISSION AND EVAPORATION CONTROL SYSTEM

Introduction 17.00.00

Land Rover models are equipped with emission controlfeatures designed to comply with all current regulations for theparticular sales market; however, due to varying regulationsbetween different countries all of the features described may notbe applicable to or incorporated on a particular model.

Three independent and separate systems are employed foremission control, namely crankcase emission control, evaporative loss control and exhaust emission control.

This {ehicle being fitted with crankcase emission, evaporativeloss control system (all models) and late models are also fittedwith Ilir injection (exhaust emission) to meet Australian designrules covering vehicle emissions.

EVAPORATIVE LOSS CONTROL

- DeSiCrlption (All models)

RESTRICTED

17.15.00

Fuel tank evaporative emISSIOns are vented to an activatedcharcoal filled container where they are adsorbed, then ventedthrough a flame trap to the combustion air intake system duringengine running as follows:

1.

2.

3.4.

5.

6.

7.

9.

10.

A charcoal-filled adsorption container is situated in theengine compartment, to deal with evaporative emissionsfrom the fuel tank.

t.rom the main fuel tank there is a main tank breatherIpe. .his is fed into a separate expansion tank.

From the expansion tank a further breather pipe leads tothe charcoal container. At the side of the container, an air inlet pipe is open toatmosphere. From the top, a pipe leads to the carburettor air cleanerelbow.Normal fuel tank breathing is through the air inlet pipeon the charcoal container and then through the twobreather pipes via the expansion tank.Any vapours from the fuel in the main or expansiontanks are fed via the main breather and expansion tankbreather pipes into the charcoal container, where theyare adsorbed on the charcoal and do not escape toatmosphyre.During engine accelerating conditions air is drawn inthrough the air inlet pipe at the side of the container, purging the trapped emissions into the engine throughthe carburettor air cleaner elbow. The fut;tction of the expansion tank is to provide anoverfloW reservoir for the main tank, as it is possiblewhen the main tank is completely filled in high ambienttemperature conditions for the fuel to expand and force alarge quantity along the breather pipe. The size of theexpansion tank allows for maximum fuel expansion;under such conditions evaporative emissions are stillcontrolled by the charcoal and, due to the location of thebreather pipe at the boltom of the expansion tank, theoverflow fuel will eventually be drawn back into themain tank as fuel is used.

(a) ~nsure vacuum is available at the switch bychecking the hose connections for soundness, thenrunning the engine for a short period during whichengine overrun conditions are obtained, that is,throttle opened then allowed to quickly close.

(b) With vacuum available, if the brake warning lightremains 'ON', disconnect the electrical leads at thevacuum switch and connect together the leads, using a slave Lucar male connector blade.

(c) If the light is extinguished, the vacuum switch isfaulty and must be replaced. If the warning lightremains 'ON', leave the leads connected togetherand proceed to the next switch in the circuit.

7. Brake pressure differential switch(a) Disconnect the switch leads and interconnect them

to remake the circuit.(b) Ifthe warning light remains 'ON', proceed to check

the next switch in the circuit; if the light isextinguished, check for hydraulic system leakagewhich would cause the differential switch plungerto displace to one end.

NOTE: On dual braking systems, the hydraulic fluid reservoir isdivided into two compartments, The front compartment supplies the front brakes, the rear compartmentsupplies the rear brakes. A difference in fluid levels may

II indicate which system is leaking.(c) To centralise the differential switch plunger, bleed

brake line in the pressurised system (front or rear asapplicable) using very slow pedal travel andobserving the brake warning light. Immediately thewarning light is extinguished, keep a light pressureonly on the pedal and close off the bleed nipple.

GENERATOR 28 VOLT (FFR)

EMEI VEHICLE G 326

ELECfRICAL EQUIPMENT - 86

- Technical Description A86.11.01

Inductor type alternators have the following features which canbe exploited where reliable Power Conversion is required.

1. No sliding electrical contacts.2. No rotating windings.3. The output current is inherently limited to a well defined

value.

If these features are combined with generous bearings, a longservice I life with minimum maintenance can be realised.Semi-c9nductors ensure efficient conversion and control of thealternators' currents and voltages.

These factors underlie the design philosophy of the generator asfitted to this vehicle.

1. An inductor type Alternator with cooling fan.2. Two three phase, full wave Rectifier Units.3. A solid state, Voltage Regulator Unit.4. A Radio Interference Suppression Unit.

Electrical cOrlnections between sub-assemblies have beenminimised, and can be made or broken quickly. All componentshavt been treated to withstand military environmental tests.
